Gold tool mechanics in New Horizons really don't make any sense :(

I also only crafted the tools to get the nook achievements and then stored them away. Yes, Nintendo should have been made unbreakable. I can only surmise that they are breakable because there is an achievement relating to breaking tools. The urge to get the breakable took achievement is diminished if the player can have access to tools that don't break.

By the way, I unlocked the gold axe last because I rarely harvest wood.

I know I already said my piece on this topic, but something that always bugged me about the tools breaking is why didn't the terraforming tools break or the vaulting pole/ladder? Granted these would be more of a pain to deal with, but it just doesn't make sense. If you pick and choose what breaks and what doesn't, then there really isn't a pattern.

I remember expecting the ladder and pole to break when I first crafted them and kept waiting for it to break with each use. If they have these set to never break, they could've easily set the gold tools to never break.
My guess for the ladder and vaulting pole is that allowing them to break would allow you to get stuck very easily. You could get trapped on your tier 2 cliff with no way to get to a crafting bench, we’d have to carry crafting benches at all times which isn’t very intuitive

Other than the watering can they really have no purpose. I was already dissapointed that they didnt have special things like they did in New Leaf (Net has bigger radius, rod has easier bite-timing, shovels have a change at making money trees which now all shovels do, watering can watered 9 flowers which it still does, axe never breaks, Slingshot shoots 3 pellets.) but now its absolutely useless because they cant even be unbreakable. The worst part is the golden axe's special feature in past games was that it was the only axe that never broke and now it does....

Edit: Something else I wanted to say was that Silver tools no longer exist. They also had some cool benefits that the golden ones didnt have making them also quite important (Net and Rod are irrelevant as they have smaller radius than the gold but more than the normal, same for the watering can and slingshot just less than the gold, shovel though has a high chance of producing ores from the money rock rather than bells, axe ALWAYS gives you a special design on stumps)

Flimsy tools make sense that they break. You craft them from sticks. After that, it shouldn't be a thing. And it should've never happened to gold tools. I haven't crafted a single gold tool. It was simply there way of padding the game's time artificially.

Agreed. Ideally it should have been that the flimsy tools are the only ones that break since the player crafts them at the start of the game out of whatever resources they could easily collect from nature, and would later have the incentive to buy a real tool from the shop. At the very least, I feel the gold tools should not have been given a durability. Infinite durability should have been the reward for gold tool. This is exactly how the golden axe was treated in previous entries.

We have Rescue Services going to waste.

I remember thinking the same thing too regarding those tools. I don't think I'd have been even remotely surprised if this ended up happing as well:

But in my opinion, breakable tools in Animal Crossing is just an all-around terrible idea (being limited to just the axe in prior games was fine, and the flimsy tools was understandable), and having golden tools be breakable is just plain stupid.

Back in the older AC games the only tool that would break was your Axe and they made sure to let you know when its about to break by looking at your inventory and you start to see "cracks" on the axe. At least you were able to tell when its about to be broken. Heck even in another Nintendo game Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild when you use weapons the game says "Your (insert weapon here) is about to break" again at least it gave you a head up when its about to break.

ACNH fails at this so hard. Even after getting the golden tools it just makes it more worthless. What is even the point of using them if you cannot customize them to restart their durability? You can do that on regular Tools but not the golden or flimsy ones. It just blows my mind its like to quote AVGN "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!"

I was still surprised to see this not fixed i the 2.0 update. We can only hope they don't do this nonsense in the next game. I'd rather have no breaking tools at all, but if they're so adamant on it, at least make golden ones unbreakable please.

the watering can breaks... that one makes no sense to me 😭 and i wish the normal customizable watering cans could only water one plant at a time like flimsy ones do, i prefer that way even if it takes more time.

If they do continue to include crafting and tool durability in future titles, my main hope is that they make the rework the game to actually work with it, as opposed to just taking New Leaf as a base and slapping a crafting mechanic on top of it. Basically, take further inspiration from games like Minecraft at a more involved level than "this game exists."

