Is your island themed?

If I ever actually finish terraforming/designing my island...it'll be based largely around its namesake, Daguerreo from Final Fantasy IX. So basically...a flooded library.

And once my AC Switch is delivered, I'm planning to recreate my all-bunny town from NL, which is a memorial/rainbow bridge theme. If such a thing exists.

I was about to write a very enthusiastic reply at finding another Poveglia, until I read you might not be as excited about its name anymore because there are others out there... It almost makes me feel as if I'm ruining your fun :(
No worries, you're not to blame. It's just that part of me feels like I'd rather have an island name that's one of a kind/unlikely to have been thought of by anybody else. It's more to do with my inability to come up with such a name and choosing a preexisting island's name as a result. Even now though, no alternatives have ever come to mind. It's to be expected that there would be other Poveglias out there though, since the island and its dark history and supposedly haunted reputation are interesting. Plus, the name itself just sounds cool.

It's not too big of an annoyance regardless, as I've made far too much progress to ever want to reset and I have no desire to get a second Switch and copy of the game. It is what it is. Like I said with regards to Annalisa and Bella too, the island's name and history serve to represent that history has its dark periods. I like that acknowledgment, so it all sort of works out.

My apologies for making you feel bad, it was unintended.

I love how you described how your theme relates to the name though!
Thank you!

Currently, my main theme (As seen in my profile and signature) is my island being an aviary with a nature/garden leaning aesthetic. All of my villagers are of some type of bird species (songbird, chicken, duck, eagle, ostrich, penguin) and I'm currently working on personalizing different sections of my town for each of my different villagers based on their species. My plans right now are:

A duck pond for my duck villagers (Molly, maybe Miranda)
A sparrow rock garden for my songbird villagers (Sparro and Piper, both based on real-life sparrows)
A nest/lounge area for my eagle villagers (Apollo)
A colorful plaza/playground for my peacock villager (Julia)
A winter ice lounge for my penguin villagers (Tex, maybe Friga)
A bamboo forest and spa for my crested ibis villager (Cranston)
A coop area for my chicken villagers (Egbert)
And I'm still figuring out a good theme for Phoebe my phoenix villager.

The rest of my island leans in that garden theme, lots of hedging, stone, and flowers spread out throughout it to give the aesthetic of walking through a giant garden/aviary. I'm probs about halfway done, as I'm still trying to figure out Phoebe's theme and what to do with some of my empty beaches.

Yeah. I'll sum it up in one picture:

As for your theme, it'd be cool if you mashed it together. They both sit within the same realm, metaphorically it's hero/heroine's journey and physically it's a forest/grassy knoll. That works well together.

I really wanted my island to feel like a tourist-y beach town, but not like a resort. It's easy because my island's pretty low-key as a result. It still feels like a place someone would live.

I don't decorate my island with a particular theme in mind. I defer to my villagers' hobbies and career aspirations as sources of inspiration for what sort of attraction to design their yard after. Otherwise, I design sections after what building(s) are located there. For example, Nook's Cranny and Able Sisters' shop are in a commercial district, across from an American-style diner and an Asian restaurant.

In the future, I would potentially consider having a theme, including which villagers to have on my island, but for now, I'm more interested in experiencing island life with various villagers. :>

My island doesn’t really have a theme. I wanted to make my island goose themed because it’s called “Goose Isle”, but I wasn’t sure what to do with it. So far I’ve just put white decoy ducks in random places around the island.
omg pls tell me ur gonna move Goose in i love this dude he's my best friend and bro, his eyebrows??? sculpted by animal crossing Gods

tbh themes have really been murdering me so far. i dont have enough practice with the terraforming tool to bring land-related ideas to life, and i often bounce between wanting specific themes. like i wanted a farm, an enchanted mushroom forest, etc. but i think ive settled on a doable theme: ur most basic looking town. u know, those dudes with a lil fountain area and park benches and cute villager yards?? it looks rly boring in comparison to the works of art some ppl have come up with on tumblr and stuff but man am i basic. that's not to say theyre bad and easy to make, tho. ive seen many islands like this on tumblr and on here and they each have their own unique spin to it, and they can be deceptively complex. this is the only theme ive thought of so far that im more excited rather than anxious to start, so i hope it works out in the end.

