Christmas is coming! I never used too.. (My Life Around It)

When I was a teenager, the wife of one of my dads friends who is a jehovas witness was very keen on me joining her.
I was late teens so I thought I could make up my own mind alright, but it's so bizarre how I got almost brainwashed by her leaflets and readings from the Bible. It's probably a good thing I got past it, I always remember one of the things she said was that God doesn't approve of us injesting other people's blood...well, since then I've acquired an immune condition that has meant I needed multiple daily transfusions to keep me alive during relapses, that is the only treatment for my condition. I was only 23 when I first became unwell and I will always wonder what she would have said about it...or how she would have justified her opinions when without transfusions I would die.
Not sure if that's a common teaching but it was certainly important to her and the other jehovas witnesses I knew at the time

Anyway, will be having a quiet Christmas this year. Will be doing something a bit different for dinner though...pork instead of turkey?
Will see how that goes down ;) I hate turkey.

Oh my goodness, I sincerely hope you are alright. I'm sorry you have to deal with that, I can't even begin to imagine what it's like. I hope your family and friends give you the support you need regardless of religion, please stay well. <3

Christmas has always been an important time for my family. None of us are religious, but what it means is to have everyone home for once during the year, and just enjoy each other's company. We've never really bought into the commercial side of Christmas too much, and now that I'm older I'm glad. It's made the holiday less about expensive gifts and more about family time.

Glad to hear you're enjoying Christmas a lot more now OP. <3 It's a special time of year I think, and even if you don't really celebrate it, I feel like it should still be used as an excuse for people to get together with people they love and just spend time with them.

I think Christmas for me this year will be really nice, getting to spend time with my family who I've not seen in months now, and spending time with friends who I've not seen in like 3/4 months. I'm gonna miss my university friends though so much considering we'll be like on opposite ends of the country to each other. :')

It is... It really is a true teaching.. My mom had a "No Blood" CARD in her wallet in case she was in a accident the doctor would know not to give her blood.. If you need it the elders suggest Beetroot and heavy iron injections..

I truly hope you get better <3 And I'm glad you didn't get lost in that world.. Happy Holidays! :3

JW's sound a bit wacko! I'm just gonna be celebrating it like I always do, w/ my family and yeah...nothing special!

I love it. I'm spending it with family.

I appreciate the roots of the holiday. I'm a pagan, so while I don't really partake in the whole...organized religious thing, I have personal celebrations for the winter solstice and appreciate the beauty of other people's religions. The love. The hot cups of cocoa. And I love getting people gifts.

Oh wow! I'm so sorry for your troubles, but I'm so glad you can find joy and happiness in this holiday! I'm agnostic with mixed religion in my immediate family, but huge chunks of my distant family are christian. We celebrate Christmas more as just a family appreciation holiday-- My mom celebrates winter Solstice and things that are closely related to Christmas, so we just sort of lump everything together for celebration. I really love what my family does for Christmas, we don't take it very seriously and we still make other plans if we want to, but the morning together is a lot of fun, and we always show appreciation for each other in our household. For me, Christmas is just a fun tradition, and my family is what makes like special (well, parts of it...) along with my lovely fiance' and our wonderful friends-- my "made-family".

It's great that your able to enjoy the holidays, and I hope that all the wonderful people in your life help you move through the bad times and have a much happier future! Good luck! Merry Christmas to you and those who celebrate, and Happy Holidays to anyone reading this that celebrates something else this holiday season! <3

Thank you so much for your lovely words, I really appreciate it :) I've been lucky up until now (if you can call it that), my relapses have fallen during the summer right after my birthday and I'm usually back home before my sisters birthday the beginning of October.
I'm okay right now and looking forward to a Christmas where I'll be cooking something I actually like for dinner ;)

I see, I wasn't sure if it was just her interpretation, she was very strict about her religion. I took advanced Religious education as a subject at school and Jehovas Witnesses wasn't something that was ever spoken about. The blood transfusion thing never came up either, is it just a Jehovas witness thing?

Beetroot and iron injections huh...I'll mention it to my consultant tomorrow ;)
Thank you for your kindness <3

that's such an awful story, i'm so sorry you had to go through all of that. i can't even imagine what it must've been like. i'm really glad you got help & that you have your boyfriend & his family to spend christmas with! i hope you have a really good one. ♡

as for me, i absolutely love christmas. i'm not religious (not against it at all, i just don't ""identify"" with any religion atm) but it's never really been about religion for me, more just about spending time with those you love, giving gifts, etc. my grandparents have come over in the morning every year since i was little, but they both passed away in the last three months -- plus my boyfriend is a marine and won't be home until february. so at this point i'm just trying to keep my head up and drown myself in lights + christmas music + happy things, lol.

I'm so sorry to hear that.:(
Ever since my grandpa passed away in 2014, Christmas hasn't been as exciting for me, but I'm still looking forward to it.:)

I'm sorry you had such a negative experience with religion Sammy420. I am an atheist myself and have found that no religions click or make sense for me. I hope you are doing better now.

Even though I have never been a Christian I still enjoy Christmas. I like the family gatherings, decorations, food, music, and giving gifts to others. Christmas also brings up a lot of bad memories for me though, so I both love and dislike it. Honestly it depends on the day, but in general I enjoy it.
