I just do everything without thinking about any kind of back story.
In New Horizons, however, my character will definitely have one, related to my friends villager.
My character will be named Narcisse (french version of Narcissus) and hers will be named Echo! In reference to Narcissus' Myth, of course. We might think about a deeper backstory later, too.
