So I was just playing Skyrim on my Nintendo Switch, when all of a sudden, the game closed, and a message popped up saying something like "Game closed due to software error." The worst part is that this is not the first time it happens with this game. This has happened three times before, so I went to EB Games with the warranty to get a new one, thinking it was the cartridge, but I guess I was wrong. I'm at Level 53 in the game, so I put quite a few hours into it. However, I have 85 hours put into Mario Odyssey and 50 hours into Splatoon 2 and not once have I had this issue with either of them.

So I just want to know, has anyone ever experienced something like this? Could it be my Nintendo Switch? I would appreciate any kind of help :) Thank you.

The same thing has happened to me 2 or 3 times playing skyrim but I haven't had any issues with any other game. Not sure what's going on but you're not alone haha

Game crashes happen fairly often with the Switch sadly. The biggest offender I believe is Fire Emblem Warriors, plenty of others have had crashes with that game, and I've had about 10 or more myself (I've lost count at this point tbh). But pretty much any game can crash and I don't think it has anything to do with your Switch; I feel like it's a problem that could happen to anyone with any game and it's just dependent on what game you are playing at the moment that can make a crash occur more often.
Other than FE Warriors, I've had Xenoblade Chronicles 2 crash on me once, but that was when the game first released and it never happened again, so maybe a patch helped out there. Mario Odyssey and Splat 2 are pretty stable and don't demand as much from the system as the other 2 games I've listed or Skyrim, so you should be mostly fine for those games.

That happened to me once or twice when I was playing Doom online then another when I was playing Mario + Rabbids (on a different Switch unit). I don't think it's something to worry about though unless your Switch isn't turning on. Also, I heard there are glitches/bugs in Skyrim that still needs to get patched.

All right, thank you so much! I was just a little nervous because I literally got a brand new copy for this very issue and now I was having doubts. But as long as it is something that is somewhat normal, I guess I should not worry :) Thank you!

Yeah, my Switch always starts up, works great online, and all that jazz. I have never had an issue with it until Skyrim. I noticed though that it is only once I have invested a lot of time into one character that it will start too act up. It is not even that frequent; I just read that some people had problems on start-up, which is something I have luckily avoided. And yeah, I did have that suspicion, since apparently consoles (and even PCs, if you do not get Mod Patches) have similar issues, so I guess I should take it with a grain of salt. Anyway, thank you!

Okay well it is nice to hear that I'm not the only one. I'm guessing it's just Bethesda and their lack for patching their buggy games.

I've noticed that it's most likely to happen on third party software. I'm not into technical stuff (lol) but it's probably the way they ported it and obviously, they wouldn't be as perfect when compared to the ones developed by Nintendo. I got Doom pre-patch and omg, I remember it having tons of sound bugs like the music going off in the middle and that loud buzzing sound that scares the s*** out of me haha. It took two months before they finally patched it. They really took their time lol. The game was ported by Panic Button but was published by Bethesda so they still needed permission from them before they do something. But okay a while back when I was still searching for the fix, I've came across complaints regarding Skyrim having the same issues, errors and all. Hopefully it gets patched really soon. I know that feeling when you couldn't enjoy the game at the fullest. Ahh Bethesda and their buggy games. There is no problem with your Switch. I can assure you that.

Oh my gosh, yes, I could vouch that Skyrim has very similar problems to pre-patch Doom. Weird random static noises, audio out of sync, I've heard it all. I always knew Skyrim was buggy, but it was the fact that my Switch is only three months old that caused me to worry for the worst. Honestly, I'll just put the autosave feature to every 5 minutes to avoid having to constantly save. And hearing you say that my Switch is most likely not the cause is very reassuring, so thank you for that.

Although, I know for a fact there won't be a patch; this has been going on since its original release in 2011.
