I love the Cranky personality, I'd say it's probably my third favorite of the personalities overall behind Snooty and Smug.
I have a bunch of Cranky villagers that I'm really fond of, so much so that I won't bother to list all of them, but I'll mention my top favorites.
- Boris: Boris is awesome in my opinion. Not only do his tusks give him a distinct design, but I have a personal reasoning why I like him which is more likely than not entirely coincidental and unintentional. In New Leaf, when he returned to the series with the Welcome Amiibo update, his house is designed as an entertainment center and features a flat screen television with a pair of accompanying speakers, a pair of theater seats, a stereos, a table with popcorn, a floor light, and has the hallway wall and lobby floor. Meanwhle, his New Horizons house is Ancient Egyptian in design. Bear with me, but all of this ties in really well with actor Boris Karloff, perhaps most well known for portraying Frankenstein's Monster in the the classic 1931 version of Frankenstein, along with Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein from Universal Studios. Boris Karloff played lots of other roles too, and among them, he also played Imhotep, the titular mummy from Universal's 1932 movie The Mummy. So, we have all those connections, but also, Boris Karloff was British and was known to drink tea during breaks while filming (there are even pictures of him doing so while in the Frankenstein makeup), and aside from all of the furniture I listed that's available in Boris' house in New Leaf, you could also acquire a Cup of Tea item from his RV. Also, this is more loose than the other stuff mentioned, but his New Horizons house features some of the Zodiac furniture set, including the Sagittarius Arrow, and Boris Karloff happened to be a Sagittarius as he was born on November 23rd.
So yeah, that's all either intentional or a wild set of coincidences, and I assume it's mostly coincidence, but I love it regardless. I also kind of like to imagine that his tusks are like vampire fangs, to tie in to another Universal Monster movie actor: Bela Lugosi, who portrayed Dracula in 1931. Just adding my own little fan logic to him.
He's been a resident of my main New Leaf town, which is a horror town, for a few years now.
- Del: I really like the robot villagers and, while Cephalobot, Ribbot, and Sprocket are more readily identifiable as such at a glance, I like to think of Del as one too since he's got that metallic sort of look to his design. His Japanese name is Yamato, so he's technically more of a reference to the Japanese World War II battleship of the same name. Nonetheless, his New Leaf house featured some of the robot furniture series and was technological in general, and his New Horizons house still has a mechanical vibe to it.
- Dobie: I love Dobie's elderly appearance. It gives him a unique look that sets him apart in a good way. He's great. I think I like Freya and Lobo more as far as Wolf villagers are concerned, but Dobie's a solid #3 and he's right there behind them.
Hopper: Penguins are my favorite animals in real life, and Hopper's unique eyebrow crest and Macaroni Penguin design are really eyecatching. I've been fond of his design since I first saw it in 2002 in the GameCube game's player guide. I had him in my very first GameCube town but I, regrettably, deleted that original town soon after making it so I could choose a different town name. I eventually reclaimed him years later in New Leaf though, so yeah.
- Knox: I'm fond of the knight aesthetic in general, so of course I have a soft spot for both Knox and his Jock Eagle counterpart Sterling.
- Lobo: I mentioned him in the Dobie section and said I like Lobo a little more than Dobie. Why? Those eyes. They're just stunning. I love the intense eyes that both Freya and Lobo have.
- Octavian: While he might not have the same air about him now that there are other Octopus villagers, back in 2002 on the GameCube, he was the only one available and my friend who got me into the game and I both thought he was really cool as a result. I actually managed to accidentally acquire him from my friend's town, much to my joy and my friend's disappointment, and he stuck around a while but unfortunately did eventually move away. I reclaimed him years later in New Leaf though, thankfully. I like that he's maintained a space theme to his house throughout the games, alongside his Star shirt, and it's fun to imagine that he's an alien octopus from another planet.
- Rasher: Those scars of his give him a cool look, and the ridiculous grin he does sometimes is great. Had him briefly in New Leaf, though I replaced him with someone else since he didn't fit the theme I was going for. Regardless, he's awesome. He's unfortunately never really had a good looking house in any of the games, as far as I'm concerned anyway, so that drags him down a bit. Maybe not so much of an issue considering the Happy Home Paradise DLC though.
- Vic: I'm generally more drawn to the unique designs when it comes to villagers, and it doesn't get much more unique than Vic and his viking design, complete with the helmet and armor. I love his design and am happy to have him as a resident on my New Horizons island.
There are a few others I could mention, particularly Camofrog and Kabuki, though I feel like this post has gone on long enough as is.
