Nah!! I think the joke came because in the first 3 games he pretty much forces you to upgrade your house every time you pay off the debt which made some people joke he's wanting to keep you always in debt. But really, he's a super nice guy. he just gives you a house when you need one, and yes he gives you big loans but you don't even need to pay them if you don't want to. Why does he do this? Just to help the player I think. In every game he's there to offer advice and teach you the ropes of the game, deffo a good guy :)

he's a good & patient dude and gives you a house at a really cheap price and even gives you advice (or a job depending on the game) on paying for it; wish my new landlord was even half as nice as him lmao

I think he's a cool guy haha. Think he just an addiction to Bells lol :)

Nope not evil, just a particularly enterprising individual. He's not nearly as bad as business tycoons in real life. At least it's possible to pay off your loan in a reasonable amount of time. There's no deadline and he doesn't even charge interest on your loan.
I think the loan fees he demands are totally fair. Wish it was that easy irl!

I never thought he did even back in the past when people thought he was because of his "harsher" dialogue. It's interesting how now new fans that got into the series with New horizons don't think Tom Nook is evil and I see it mostly being mentioned as a joke more than a fact.
With New horizons there is no reason for players to theorize Tom Nook could be evil because his dialog is pretty neutral and tame. All characters in NW are too bland to be seen as evil there is simply no personality or backstory to make them stand out.
A few years back there was real Tom Nook hate coming from the idea he was secretaly the leader of some "evil" organization or that he exploited the villagers and the player and while I don't mind these ideas when used as memes and jokes there was a time people were really aggressive with those ideas and for them it wasn't a joke which made me feel real excluded at the time because Tom Nook is my favorite special character.
I'm always open for any types of headcanon people have to share about Animal crossing and I sure love the more darker ones but the Tom Nook ones always felt very odd to me. The reason they came up were because he was rude to the player and that Nook grew a business. For me a character that might be "rude" and that has money and business doesn't equal evil but for many people a rich fat character equals evil greedy character for some reason.
Personally I always saw Tom Nook as a mentor character and a father figure for the player. Sure in the older games he was a bit more harsh with his words but so were the all other villagers. I am aware there's a piece of dialog when Nook jokes about having goons but I took that as a joke by Nook to scare you a bit but never meaning it. I liked when Tom had that scary humor and I miss it. Even with the scary humor in the old games it is very clear how much Tom Nook cares for the player and helps them prosper along with him.
Maybe that now Nintendo created Marlo and hinted that he is a leader of a secret organization people will abandon the Tom Nook headcanon that he is the leader of said organization or they could even connect the two XD I'm surprised with so much talk about Nook being evil and having an organization I have yet to see art of Nook interacting with Marlo but then again I think nowadays people love Tom way more than hate him.
I think factors that might have also helped people see Nook in a better light was the fact that now he is working with Isabella which is the fandoms precious character and his rivalry with Redd that was brought up again during 2020 by fanart and memes.
So I don't really mind headcanons and the theories that Tom is evil but personally I always like them to have a reason to exist.

I agree with you ! :) Loads of avenues to repay the loans.

Very interesting read! I didn't know he had a rivalry with Redd. That's hilarious to me haha.

Is he ambitious, clever, a bit calculating perhaps? Definitely. But I also think he genuinely cares about his community
I agree. He helps you build an island from scratch so he definitely cares about his community. I just think he's a raccoon with a plan, he knows what he wants and what to do at all times lol.

If you get him a home in Happy Home Designer his dialogue addresses this. I don’t remember what he said, i do remember it making me go “aww he’s not so bad.” Also no interest on loans? sign me up! Also no due dates, he lets you work debt off if you need to in some games, and he’s given MANY people opportunities to grow their businesses. Like the Able Sisters, Gracie Grace, the Resetti brothers, etc.

I don’t think he’s all that bad just very frugal and entrepreneurial. I feel like he’s worked hard for what he’s created.

I agree with all this. He's a hard worker, very entrepreneurial but is fair with his fellow islanders :)

I don't think he's evil at all. In the previous games, the reason why he charged so much for your house extensions was so he can donate to orphans. He's harsh on training Timmy and Tommy (he has them work longer hours than the Able Sisters, let that sink in) to teach them grinding ways of the Nook. He generously lets Isabelle sleep on the job right in front of him.

I don't think Tom is an evil guy. A jerk? Kinda. Manipulative? Arguable. But evil? I don't think so

Like father like sons. Teach them early lol :)

Tom Nook lived an whole character arc between the first iteration of the series until now. Could he have been evil in the first game? Perhaps? In New Horizons? Definitely not. Tom Nook learned, grew, and matured to be who he is today.

I find him hilarious, my favourite character in the series.
