So I saw in one of the videos that you don?t give your island a name until after some gameplay, much like the tree ceremony in NL I?m guessing.

I actually really like this feature because I?ve had a handful of names I can?t decide between, so I feel like playing the game for a little bit might help me to decide which best fits the island! And the campfire ceremony with the Nooks and your first villagers seems like such a warming event

What do you guys think about this feature?

I'd rather not be locked to the starting area with the tutorial, because I'd really like to see the entire island that I might settle down in for years to come. What if we go through this drawn out process, get to the point where we craft a vaulting pole, and Nook 'allows us' to explore the place, and it's not what we want.

That could be hours, days?

I don't mind waiting to name the place.
I'd just like a better look at the place I'm naming first. :)

You can see the entire layout on the map. Not to mention anything you don't like you just landscape to your exact desires later.

I like the naming ceremony, it gives us more attachment to the island.

Looking at a map gives me no clue as to what the place looks like.

I'd rather walk around and see for myself, plus I don't want to terraform much.

i actually really like it! i don't think seeing the island will make me personally change my island name, but i can imagine that for people that want to name their island something specific, like after their native fruit, this is awesome! and it makes sense too that there's no name right away since you're arriving on a "deserted island"

I get exactly what you’re saying! Yes I’m hoping there’s time to venture at least a bit before the ceremony... I’m guessing there is considering that the ceremony seems to be at night! But I doubt I will not like an island if I truly like the map/fruit/villagers.
But seeing the place and experiencing it before we name it would be helpful!

I’ve been set on a name since last spring, but I still agree that the naming will seem more meaningful after having seen the Island in person!

Like others have said, it could also help some people decide between names, or even be inspired for a name in the first place.

i think the naming ceremony is a nice addition- certainly adds to the whole ‘deserted island’ idea lol

Soooo, I had all these cool ideas for a village name, until!
I stumbled across a super dated post of mine and got a major hit of nostalgia :lemon:

And in from of my pics I remembered that my first town was named Oakwood, which admittedly isn’t as cool as my new names but now I really wanna name my new island in remembrance of my long lost one (‘:

torn

*update* ~ found the perfect town name after much thought... super excited now :)

I don't really care either way because I have to find the right name beforehand to stick with it, but I think the naming ceremony itself is very cute. I hope there are more community events.

I think it ties in nicely with the deserted island becoming inhabited premise! Plus as others said I think I'll only know from the shortlist of names I have which is best going to fit once I've walked around a little and experienced the atmosphere of the game properly. It's so different from the usual coastal town setting I'm not sure I'll feel the same way as previous games.

I've seen them jump over the river at very narrow points, so maybe that will be an option right away. And surely there's at least one built-in ramp to the upper levels. I agree that it would frustrating not to be able to walk through the whole island right away.

I do love the naming ceremony. :)
