for me, convenience comes first. i purposefully have nooks cranny, the museum, and my house as close to resident services and the airport as possible. the rest of the layout is based on aesthetic, but i designed based on what would make life easiest first.
There were some times in the past where I was guilty of doing things just for convenience...but I've stopped doing most of it. Whether it was planting a ton of fruit trees in one spot (which I ended up hating the look of)...or planting a ton of flowers for no real reason other than breeding (which I hated the look of)...or building land bridges with the construction tool to make moving around easier without paying for new bridges (which, again...I hated the look of).
Yeah...I mostly don't do anything in my game now that isn't both functional and aesthetically pleasing to me. I'm past the point of doing things just "to get ahead"...and mainly need my island to make me happy when I run around (which I feel is the whole point...lol).
Right now I have everything packed around Resident Services for convenience while I leave the rest of my island open for fruit orchards and hybrid breeding. Once I have enough bells, items, and hybrids to decorate my island the way I want, I'll move into "Phase 2" and terraform and move things into locations that are less practical but more aesthetically pleasing.
The overall layout was based on aesthetic but things within the layout were grouped for convenience! For instance I don’t have any fruit trees in places where it might be annoying or difficult to reach them, shops are close together and close to the airport, etc. I prioritize aesthetic slightly over convenience.
Both, but convenience weighs higher than aesthetic. That's why I have my dumb "Home Depot" area with pre-built extra tools. I don't like how it looks (maybe I can find a way to make it look nicer, haven't tried yet) but having tools, a DIY bench, and spare materials available is just so helpful.
mostly convenience. i'll have a max of 1-2 areas that are slightly inconvenient for aesthetic purposes, but i would not have any area that was completely unusable for the sake of aesthetics.
Both... Initially though I drew my map on happy Island Designer so I guess I was more looking at the layout? But now for example I organized the commercial area to be close to the airport that way when people visit they can check out the stores without getting too lost.
I'd say aesthetic first, but I do consider some practical aspects. And I try to have somewhat broad paths as much as I can so villagers go everywhere
I've been trying to do both. I have a rule that I'm not allowed to terraform too much away from the original, natural look of my island. I try to build a convenient town around the natural landscape and I'm having a lot of fun adapting to the surroundings. It might not be perfect, it might not be symmetrical in certain places but it's starting to look like a town that was built on the island, not forced onto it.
i try to do both ;w; i made nooks and ables close to each other but went out of my way to make it look nice lmao. i have nooks on the ground, and built an entire cliff so that i could put able's a little bit behind but above nooks. :~)
Aesthetics, PFFTT. I have fences, water, and cliffs put around different areas of my town so that they're blocked off and my town has sections. I find it fun when there's places to explore and you can't just run from the bottom of the map to the top of the map in a straight line. When I have to do something like a treasure hunt for a villager though, it's really awful to navigate LMFAO.
I do have my house fairly close to the shops though, and while it is convenient that wasn't my first priority when I placed the shops, I wanted them to look cool |D
I try for both, although I usually lean on the side of convenience. I don't have a nice entrance to my island because I put Nook's Cranny and the Able Sisters right in front of the airport. Recently, I've been trying to spice up my island a bit and add more aesthetically pleasing areas, but even then I always make sure that the furniture I put there is spaced out enough for me to run through it easily. I don't like having things blocked off if any way, even if it looks really cool.
Mine is both. Although maybe aesthetics comes first because I find most people think my Nooks and Able's to be a little out of the way but it's mostly because I wanted them in a certain area?
Lately I've started to make my island less convenient though by blocking rivers with fences and stuff, but generally it's a pretty easy place to traverse!
A mix of both but leaning more towards convenience. I am still designing and decorating everything, but I set up everything to be in districts where stuff is grouped together based on its function. I hope once everything is decorated and finalized that it'll be a good mix of both. Some things like Nooks and Ables ended up close to the airport just because they looked good there, not for convenience.
