Future holiday DLC...

Do we need to pay for membership to go online for AC just to download DLC in the game?

I would like, at some point to go online to play with others but... If I didn't want to pay, would I be forced to pay to download holidays? How does this work?
I don't own a Switch yet but we've already been told that holiday NPC's are now DLC which I don't mind at all because they can change the holiday up each year yay but ya know... Online sub ( *>艸<)

So I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but is it really free? I just thought about it when I was writing on another thread... ε-(?・｀)

Oh, that's good to know!
I was wondering when I get my switch and make my phone the router if I'd need the subscription first to even run the internet test.

I'll still get a years subscription to trade.
