We were lucky to see a lot of our old favourite NPCs in the direct yesterday, as well as some new ones, but I?m interested to know what everyone thinks the roles of those we haven?t seen yet will be, as well as thoughts on some of some of the NPCs that we?ve only seen briefly!
daisy mae will obviously be in charge of selling turnips; i for one find her adorable, despite not being too interested in turnips.
flick and cj will be in charge of hosting the fish/bug tournaments - cj is super cute but flick kind of scares me a bit? idk they?re cool but their vibes feel weird lmao.
i feel like wisp will have a similar role to what he did in the gamecube version; in the direct, we see him becoming startled when approached by the player which might result in him losing his spirits - you?ll have to go and collect them for him and afterwards you?ll get a reward.
tom nook will be in charge of the remodel/customization/design aspect of resident services.
isabelle will be in charge of changing the town flag/town tunes/etc like she was in new leaf.
saharah is still selling her carpets and wallpapers.
harvey is uh,, in charge of the phototopia thing, i guess?
gulliver is still washing up on our beaches
as for the others, i really don?t know. k.k slider and dr. shrunk will probably hold the same purpose they?ve always had; to play music and teach us emotions - where they?ll do that this time, i have no idea.
tortimer might still be on his island that we?ll hopefully be able to visit again and if so, that?s likely will kapp?n will be, too.
since i?m pretty sure streetpass is no longer a thing, maybe digby will have a house exterior store, like tom nook did in new leaf. if not, maybe he?ll join lyle at the HHA.
and maybe the old npcs like nat and chip will also be at tortimer?s island, if that?s still around?
overall, i?m excited to meet the new characters and to see our old favourites c:
^ I think I’m most interested rn to see where KK and Shrunk will be located, as currently I have no idea - they’ve both had a few different locations throughout the past games so I’m excited to see what NH will bring for them!
Hopefully we'll see the NPCs return in some form or other - I'd like to imagine, since the Resident Services is open 24/7, that Digby would take over the night shift for Isabelle so she can get some rest! :3
I really hope not. Tortimer is such an iconic NPC and has the funniest dialogue. Maybe they can get away with throwing out a minor guy like Frillard, but I think they?ll keep Tortimer. If not, RIP
I think a lot of NPC will only be around for amiibo visits. Maybe it?s better than sticking them in roles that might not fit. Kind of a bummer, though.
Thought I’d bring this thread back now that the game is out and we’re more aware of what certain NPCs do! Just a note to please be mindful of spoilers for those that are only a few days in and haven’t time-travelled, so may not have encountered certain characters that appear further in the game.

I'm interested to see what Cyrus' and Reese's purpose could be if they made it back into the game since now you basically take care of your own crafting.
I really liked the fact that they were a married couple and that Cyrus was such a hard worker while his faithful wife helped him around the shop.
I hope they bring them back.
I also really like Shampoodle and the whole notion of going there and sitting in that hairdresser's chair while she did magic to your hair... but again, with the ability to change our look with the help of the mirror I wonder what purpose she'd have.

I also really like Lottie - especially when you'd encounter her makeup-less and she virtually had no eyes. haha
And her rambling on about her crush, Digby. It was really cute. I hope she's back.
