How do I get to the island?

I can't figure it out. Maybe there's something I haven't done yet, idk.
& also, how do I swim?

You get the island on the third/fourth day of playing. Tortimer visits you and the next day Kapp'n appears on your dock, and you can visit the island for 1,000 bells.

To swim, you can borrow a wet suit on the island (not being able to take it back with you), or get enough medals to buy one of your own on the Island's shop.

To add to fantasea's post: You must pay off your $39,800 bell loan before Tortimer will show up.

& if you miss Tortimer, paying your next loan will trigger him showing up again.
