You're my only hope. Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars ... no wait.

Anyway. I just recently picked up Mario Galaxy, Zack & Wiki and Guitar Hero III via the Toys R Us buy 2 get 1 deal. I was originally planning on holding off on Mario Galaxy, but so many of the reviews were so positive I figured I'd grab it anyway (eschewing Battalion Wars 2 and Fire Emblem in the process). I love the original Mario series (the NES and Super NES games), very much liked Mario 64 and have yet to play Sunshine.

With that out of the way, I'm so far very underwhelmed by Galaxy. It's not that I think it's a bad game, by any means. It just doesn't grab me right now. I'm much more apt to take Z&W or GH off the shelf than Galaxy and I don't know quite why.

I think part of the reason is the level design. Rather than the expansive Mario 64 layouts, for example, the smaller individual planetoids that you're constantly hopping to tends to leave me wanting something more grandiose ... maybe. I'm not sure.

I do like it, but I feel like I'm missing something. Something is just not clicking with me. What am I doing wrong? Do I just need to give it more time? I've got around 10-12 stars so far. Help!

:)

You need to give it more time. Some of the levels later on are huge and expansive.

I agree. After the first dome, the levels get to be a lot more involved and less planetoid (although there are a few).

Agreed. You do need to give it more time.

After reading "eschewed Fire Emblem in the process", I almost shed a tear.

...Not really, but you should've bought FE instead of Guitar Hero.

OK... yeah. You need to give it some time. I felt very much underwhelmed with the game after playing the first level... I said, "Wow, Miyamoto, thanks for driving Mario into the ground".

Honeyhive Galaxy, and the ones after, changed my mind completely.

It also gets HARD! Some of the later levels kicked my butt like the purple coin ones and the trial galaxies.

Y'know, in all honesty, its a good game...but it isn't as great as people say in my eyes. Like, after I got 60 stars, nothing urged me to keep playing for the rest...not sure why.

But you do, I guess, have to give it a little time...

Yeah, like what pretty much everyone else said, you need to give it more time, I got pretty addicted to it at the honeyhive galaxy like Bul, and now I have all 120 stars.

Heh, well I will be picking up FE at some point as I love the series. Though I much prefer the GBA games to the PoR--though I haven't finished that one in all fairness. So no worries Bul, FE is a must-have in my opinion ... just not yet. Once I finish PoR or if for some odd reason there's a big price drop on RD.

I actually had Z&W, Battalion Wars II and Fire Emblem in-hand until I spotted the Guitar Hero box and then asked if they had any copies of Galaxy left. Otherwise it would have been a much different purchase. A plus for me on GH is that I can get my wife to play it which is a huge bonus for me as that rarely happens so that was a definite. As I said, though, FE will be in my collection at some point. Besides there's always a Christmas gift and my birthday is in January ...

:)

Back to Galaxy:
No worries there either I'm definitely not giving up on the game. Just wanted to give my initial impressions of it. I think the graphics and the sound are really impressive and I do enjoy Mario platformers so I imagine I'll like this, too. I was just beginning to get nervous about it.

Well if you do find you hate it I'll take it off your hands for ya.

I understand your interest in getting GH so your wifey will play. Funny thing is, my wife actually wanted to play Galaxy the other night...and enjoyed it. Her whole problem with games has been that she doesn't like the 3D roaming stuff, but she saw me playing it and really wanted to try. So that's good for me. I know that if I get GH, she'll play it. She loves games like DDR and such, so that one should be a no brainer.

Nice, that's very cool. Yeah my wife doesn't usually care for the 3d free roamers either. She played Mario 64 a while back and had a tough time getting Mario to go straight so she got a little frustrated. We did, however, take those three games over to a friends house the other day and she and another woman played Galaxy 2p for a short while and that seemed to go relatively smoothly. We also all played Z&W (4 of us all calling out ideas) and everyone enjoyed that. Guitar Hero was great for that crowd, too (my wife included).

She definitely wouldn't go for anything like FE as she thought the intro to Galaxy was too long and drawn out ...