My island's theme is world history and the cultures that either have existed throughout it, continue to exist, or might exist in the future. I find the theme fun and enjoyable, though unfortunately some cultures I wanted to include just didn't make the cut due to the 8 player character limit.

I managed to squeeze in:
- Ancient Egypt (Ankha and, due to her house, Diva)
- Ancient Rome (Klaus)
- Arabia (A player character)
- China (Pekoe and a player character)
- India (A player character)
- Ireland (A player character)
- Japan (Kabuki and a player character, but might replace Kabuki)
- Mexico (A player character)
- Prehistory (Tucker)
- Russia (A player character)
- The Future (Ribbot)
- USA (A player character, African-American culture specifically)
- Viking age Scandinavia (Vic)

The last two are Annalisa and Bella. It's a bit dark, but my island's name is Poveglia, which is the name of a real island in the Venetian Lagoon of Italy. I chose the name because it was the first thing that came to mind that sounded good and because we were in the middle of the initial chaos of COVID-19's outbreak. Poveglia ties into that because the real island was used both as a quarantine zone and dumping ground for victims of the bubonic plague centuries ago. As a result, I chose Bella as my Peppy to represent the rats that carried the fleas which spread the disease, while Annalisa became my choice for Normal resident since her design's simplistic white anteater design always gave me the impression of a plague doctor's mask. I find the reference to such things a bit uncomfortable now all these months later (though we're still in the middle of the pandemic) and sometimes wish I could change the island's name (though, to date, I've never come up with a different one) both because of that and because I've seen other Poveglias. That said, it sort of works out in the end because, while I could keep or replace Annalisa, I have no idea what Peppy would fit with my theme other than Bella. None of the other Peppies jump out at me visually. As grim as it is, I guess it also serves to show that history isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

Other cultures that I wanted to include but couldn't fit due to the 8 player character limit included Korean, Native American (would have to research tribes, though I'm interested in doing so anyway), and Polynesian (either Māori or Hawaiian). Maybe French or German too. I guess we're fortunate that we could make 8 characters this time instead of just 4 like before.

Regarding Kabuki since I listed him as replaceable, I might or might not replace him with Olaf who would represent Spain. I might also replace Ankha with a different Snooty since I really hate the Golden Toilet they gave to Ankha in New Horizons in place of the Throne in New Leaf, but I don't know, Ankha seems like the postergirl for Ancient Egypt in these games so it's difficult to figure. If I were to replace Ankha, it would be either with Monique for her Marilyn Monroe-inspired design, or either Mathilda or Yuka to represent Australia.

Sounds extremely creative! I’m a history buff and I strongly approve 😊. Would love to see screenshots of your island or visit your dream address.

My island is far from being done. Initially it was going to be dedicated to Dragon Age like my town in NL was, but I ended up making some rooms in my house dedicated to One Piece and I still have one more idea (not for my house). I also have an area that isn’t based on any one thing specific. I had a couple things in mind while working on it: an outpost from DAI, ancient Egyptian or middle eastern bazaar/marketplace with a little archaeological site. Right behind the market area is something I was originally thinking to be like an outer wall of a ruins area in DAI, then thought about the Hanging Gardens, and then when I looked at a screenshot of Kaldina an ark in Last Cloudia and how it could resemble it, I put more effort to making it and adjusting some of the area around it to make it resemble it more.

I have a country side area too that is actually not based on anything or at least until I decided to make adjustments for my pumpkin crops and make a Don Quixote reference. I might post a picture soon in the pumpkin patch thread depending on how much more I get done.

My main account is a national park themed island. Inspired by a trip to the Southwest USA I did last year, there's so much diversity in parks & nature in such a relatively small area.

