i don?t know if there?s been a thread similar to this in the past, but i?m curious: what?s your favorite Studio Ghibli film? mine is Howl?s Moving Castle! <33

Mine is Castle in the Sky but Kiki's Delivery Service was my first Ghibli movie so it has a special place in my lil heart. (,: Plus, there's so much more Kiki merch. I have a Jiji plushie.

I've only seen Ponyo I think so I guess that? I REALLY have to explore the rest of the movies!

I have to say Spirited Away, it's just.. art.

I remember watching Spirited Away during my childhood, not knowing it wasn’t for kids I don’t think. But I loved it, for some reason.

hands down spirited away, it's my favourite film of all time, it makes me feel so happy and nostalgic and warm, if i meet someone who hasn't watched it i usually quickly pressure them into watching it, it's just so good. there's just so many good studio ghibli films i'm not sure i have a second favourite, probably howl's moving castle or kiki's delivery service or ponyo

I've actually only seen Ponyo. I want to watch Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away though

Extremely hard choice. My first was Howl's Moving Castle and it was really, really good. They rest are all extremely good, but I will never be watching Grave of the Fireflies again (sorry for going there). I think I've seen all of them except for Ponyo. I think Spirited Away is my absolute favorite because it's so "weird".

i actually haven't made myself watch Grave of the Fireflies just because i've heard it's so sad. i think my second favorite, next to Howl's Moving Castle, if i had to pick, would be Princess Mononoke!

i actually haven't made myself watch Grave of the Fireflies just because i've heard it's so sad.

I was extremely depressed for a month after watching it. I have no idea why it was so much worse than any other sad movie I've seen (and I like me some sad movies), but it was. The movie is still amazing though.

Princess Mononoke for sure. That movie gets me pumped whenever I watch it, I always look forward to forgetting some of it just so I can experience it again. It's ending is just perfect in my book.

For a while though, it was Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Kiki's Delivery Service at certain points. Also Nausica? of the Valley of the Wind, if you'd like to include it.

I'd also like to mention that The Tales of Princess Kaguya and When Marnie was There are very underrated.
They just came out at a bad time.
If you haven't seen Kaguya but like Mononoke, I think you'll very much enjoy it.
As for Marnie, I found the protagonist to be the most relatable to myself in the Ghibli films.
That ending STILL gets me.

oh my god.
When Marnie was There seriously tugged at my heartstrings. i LOVED that movie! it was really an honor to watch.

then again Studio Ghibli's films are just masterpieces in themselves and i've loved every one i've seen <33

I remember watching it in Japanese and crying.
Then when it was available in English I watched it right away and was basically sobbing.

I've honestly never had a movie make me feel like that way before.
Grave of the Fireflies is sad, don't get me wrong, but Marnie is a totally different type of sad.

My List...

Let's see...

  1. Spirited Away - First one I ever saw and I love the story so much.
  2. Howl's Moving Castle (for the stunning romance)
  3. Kiki's Delivery Service (another childhood one)
  4. Grave of the Fireflies (Wow... just wow)
  5. Princess Mononoke
  6. Ponyo
  7. My Neighbor Totoro
  8. Castle in the Sky (the list sort of turns here)
  9. Nausica (put me to sleep)
  10. From up on Poppy Hill (eh)
  11. The Wind Rises (eh)
  12. Tales from Earthsea (I don't know this one was scary and kinda messed up).

I'm sure there are lots more that I haven't seen.

I LOVE Studio Ghibli! My local theatre actually showed a Ghibli movie a month all this year, so I got a nice refresher as well. Personally don't think they have a bad movie, but if I had to narrow it down to a couple:

Spirited Away: My first Ghibli film (I saw it at 4 or 5 and it blew my mind), and probably the all around tightest in my opinion. It has that same classic Ghibli creativity and imagination while keeping a gripping plot and really well developed characters. Probably also my favorite Ghibli soundtrack. Joe Hisaishi is a legend.

Grave of the Fireflies: I saw this movie for the first time a couple months back at the theatre I mentioned, and I still haven't completely shaken it off. Without spoilers, it's an amazingly powerful story, filled with beautifully minimalist visuals and characters that feel real. I've seen an okay amount of war movies, such as Full Metal Jacket and The Pianist-both of which I really like, and while I may not be an expert (still haven't watched Platoon or Apocalypse Now), this is the greatest war-related story I've ever seen, personally.

My Neighbor Totoro: I hear some people complain that this movie feels to "small," but that's part of the reason I love it. Despite being this huge cultural icon, Totoro is a pretty chill movie, but has enough edge (I hate that word lol) sprinkled in to keep older viewers involved. One side of it gives off a sense of childhood wonder, while another almost makes you feel the joy of parenting. Also, it really feels like Miyazaki put a lot of himself into this movie. Not only is the father inspired by his own, but also because the movie is able to be interesting without violence (something he hates when used senselessly) and its non-preachy environmentalism.

I remember watching Ponyo when I was younger. Such a good movie. :) Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro are also great, but I personally find Spirited away to be the most gorgeous movie in all aspects.
