“Assorted” Collector
Even if I only get very few bidders and low bids, an auction is still a success when someone bids for my collectibles. The market has been kind of slumped lately and there seems to be far less TBT in circulation which is why a lot of prices have dropped (just my hypothesis on the 2nd part). Due to that, auctions might not be worthwhile unless you are auctioning something everyone wants.
As for the marketplace slowing down, it's not just the low activity during the release between two Animal Crossing games. When everyone wants one collectible and nobody wants another collectible, it's not a good sign. For high-demand collectibles, those who own them refuse to sell their collectibles, no matter how much others are going to offer. Even if the buyer is willing to offer a lot. Sometimes, the owner would be willing to sell, but those who want it can't afford it at the price they're offering, while those who can afford it don't want it, either because they are saving up for another collectible, or don't want to part with their Bells. For low-demand collectibles, they aren't going to sell no matter how low the prices are. And in cases where they spent more than how much others are willing to sell, they wouldn't sell.
You don't have to share your collectibles with others. And you don't have to buy others' collectibles. The problem is that when everyone is on that boat, the marketplace won't make much progress. Even the release of ACNH didn't change much. Yeah, it did bring in a spike in activity, but trends still stayed the same.