My Switch Lite account is a -get ready- Christina Aguilera themed island because a) she's fantastic & b) the visuals & themes throughout her carreer have always been very different from eachother, which makes it a lot of fun recreating those music videos & capturing different themes. Honestly having the best time ever with such a specific theme.

yeah! i’m not too sure how to describe it but basically i’m going for a “rainbow meets rustic” type theme that has a combination of country, fairycore and natural elements with bright colours everywhere :)

but i have a funny feeling with the new update, my theme’s gonna wind up looking more like this,,

I was trying to go for a monster island theme, with like a barbarian camp and ruins everywhere, but it doesn't work too well. I'm thinking of ways to overhaul it, and I'm trying to make a path similar to "the path" to make the island look a bit more rugged and run down

Wow, you guys really are quite creative, and can I just say @Halloqueen - Your theme is so thorough and fleshed out. That's amazing, and I can only imagine how much love and thought went into that idea. ❤

I also love all the "basic" themes as you guys put it yourselves. Sometimes basic is just enough! My first island was in that theme. Park benches, fountain area - just simple living and it was great, 'til I went online and got heavily influenced by all the extensive islands that are around. Now I can't really pull myself to do basic anymore but I still very much enjoy seeing them!

As for my own island, I had planned on mixing the themes up but now with the new update and all the wonderful pumpkin decor (I mean, who didn't fall madly in love with that carriage!?) - I'm even more on the fence of going the forest theme instead. I love Ghibli and I adore the flower field I was making but I don't think the brightness of that theme will blend well with the other I had in mind. Ha, don't you just love it that we only get one island to work our magic on? *cough* 😅 😛

Anyways, before I do anything drastic, which I probably will - I thought I'd show the flower field here. Though it is very much still a WIP (needed way more flowers, scarecrow to mimic turniphead, star fragments and mountain standees in the back, etc).

My first games of a title are usually no-themed or multi-themed. My town planning always revolves around my initial villagers that move in, since I have a soft spot for starting villagers for my first games. Themed towns are so fun though! I have two themed towns in New Leaf. Making a themed town can really transport you to another place. I don’t think it would become too theme park-like as long as you have a few homely areas. But honestly when I play my themed towns I’m always lowkey roleplaying in my head so it’s fine haha 😅 I would definitely make a themed island if I somehow acquire another switch for a second copy.

Not really, I just basically slap stuff I like everywhere :3 All kudos to people who put hard work and themes to theirs, though I wish I had that dedication.

That section of your island is beautiful! Even without all the flowers it needs. It reminds me of Wuthering Heights for some reason and I love it! ❤ Do you have (or are you willing) to share your DA? I would love to come see it in person and see how you made the whole thing. I always wanted to do something like this, but I'm always afraid that I either wouldn't be able to fit it on my island or that I would try to make something like this and it just wouldn't turn out.

- Ancient Egypt (Ankha and, due to her house, Diva)
I had to look up Diva's house, and wow, she is the last villager I'd expect to have and Egyptian themed home lol.

I guess as far as themes go, my island is inspired by canal cities like Amsterdam and Giethoorn. Not as complex since we're only allowed so many bridges and I've narrowed areas of the rivers in some places for ease of access.

Canadian/Northern island, Fairy Tale/Old Hollywood, Castle Ruins and Royal Botanical Gardens.

Those are the themes we work with in our town of Oldenbel.

I have a bunch of differently themed areas on my island, but the one unifying theme is the idea of the whole place being some sort of tourist trap vacation island with a lot of stalls and activities. Most of the villagers are gonna have their own jobs or stalls (currently Tangy has a fruit juice stand and also runs the farm/orchard, Zucker has a takoyaki stall, and Lucky runs the graveyard) and the rest of the villagers are meant to be wealthy visitors on vacation (Audie's gonna have a beach house with a pool, and Kabuki lives in a secluded spot in the bamboo forest as a wealthy retired actor).

My island rep runs the place and is meant to be an unsettling, rich overseer who lives near Kabuki in the bamboo forest away from everything lol.

The main area is kind of European/English village-inspired, but I also have a cottagecore farm area, a graveyard, and an East Asian-inspired area. I'm also trying to keep everything cohesive by mostly just using white and blue flowers and furniture. Currently it's nowhere near complete though, most of my island is barren and I've not finished any area completely yet.
