Some people just don't want others to know when they're online. I'm not exactly sure why.

Then there are some people who use it all the time, and put "invisible mode always on" in their sig. I mean I don't exactly get the point, but whatever.

its the online equivalent of sitting quietly in the corner, but piping in when you have something to say :~) Sometimes, if people already know you're there, they expect you to do or say what they're imagining, when you'd like to do your own thing! Sometimes, it's not important to people if everyone knows they're present!

It's also a convenient solution for if you are often on your mobile or leave tabs open on your computer for an eternity. I guess that'd be the social equivalent of checking out mentally, but still being present !

I typically use invisible mode for these reasons.

Invisible has many perks to it. I don't use it much anymore, but when I was working on something and didn't want to be bothered (back in the day of reporting everything in pm's instead of the button even if it was there) I'd turn it on just to get some peace and quiet. I'm sure it's utilizable for many people in that way.

People will often VM or PM you if they know you're online. Sometimes you just want some privacy. You want time to read through threads without being disturbed. I've used it a couple of times, but I just prefer to keep my VMs turned off now.

It is to make it so that other users don't know that you are online.

Because you don't show up in the "currently browsing" aka Thread Info tab at the bottom that shows who's viewing the thread. Easy lurking.

It won't say your name, but it will say that someone is viewing the thread e.g. "There are 2 members and 3 guests viewing this thread: Hoppy~Shnell,"

I used to not use the invisible function, but then I noticed someone who kept returning to my profile every couple days or so. They'd always send me a PM/VM when I was on. I finally said enough and turned invisible. They stopped coming to my profile, and stopped sending me PM/VMs. I like having the freedom to just browse about, without people being able to know what I'm up to or when I'm on. People also tend to get mad if they see you on, but you don't reply to their PM/VM. Seriously, calm down bud my life does not revolve around you. I will get to your PM/VM when I can/see it.

So to avoid all of that, I just kept invisible on.
