does asking villagers for fruit still work?

in the older games, if you sent a letter to your villagers saying “please send fruit” with your town fruit attached, eventually they would mail you some fruit back. i’ve been trying this in new horizons and so far i haven’t had any luck. does anyone know if this still works?

i’ve been sending my villagers fruit and most of the time they don’t send anything back at all

I was wondering that too. I have recently gotten all my fruit but it was a fun way to get it in previous AC.

That’s my problem so far too. The few times I did get presents back, it was furniture.
