Witness... Wii.

"Introducing... Wii.
As in 'we.'
While the codename Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down that wall that seperates gamers from everyone else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking
What does Wii mean, anyway?
Wii sounds like 'we', meaning the console is for everyone."

Witness the future of gaming. This will be an informational/discussion topic, and I want to see CRITICISM, not flaming! This rule will be STRICTLY enforced, and whoever breaks it will get a one day ban, or more, depending on the offense.

Okay, first of all, I'd like to tell you all that the name will not be changed no matter what. Perry Kaplan seems to be rather sure of that, saying that nay-sayers should "sleep with it, live with it, and eat with it." Nonetheless, a lot of us still hate the name. But this is because we haven't yet understood it and its numerous meanings!

Here are the numerous meanings for it -

1) Wii, as in 'we', symbolizes that gamers, non-gamers, and casuals can all enjoy it.
2) The double 'i's in Wii symbolize two people playing the system, or two controllers.
3) Wii can also mean 'wee', which means small. The Wii is Nintendo's smallest home-console yet.

And I'm sure there are others.

Guys, this name may sound crappy, but in reality, it's short, simple, and genious. Really, the marketing technique could be awesome...

"It's not about you, or me. It's about Wii."
"Wii will rock you."
"Wii will change everything."

And tons of others! This is only the beginning, and you'll see how great advertising campaigns will flow (absolutely no pun intended) from Nintendo. And since the name has a, err, bit of a comical ring to it, it is memorable with everyone, gamers and non-gamers alike!

I get the meanings, yet I still don't like it. I won't post anymore, I may get banned.

You won't get banned if you don't flame. You can express your disappointment, of course, but not in a rude manner.

Thanks. I hate the name Wii for multiple reasons. I wouldn't say I didn't like it if I didn't have some decent reasons.

-Yeah, it sounds like "wee wee" Wii
-I was just getting used to the name Revolution
-There can be no abbreviations for Wii. Or is there? NW?
-Wii isn't even a word or combinations of words
-It sounds stupid to go say "Who else wantsa Wii?" compared to "Who wantsa Revolution"
-It's just another thing for non-Nintnedo guys to mock-"Wii is for Wieners" and whatnot.

That is exactly what I was saying.
i'm just not certian it can call to a new crowd...

1) Those jokes will start getting old in around a couple of days.

;)
2) Yeah, all of us were used to it, but we'll get used to Wii, too. I already am. <3
3) That's the beauty of it. It's not Nintendo Wii. It's just Wii. No abbreviations.
4) The more bizarre the name, the catchier it is. If it's short, then it's even better, like here.
5) That's because you're not used to it yet.
6) Believe it or not, the Sony and Microsoft people are laughing at us because we can't accept the name; in a recent poll, 80% of people that are getting a 360 or PS3 will be getting a Wii as their second system.

I still can't get used to the name Wii for some reason... I really think it's because I got so attatched to the name Revolution. I guess we'll here more about th "Wii" at E3 though

^_^

Yeah, the jokes are old. I know this is all in opinion, but, Wii sounds strange to me, after hearing "Rev" for so long. I might get used to it after a while. I don't think it'll ever sound as nice as Revolution, as in the Revolution of gaming. That's just me.

To Odd and Kevin: I"M NOT LEAVING TBT BECAUSE OF A STUPID NAME OR AN ARGUMENT OVER THE AFOREMENTIONED NAME

1-jokes do go away but doesn't change somepeople who will continue it only when something else bad is found in the system.
2-even if I get used to this I still like revolution better, after all i thought of some cool slogans for it, rev it up, one revolution equals 360(degree sign...don't know how tomake it), and I still love the quote "you want a revolution?"
3-that is another reason why I hate it now, it is still Nintendo, in fact moreso than all the past systems combined...I wonder why? oh that's right virtual consel.
4-bizarre names aren't always catchy...sometimes they are just...bizarre >_>'
5- still doesn't sound like something I want to be saying in the future.
6- The name doesn't change the system any farther than its advertising, what about the market Nintendo wants to attract, those not on the internet seaching for polls on the latest systems.

1) I can think of a funny way to call the Xbox 360, and the PS3, but why should I? Each system can be made fun of equally, but Ninetndo fanboys seem to care more than others.
2) There can be tons of (better) slogans using Wii.
3) Uhh, so what if it doesn't have Nintendo in the name? It's still a Nintendo system. :\
4) It's already catchy. The negative advertisment is already working, and the positive ads will be on TV soon.

;)
5) Why? 'Cause you're embarrased to say it in front of your friends? Will they, possibly, think you're not 'cool'? Ah, peer pressure. Something I won't have to experience.

:p
6) This name is perfect for all of the markets, you'll see.

to the 5th one not so much peer pressure as I just don't wanna say it.
no more than i would want to name the ipods name if its name was say "tiny"
yeah I was just listening to my tiny....just sounds odd.

I'm sorry Bul, but I just don't like the name. It's just so hard to get used to. I shouldn't have gotten so attached to the name 'Revolution' because I knew it was just a codename. Well, i guess I'm just going to have to get used to it.

But one thing before I leave:

system > systems name

(lol, same thing I posted at Nsider)

yep that stays true, the system should still rock.

I think i just like names with action in it. my favorite consel name ever was probably sega Genisis, begining simply awesome, I also liked Dreamcasts name, so yeah

I told the name to everyone I know. No one likes it. In fact, we all joke at each other "Wanna play my Wii?" whenever we see each other. I think this is just a mockary to the Nintendo name. I hate it!

I talked to my friends about it. They thought is was a good move.

No one really knows what direction Nintendo is heading, all these surprises might be random but I belive Nintendo knows what it is doing.

I have to admit, I didnt like the name before. I was really hoping for the "Nintendo REVOLUTION", and not the "Nintendo Wii". But you know what? After watching that video 16 more times, I think I like the name now. Yeah...Nintendo Wii. Sure. Thats actually pretty fun...

Are we starting where you HAVE to make all your posts about Wii (new rev name) in here? Because, at Nsider it's stupid. ;). What they did with the official thread.

anyways, back on topic

I'm starting to like this name, well, accept the name

:p

Hey, look at this: http://www.games.net/features/109067.shtml

1. Gizmondo - "There's no denying that this name just sucks."
2. 3DO Interactive Multiplayer - "Stereo. Video. And 3DO. Bombed hard"
3. ColecoVision - "Great system. Terrible name"
4. Virtual Boy - "it sounds like a euphemism for an imaginary friend"
5. Xbox 360 - "utterly meaningless"
6. N-Gage - "Definitely a god-awful console name"
7. CDi - "bland, lifeless, and forgettable, just like the console"
8. GameCube - "much too generic to really convey anything at all"
9. Dreamcast - " overambitious, high-concept brand an undergraduate marketing major would conjure up"
10. Nintendo Wii - "an uncharacteristically risky choice, even for Nintendo"
