Notre dame in Paris has burned down

Just seen this now, I hope there wasn't anyone hurt.

Man, this is actually a tragedy. It's really a lot bigger of a deal than it feels like, that's a thousand years of cultural, religious and artistic history up in smoke. Hopefully they'll be able to restore/rebuild it at least. The white house was rebuilt when it was burnt down, after all. And also, thank goodness there were no casualties (at least that I'm aware of).

Love and Prayers to France. Thankfully the fire started after if closed to the public soo no one was inside aside from the construction people. Hopefully they were able to save the artwork from inside...that stuff is like National treasures....the building itself too for that matter. Such a sad sight to see indeed.

I feel absolutely devastated. It was such an iconic building to me and I will never get to look at it the same again. I can't explain how my heart just,,, aches right now.

This truly is a tragic loss of human history! :/ They can try to restore certain things, but some things will never be the same or will be impossible to replace (like the stained glass which was made using a special technique that died with the creator of it)... Thank you Lord no one was inside or near the fire when it started!

This is a shocking tragedy. Such a great accumulation of art and history is lost to us today. Hopefully they could rebuild it, but it’s still sad to see this happen. Sending my thoughts, love, and prayers to France right now. :(

i'm shocked and heartbroken that we lost such a historically rich and beautiful building, but to look on the bright side, there were no casualties, all artifacts were saved, and the president has promised to at least rebuild it... still sending all my love to france rn though :(

This is so depressing... This building has always meant so much to history. I'm just glad no lives were lost though AFAIK.

that is twistedly ironic, if so

it really just goes to show how much easier it is to destroy something than create and preserve it
There is also political speculation of course. A number of churches have been desecrated lately, as well as it possibly serving as a distraction from the yellow vest protest. That is all I'm going to say on that.

Although I really hope this is an accident it’s coincidental that this happens on Holy Week. Just saying

This is so sad. I love old architecture and I actually just read The Hunchback of Notre Dame not too long, which focuses so much on the building itself. I am glad that no one was hurt, but it's a sad day indeed.

but almost the entire building is ok and they can just rebuild the spire and whatnot.
