Gen 4 definitely. I spent so many hours (300+) playing Diamond when my mom would take me to work with her over the summer. I think I got to like 412/493 caught for the Pokedex with very minimal GTS trading. The music is so nostalgic and everything was so fun, it was just the best.

If we're talking style-wise, Gen 5 was the best. The sprites were perfect (really wish we would've kept them instead of going to 3D), the changes were nice (Poke Center + Poke Mart = GOD BLESS), and the story was so deep and interesting. Truth vs ideals... is it really okay to capture and "own" Pokemon...? I just recently replayed White and it was beautiful.

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum are my most favorite games. Not only was Pearl my very first Pokemon game, but I also really loved the designs of most of the Pokemon that were introduced in that generation; especially when it comes to the legendaries and the lore behind them. The OST is my favorite of any generation as well, and I'm a sucker for mountain ranges with dense forests. Gen III and VI take second and third place respectively.

While I'm fond of Gen V and play a whole lot of Gen VI lately, I think I have to give the vote to Gen IV.

I started back during Gen I, and Crystal was my favorite Pokemon game for years. Crystal being remade was just the thing to get me back into the series after being peer-pressured out of the series when Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald came out. HGSS are very solid Pokemon games with plenty of things to do, and took what I loved about Crystal and improved it all. The only thing I was disappointed with was Kris being replaced by Lyra, though I understand why they did it.

Meanwhile, I like Platinum, but I find it runs noticeably slow. This is especially true when saving. That said, Sinnoh is solid in terms of Pokemon and enjoy the region well enough. It's not one of my favorites, but my affection for HGSS brings Platinum along for the ride by default.

If Gen VI had more substantial postgame and didn't baby the player so much, it probably would have been that. The trainer customization is a great addition and the Pokemon models look good. It's also very nice to have the improved breeding mechanics to pass down IVs these days, which makes it easier to build competitive teams and breed good shiny Pokemon. Plus, it's the first generation where I actually completed the National Pokedex and got the Shiny Charm.

If Gen VII treats the player like they're not 3 (give the Elite Four full teams, for example) and has more substance to it, then Gen IV will have some competition for my favorite generation.

Gen V for me.

I mean any Gen is great, but Gen V imo refined most of the mechanics of the games for me. They made the battles faster, leveling up to 100 less of a chore, great music, a good pokemon selection, and a postgame that has a lot to do.

The only issue for me is that the region itself is very linear compared to other regions of the Pokemon games, but other than that and a few story issues here and there. I honestly think that Gen V is unappreciated and should be played more, especially Black 2 and White 2.
