How hard to find Raymond?

Any day now I'm due for another escapee from my island. I would really like to hunt down Raymond as part of my permanent final 10 residents. I say this every time, but always get 10-20 NMT into the hunt and find a cool looking villager and settle for them.

So...is he more rare than any other islander or do you have the same chance to get him as the others? I have about 240k miles and about 40 tickets in storage. I'd be bummed out to go through all that surplus and still not get the goofy eyed cat. Any advice?

You have the same chance as others to get him. Basically the game rolls a dice to determine what villager you get. (Octopi are the most rare because there are only 3).
A tip to make it easier to find him is to not have any smug villagers. Why? Because the game has a higher chance of giving you personalities you don't have (although not garented)
I hope you get raymond!

Actually, it is totally random and based on pure luck with your RNG. The personality of residents you have does not affect the ones that appear on the mystery islands. Personalities only affect the campsite.

Also, species with fewer villagers are more likely to show up, which is the reason why Octopi shows up often and cats are so rare.

Finding Raymond could be quick or not. I found Raymond after 243 tickets. Others are too lucky and got him on their first 10 tickets.

I wish you good luck. Happy hunting.

Okay, see that's what I thought but I wasn't positive so I wasn't gonna say it 😝

It might be worth checking the forums here, too, to see if anyone ever has him available for adoption! I found my Raymond on here pretty quick (but I offered to overpay in TBT, lol). While he is just as rare as any other villager on mystery islands, a lot of people who may not necessarily want him have a tendency to grab him if they see him JUST to sell/trade. So it can't hurt to keep your eyes on the "New Neighbor Network" here to see if you can find a deal!

Either way, best of luck! Some people may find him overrated, but I personally think his design deserves all the love he gets- he's such a handsome little cat ☺

If it helps, here's a villager calculator. You can use it to check how many tickets you might need to find Raymond.

Of course this is not 100% accurate. I've been looking for Audie and it says I have a 40% chance of finding her with 200 tickets. But I've spent 324 tickets and never found her.

isn’t it the exact opposite for octopi? when island hopping the game basically rolls for species first, then the villager itself. if you’re looking for a specific octo, it’s 1/35*1/3 as opposed to cats for example which would be 1/35*1/23.

that being said, statistically speaking raymond is one of the tougher villagers to get because of the odds above, but it’s not impossible to find him. it may take a bit but you’ll find him eventually, i’m sure!

I could never find him last year. I remember I wasted like 800 nmts trying to find him and I gave up. So I had to bite the bullet and actually get him on Nookazon. The great news was I was able to find a trusted seller and I only gave them 400 nmts. I was nervous since I've had so much bad experience with trading, but nevertheless the trade actually went well, I spoke to Raymond he was in boxes, he agreed to come on my island, and I finally got him.

So in total I spent 1,200 nmts just to get him. He probably is one of the hardest villagers to find. I hear that he is easier to get when you like restart your island because for whatever reason a lot of people seem to get him on the campsite as their first visitor.

Thank you all. I see that there are people on Ebay that offer him, but that seems like it could be a real hassle. So I'd have to have a villager already in boxes and then HOPE that the seller gets me to him in time?

Of course, going through all of the Dodo Airline dialogue a few hundred times is a bit of a hassle too.

Ha, said if I use 200 tickets, I have a 22% chance. Kind of a cool little tool though, thanks

In addition to everything else that's been said here, I'm pretty sure, if you have an amiibo of a cat villager, and you scan them into the campsite, they can't appear on mystery islands. So that increases your chances of seeing Raymond on a mystery island a tiny bit. Because the game doesn't know that Raymond is popular. It treats him like any other cat. Not like any other villager, and not like any other smug--like any other cat.

Really? Ok, that's cool, I have a few cat amiibos, thank you

I would avoid eBay, personally, you don’t need to pay real money to get him! I think you have plenty of time to find him and he comes up for trade pretty often on here, even as a giveaway.

and you could get lucky! I decided to just let myself find tabby, my favorite villager, whenever it happened naturally, and when I found her it was after only 9 tickets (she has the same odds as Raymond, which is why I mention it)! So although you can’t necessarily count on it, sometimes you do just get lucky!🤞

what I would do personally would be island hop as long as it is fun, and then take a villager you like. You will get Raymond eventually! And I feel like it will be more enjoyable for you if you don’t have to go to 1000 islands (though if you enjoy island hopping, have at it, and please let us know how it goes!)

may the odds be ever in your favor ;)

I used to enjoy island hopping, not so much anymore. If I have to read "what would dodos do" one more time I may start screaming and never stop. :)

Well if you really want to take the risk try Nookazon but BE warned there is alot of people who scam for Raymond so look for a seller who has trusted reviews, because I did it myself and I got so lucky finding the one seller who was actually not that troublesome.

I was lucky and got Raymond as my second camper(smug was the only personality I didn’t have at that time). I will say that I have never found a cat on a mystery island but I find octopi every time(sometimes more than 1 of them) and always Octavian. But then I don’t want any of them so it only makes sense I always find them.

There’s really no advice other than hope you’re lucky. I’ve already encountered him three times so I think you’re eventually bound to see him if you go island hopping often enough.

If you have the ability (and don't mind temporarily wrecking your island) scan in 9 cat amiibos before going island hopping. That'll reduce the number of cats other than Raymond that you'll find if you land on a cat island....and given that there's a ton of cats in the game, every little bit helps.

Cats, rabbits, or any species that has large pool of villagers are incredibly difficult to find. If you are aiming for a specific villager like Raymond that will make things even more challenging. Someone on YouTube once used over 1000 NMT to try to find merry the cat, and I have to say, even watching the video was pretty painful. If you have your mind quite set on getting Raymond, I think you are better off buying him on this forum using the forum bells. Or, you will just have to pray that RNG god is on your side...

I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but the odds of finding any one specific villager through island hopping are very low. According to the calculator, even if you have 9 cats on your island (stacking the odds in your favor), the chance of finding a specific cat start at less than 1%. As you saw, it does seem to increase the more tickets you use - I'm not exactly sure how that works, but that is good to know.

If you're not opposed to time-traveling, the campsite method is more reliable, although you'd have to get rid of the other smugs on your island for it to work, and it could take several hours. I assume it still works the same way as it used to, but I'm not sure if anything has changed with the updates.

You might also want to keep an eye on the New Neighbor Network. 5 people have listed him on there in the past month.

Good luck in your search, I hope you find him some way!

It’s totally random and complete luck. I’ve known people throw 500+ tickets at the islands and still not see him. But then I got him to show up on only my 2nd ticket. 🤷‍♀️

For sanity’s sake, I’d seriously look into trading or buying him. It’s expensive but the price has dropped since the game first came out and a lot of people, especially on here, are pretty reasonable with him.
