Yes exactly as a title says; the ESRB rating for New Horizon's states the game will have In-Game Purchases. Now before we all jump the ship and cry wolf about it, it's likely just DLC:

What are your thoughts on this?

I don’t mind DLC if the content is worth it and they don’t release it regularly. I would pay for it a few times a year. But I don’t want them to go the pocket camp way where you have to pay for all the beautiful furniture/items if you want complete sets.

I’m not worried about it. I would prefer if it was just one big expansion pack maybe a tear down the line to keep people playing. Maybe it’ll include a bunch of new furniture, clothes, villagers, and new island you can access for some kind of event.

Another possibility I’m not too keen on is the idea of different “packages”. Kind of like the fortune cookie sets in PC, you can just buy a full set without the whole gambling aspect of PC.

PC has a toooonnnnnn of rare items and I doubt they’ll just transfer them all to NH free of charge.

But I don’t want paid DLC either. Considering how it’s been five painful years of going through all these Animal Crossing cash grabs, a complete game with no strings attached was the least they could do. :(

My opinion largely depends on how complete the overall base game feels. If the DLC is required to make the game competitive with New Leaf's base game in terms of catalog size, my opinion on any DLC will overall be negative. I find it mildly concerning that it is launching with this statement, as it worries me that DLC is part of a longer-term plan with the game. I have no real issue with DLC if it adds enough content, and my overall opinion will be positive if the base game itself is reasonably competitive with New Leaf for catalog size.

Given that this is a full-priced game and not a budget title like New Leaf was (given it was a 3DS game), it will be pitiful if the base game does not deliver content on par with New Leaf prior to Welcome Amiibo.

I don't mind DLC. I mind micro transactions, but idk I dont think Nintendo will do that.

I generally dislike the trend towards DLC, and I’m even less fond of it when games are clearly designed with DLC in mind. I don’t like the fact that my purchase no longer constitutes a complete package, and as a physical game buyer, I worry about what that will mean for games long-term, particularly once servers go down.

As for the AC-specific DLC, it will depend on what the content is. If it ends up being micro transactions, I’ll most likely avoid it. If it’s a season pass that adds significant content, there’s a good chance I’ll cave and buy it. I’m not surprised to see DLC, given that that unfortunately seems to be Nintendo’s business model going forward. I just hope they haven’t cut lots of content from the game specifically to put it in the DLC.

DLC ≠ micro transactions. For example, Fire Emblem Three Houses Season Pass extensions would qualify as in-game purchase. And, that is worthwhile. I do not think Nintendo will sell micro transaction content with their 80$ full-game. If they ever do that, the backlash will be phenomenal.

In-game purchases for cosmetic items would be suicide for Nintendo. Animal Crossing's reputation would plummet.

Rare in PC and rare in a main game are vastly different.

Exactly. The fact that PC is fueled by microtransactions, a lot of the event items and themed fortune cookie sets created from that revenue, will most likely not be part of NH base game. So they?ll either be unattainable in NH or they?ll end up selling them in DLC packs.

This kinda sucks.
It sounds like a mobile game we know.

They finally are doing it.
I didn't sign up for microtransactions.
Neither did a lot of other AC fans.

Thanks for the heads up on that warning.

I paid for a full game. Not one I have to keep paying for.

I'm fine with it so long that Nintendo approaches it the way they've done their other Switch games.

I don't want to see furniture/clothing packs or sold ? la carte. Keep that garbage in The Sims please! Instead, if they do big content packs (kind of like Sword/Shield) much later after release which includes new gameplay along with furniture, clothing, etc., that'd be far better, and I'd definitely support it.

I was actually contemplating this the other day. I think there would be great value in yearly 'season passes'/expansion packs that expand the content with new festivals, bugs, villagers, islands to visit, shops, etc. So every year in the game can feel different and fresh.

But anything more frequent than that might make Animal Crossing feel not like Animal Crossing.

Or they'll be available in the base game because they're different games.

Just because it says it has it doesn't mean it's going to. Please calm down.

I am calm.
It's just sad that greed won out.

I was really, really looking forward to NH. I've been playing AC for 15 years.

There's a lot I'd like to say, but I won't.

You said greed, I say "what corporations have to do".

This isn't going to destroy the game.

In-game purchases are entirely optional, so I'm not concerned.
