No, it'll still freeze your game if you throw it in. Well, some people have said it freezes your game, but there isn't enough evidence, so I don't know for sure. But I do know that some are made from golden axes and some from regular axes and can break.

Anyways, you're right. The way your character holds it, it has to be an axe, not a fishing pole. A pole is held with one hand.
