Gra-ah-ah! This is BOWSA 'eah!
I've been playing Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions a lot lately. This will be my first time completing this version of the game, but I've played the Playstation version loads of times. One thing that has never varied over time is my hatred for this guy:
Mindflayers (or Mindflares in the original PS version) are definitely in contention for one of my most disliked video game enemies due largely to their Mind Blast attack, a relatively large AOE that inflicts confusion and berserk. Confusion isn't too terribly bad to deal with (although certainly annoying), but berserk can only be cured by three abilities, one of which is learned only by an optional character you can recruit only during the final chapter of the game. There are items that protect against these status effects, but said accessories tend be somewhat niche and/or difficult to acquire. Additionally, if you like to use monster units in battle (like I do), there's really nothing they can do to be protected against these status effects.
One map in particular, Balius Swale (especially random battles instigated from the South entrance) often features multiple mindflayers and a tricky bottleneck that makes it difficult to reach and defeat the monster before it manages to Mind Blast one (or more) of your own units, plus a large tree in the way that makes sniping it from a distance difficult as well. Zeirchelle Falls is another map with random encounters made much more difficult due to often including mindflayers. And they can also show up in Midlight's Deep dungeons as well, as if they weren't difficult enough.
I feel like I can tell when my party is in good shape when I can manage to defeat an enemy loadout that includes multiple mindflares. Even if other monsters could arguably be more problematic (like Red Chocobos), seeing those red robes never fails to make me see red myself...
As for everyone else, are there particular mooks or monsters (specifically not bosses!) that you tend to dislike in games?
