Do you celebrate? If so, how do you?

I'm a black/white mixed Californian, so growing up i never celebrated Lunar New Year outside of pretty basic "Chinese New Year" events we did in school. Even then, I never really understood it, or what it entailed. I may not be the best person to make this thread but I am really curious about how others celebrate the holiday!

In the past few years I've come to semi-celebrate the holiday with a close friend of mine who is second-generation Cantonese. As they've learned more about their culture and things around it I've been lucky enough to learn about it with them and it's become a source of comfort and appreciation for me. Every year I try to take more from the holiday, whether that be legends and stories, reasons behind traditions, or what different foods represent. I wouldn't say I've entirely adopted it as a holiday that I celebrate, but it's definitely a holiday I appreciate.

Weirdly enough I learn a lot about it through Genshin Impact. It being a chinese-made game, they celebrate Lunar New Year every year with their Lantern Rite event and put a lot of genuine love and passion into it. It's been so interesting to see where pieces of that event come from and their real-world counterparts. Media is influenced by real life, and I'm autistic as all heck, so picking up culture through the media I consume along with the research I do alongside said media is the best way for me to come to understand things like this.

Regardless, that's kinda my opening input. Tell me all about your plans for Lunar New Year, if you have any, and what it means to you!

I've had several colleagues who are Chinese or have Chinese heritage and usually we celebrated Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year with a group meal, often yum cha. Some of my colleagues have moved away over time, and the rest of us weren't able to celebrate last year. I'm not yet sure if we'll celebrate this year!

I have an online friend I speak with over social media sometimes who is a native of Chongqing.

I don't know too much about the day myself, but she mentioned having the whole week off work for it.

I don't celebrate it, me being white and all, but at work a lot of our customers are Chinese so I've been making lots of advertisements and social posts for the company for it. Been learning a bit about it and what goes on during it.

I'm year of the dog btw! What is everyone here?

My dad doesn’t do anything that major for the holiday. The area where I live doesn’t have a large enough Asian community to do anything for Lunar New Year.

Don't celebrate it myself since it's not part of my culture, but there's a chinese community not to far from where I live and they put out decorations and stands of food and other goodies. I tend to go because it's all delicious so I guess I get into the spirit a bit. Plus if my money helps them to celebrate good for them lol.

Yeah, I don't know much about it outside of Genshin Impact, BUT at one point my uni did have an event that was LNY-inspired, lmao. And I still remember the site event here on TBT that was LNY-inspired. Would definitely like to learn more about it though, it seems very interesting.

I'm year of the horse! On top of being Sagittarius I'm like some kinda double centaur.

That's a shame honestly. We have a huge Asian population where I live so there's a whole smorgasbord of different ways its celebrated over here. The message I've gained from the holiday is community and family with what you have, even if it's just your close family.

Dude the food is always SO good.

I genuinely think Genshin is a good launchpad for learning about it. Of course you have to consider cultural biases (it's very much a Chinese lunar new year, for example) but researching into different aspects of Lantern Rite is super cool! I learned so much about lion dancing when Gaming came out that I just like... took for granted growing up.

I'm late but happy Lunar New Year!! It was just yesterday!! I spent the day hanging out with my friend & playing Genshin like we do every year!!

I always celebrate Chinese New Year! I'm half Chinese so me and my family always come together over the week and cook together. Sometimes we even make little paper lanterns, just some fun stuff! 🧧🥢🥮
I hope you had/have a good New Year with family!! That sounds like a lot of fun.

We did end up celebrating Chinese New Year! We all went to dinner tonight and shared tea and food, which is our usual tradition. 🩷

They ordered marinated roasted duck, sizzling Mongolian lamb, whole steamed fish, egg fried rice, green beans in garlic and chilli, and tofu and mixed vegetables noodle hotpot! I tried the latter three (since I don't love meat), and they were all really good! 🎉

Oh hey, I'm also a Sagittarius born in the Year of the Horse! Nice, haha.

I've unfortunately never really celebrated the Lunar New Year in real life since, if there are any celebrations around my area, I've never been aware of them. I'd be interested in getting more invested and participating if I find myself in a place with festivities in the future, or, like S.J. mentioned, if I find friends or colleagues who celebrate it and they invite me to celebrate with them.

I hope everyone has a great Year of the Snake!

We celebrate Tet/Vietnamese Lunar New Year.
Cleaning is done days before and cooking traditional foods the days approaching Tet. Night before Temple hosts celebrations and dragon dancing. Day of we traditionally stay home and observe offerings/prayers to altars for ancestors, buddha, and other figures. No cleaning or cooking on the day traditionally.
The weekend following we go back to temple to do more incense and to do fortunes for the year and sometimes to family houses for big meal together and to exchange li xi (lucky envelope).

Some businesses make donation for dragon dances to come bless their business. So, you can catch them the week before and week after in the area too.
