Have you ever wanted/shunned a villager because of their name?

Ankha and Lucky were two of the villagers I wanted for their Egyptian names and looks in French (Neferti and Ramses, and I find these better than English ones especially Lucky because with all his bandages and the name... Idk, pretty sad I think?)

Fang's name is Pierrot in French, like in the song 'Au clair de la lune' so I find his name really cool too and can't wait to meet him! Wolfgang is in the same case, pretty name!

Rory's name is Hercule in French as well, I love mythological names!

Whoa Ankha and Lucky's Egyptian names are so much more fitting than the English ones! Did not know that. (also Lucky looks super unlucky because of the bandage look haha. ) Fang and Rory's names in French sounds like fairytale characters :) Wolfgang is such as cool name too, but I actually know someone with this name in irl so it feels a bit odd to have him on my island

Soooo Julian lol, I love his design but the name *urghhhhh* for real, nothing against Julians but a frigging unicorn named JULIAN? Idk, doesn't speak to me. I'll still try to get him tho but that name will always be an eye-sore lol

I actually thought Julian is quite fitting for an Unicorn haha XD.. what would you have named him as an alternative?
Oh I forgot a big one!
Boris! I love pretty much everything about him and would love to invite him to my island.

But every time I hear his name I just think of the prime minister.
I've nothing against the prime minister as such but he's got such a strong cartoony character I don't think I can take a villager with that name seriously.

OMG hahaha. Now I make the connection I can't take either Boris the villager or the prime minister seriously 😅

There isn't any for me. If there was one that shared my name i would probably avoid them unless I used a made up name for my player.
For villagers with very human names like Toby or Erik... It does sound really odd and akward to say I want ______. In my opinion. But not enough for me to avoid them.

yeah it really is awkward to say that.... especially if you know someone irl who shares the same name. This is why I wish Nintendo would name the new villagers with less common names going forward...the brain just makes the connection and cannot be controlled

I dragged Claude to my island solely because of his name. It's the same name of a character from a videogame I used to play!

broffina only for the memes. she's such a bro.

oh and sally for obvious reasons but now i actually do like her outside of her name

lily is my favorite frog villager because of her name! it's so obvious for a frog but also adorable!

i really like raymond's design but i really dislike the name raymond so its kinda pulled me away from wanting him on my island

I like Sterling's name and also Knox's. I'm not a big fan of the name Judy for Judy but it didn't stop me from inviting her when I found her on a mystery island. I don't think that I pick for names but I like when the name matches the character. Like, Savannah's name matches her design. I just didn't think Judy matched Judy very well. Such a 50s name for a bear cub with pastel kid style house.

I haven't shunned a villager for their name, but I can see why others would. It comes down to preference and it often ends up being as important as their outward appearance; even personality to some.

I would never pick up Ken because his name is basically my ex's name and it's just like. No. I don't need that reminder lmao. He was in my camp one time and I was like how bout you get off my island asap pal?
Kind of funny how a villager name can annoy me like that!

Dizzy I love extra because he shares the name of one of my beloved rats! Who is actually a girl but it's whatever.
Other villagers off the top of my head that share names with my rats are~
Cookie
Lily
Willow
Rosie
Rory
There might be more that I'm forgetting right now. I keep thinking I could make an island one day with villagers that all share names with my rats one day haha. It's comforting to see them, but of course can be a painful reminder of the ones who have passed.

I go with villagers who i like by how their design, house, name and personality go together or you know, just like.

But.

There is one Villager who I love mostly by name alone. I find his design to be cool enough, his colors fun, best personality, his house an odd choice and his clothes odder. But his name is everything.

Cyrano.

I'm a huge fan of Cyrano de Bergerac as a character and the play. Even more that in animal crossing an ANTEATER is named after him haha.

But I wished he had more of a French Renaissance vibe then a Zen style. But he's also an og villager whose original name is Sakurajima so I can understand how the name Cyrano was just the translation team having fun, yet still.

So far I don’t think I’ve rejected or specifically chosen any villager based on their name. I mostly pick my villagers by their design (usually if they look cute to me then they’ve got a chance of moving to the island), their personality and sometimes by the interior of their house - though this isn’t as big a factor as the other two. There is only one villager that I can think of that shares a name with a family member or close friend (Benjamin) but I’ve never considered having him due to his design rather then his name. Though to be honest if more villagers did have the same name as family/friends I’d probably avoid them as I think it would start to feel odd playing the game with too many of them.

There are a number of villagers though that I’d avoid mostly because of their design or personality but where their name definately doesn’t help either:
Boris - his teeth are the biggest problem for me but as someone else has said his name reminds me of the prime minister
Elmer - mainly wouldn’t take him as I find one lazy is enough but not a fan of him sharing his name with the glue
Chops, Pancetti, Pate, Rasher and really any other villager with food name - again the names are the biggest reason for shunning them but I’m not really a fan of villagers been named after the food they’d become

Never chosen to have a villager based on their name but I do think Aurora is a really beautiful name and will probably have her at some point - it helps that she’s a cute penguin :giggle:

There are a couple of villagers with rather immature names that I avoid solely for that reason.

Regarding my Julian hate post lol, I have no specific idea on what else to call him tbh, but maybe something less...modern? At least I feel like Julian is a pretty modern name for a supposedly mythical creature...

To be fair, Julian has been used as a name since roman times. So it's been around for quite a while now, like 1700 years at least :p

My sister is called Eloïse

When we were both younger we played ACWW together and I think one of us at one point had the villager, Eloise, in our town.
And whenever I see her in PC it always reminds me of her so if I ever got her moving in I don't think I'd let her leave- which I would have if she didn't share the name.

My dad's name gets shortened to Rod , I've never had the villager in any of my towns but for the same reason, I would keep him just for his name if he did ever move in bahahaha

I hunted down June in NL because I was making a town based on a series which one of the character names was nicknamed June. - I'd have never of known the villager even existed if I didn't look her up haha

True lol, but still... There's better suited "old names" I think, even if it would just be Julius or something, maybe even Quintus or Gaius (insert flashback from my latin classes). Even Equus would work well considering he's a mythical horse lol. I've decided to still take him in on my new Island if i come across him, because he's just fab :p

biff. like what kind of name is that?? plus he literally has the same birthday as me, that’s a nono. it’s not even just based on that, i mean kiki the cat shares the same name as me but id be perfectly fine if she was on my island. though the game wouldn’t let me name my character kiki for some reason, which is weird because the previous games allowed me to, so i got stuck with my nickname keeks (which im perfectly fine with) biff on the other hand i very much dislike. and it just so happened he was one of the two starter villagers for me on nh. since we got nh on the day of release, a good 9 days after, me and biff celebrated our birthday together unfortunately. probabaly the worst day ever, but got him to move out soon after. good riddance biff!

Our localised names suck so much, most of them are so outdated and cringey.