I craft and use gold tools sometimes, but I honestly don't see why they were included in the first place - You work hard to get the DIYs and gold nuggets are rare/hard to come by, but they break just like the other tools. At least they have a decent amount of durability.
That being said, it's not very ideal to use for getting the Nook Miles achievement for breaking a certain amount of tools (can't remember the name of it) because of its durability.
I'm not a huge fan of the crafting mechanic in NH, especially with the tools since they break, and implementing this with the gold tools just baffles me.

I'm gonna be on the unpopular side and say that I love the breakable tools, and that golden ones break. I think they make perfect sense in a game where crafting is a big part of it. My only change to how they work would be to either make them more durable so that people who are constantly redoing their islands won't have to make new ones as often and so people who play more casually/are not using them all the time won't notice them breaking as often.

As a suggestion for the game, I think the reward for finishing the "break tools" Nook Miles Achievement would be that your tools don't break. Because once you complete that achievement, there isn't a point for your tools to break and then you can decide if you want to use the cute flimsy ones or the ones you can buy from Nooklings and never have to worry about them breaking.

Even so that doesn't excuse the problem with the tools breaking. The problem is that you cannot even tell if a tool is going to break. Again like in the other AC games the only tool that would break is the Axe and you can see it has cracks on it that gives an indication of the tool breaking.

I do like the idea of if you complete the acheievent you should not have all the tools break but let me just say I completed the trash tools acheivement a few years ago and the tools still break. The only way to stop tools from breaking is go see Katrina on Harvs Island and get a fortune where she says "Belongings will improve", but its only a random luck chance of that happening.

My main problem with tools breaking is that you need to carry around multiple shovels at once to avoid having to go and craft/buy more. It eats up room in my inventory and drives me crazy.

I don't understand nintendo's thinking on this at all. What they should have done(and what would've made sense) is yes initial tools do break because we are making them out of whatever we find. Store bought tools come from the main land and therefore wouldn't break. And golden tools would have added benefits like the net would be bigger for easier bug catching, fish grab the bobber on the gold rod quicker etc. It makes no sense for tools bought in a store to break like that, none at all. And yes the golden tools are pointless in this game. I made them for the achievements, stuck them in my storage and haven't touched them since(i think i did break my very first one but made a new one and never used it). As previously stated gold nuggets are way too rare a resource to waste(and using to make something that breaks is a huge waste). And I know some will say the gold tools last longer than the regular ones and that's true, but not enough to make it worth the resources imo. There a number of things nintendo has done with this version of the game that i just don't get, i hope they do better in the future.

It sort of feels like an oversight that golden tools break, considering how uncommon it is to find gold nuggets from hitting rocks, the fact that there are other furniture and clothing DIYs that use gold nuggets, and how much time and effort that goes into earning the ability to craft them. If you went through all of the effort of catching all of the fish and bugs and donating them all to the musem, rescued the perpetually beached Gullivar 30 times, achieved a 5-star rated island, shot down 300 balloons and broke 100 axes, I'm pretty sure that's a bit of an indication that you don't need another time and resource sink to keep you playing the game. Especially since there are other time sinks like only being able to buy one top, bottom, sock, shoe, etc. at a time at the Able Sisters' shop instead of having a shopping cart option for bulk purchasing. On some level it feels a bit inconsiderate to the people most invested in your games to give such a "reward" when you can keep regular tools from breaking by just customizing them at a workbench and replenishing their uses. If Golden Tools had to be tied into the item durability mechanic with all of the other normal tools, they could've at least let us customize them to other neat looks like silver or platinum or something.

I've never bothered to craft any of the Golden Tools because I'd rather use my gold nuggets on the other DIYs that utilize gold nuggets. I purchased a Golden Axe from someone on here ages ago just because it's neat, but I have no intention of ever hitting anything with it. If I ever craft the other Golden Tools for the sake of the achievement, the only one I can foresee getting use out of is the Golden Watering Can because Gold Roses are neat. All of the other Golden Tools would just sit in my storage or on display.

Even so, I don't care lol. This isn't other AC games, so things are different and I was saying I like it. People still love to whine and complain about the changes in NH years later as if it's gonna change anything.
