Obscure Observations (Crews 1 & 2)

writing is usually my strong suite, but i don't like first-person asdfghjkl.
hope this fits the prompt!

objective: collect stardust.

i have no clue what our expedition leaders want it for, let alone so much. maybe they want to study its properties, or perhaps it just has high value on the interstellar market? all i know is that the team who rakes in the most will be rewarded favorably for their efforts. so, i take to the surface of the planet we're currently on and begin searching the strange wilds for pockets of stardust.

a field of oddly-shaped flowers — the best word i have for them — soon proves to be a literal goldmine, their rubber-like petals shimmering with what i need, and i quickly crouch down to start brushing their dust into the small sack i was issued. it’s a slow and painstaking task. a dust-buster or something similar would probably speed things up, but at the risk of damaging this planet’s ecosystem, it's better i do things manually, gradually moving from plant to plant.

i must be on only my fifth, gloved fingertips sparkling slightly from my hard-work, when the flowers in front of me start to jostle, and just as i look up, something abruptly pokes out from beneath the undergrowth, making me jump. it almost looks like an earthen axolotl but not quite, a star-shaped mark imprinted on its forehead, and while it’s cute, with a friendly face, i know looks can be deceiving. who’s to say it can’t transform into some galactic eldritch horror, to punish me for farming stardust or simply being in its territory?

“uh. hello,” i try, but if the little creature, no bigger than a bearded dragon, understands me, it doesn’t react, and i'm left to stare anxiously into its eyes for several seconds before they close. suddenly, the star on its forehead starts to shine golden, and i don't know if that's a bad or good thing, mesmerized by its light until i notice the stardust all around me slowly rising up. it brightens the air with an enchanting glow, as if i were being surrounded by fireflies, and i look on in awe as the stardust dances towards me, swirling and shimmering its way into the still-open sack i have for collecting it.

it steadily fills more and more, until the contents are almost tumbling over the edge, and the remaining dust stills, hanging in the atmosphere for a moment longer before starting to float towards the ground. i watch until it settles, then look back towards the creature that had joined me, its wide eyes gazing up into mine again. “thank you?” i say, still not sure if it can decipher my words, and it blinks once, as if to wordlessly answer you’re welcome, then leaves just as suddenly as it arrived, disappearing under the flora’s cover, the petals rustling as it scurries away. in its absence, i glance down at my new surplus of stardust, shining even through the thick fabric.

... nobody’s going to believe how i got this.

Here's my entry!

Dear mom,

Just 10 centimeters. There is just 10 centimeters that currently separate us from the unforgivably cold grip of the infinite void. But I'm the only one freaking out about it? Okay, yeah, I guess we'll all just go on about our daily arts and crafts while our (let's be honest here) drunkard captain is no where to be found? Plus we keep receiving these barely audible, unsettling transmissions. There's something crazy going on out there, and these counselors don't even bat an eye! I brought it up with counselor Kaiaa and she just handed me a worksheet to fill out, like is this a joke? Our captain could be in another dimension by now and we're sitting here doing crosswords! Oh, and don't even get me started on what they think constitutes an "all inclusive" common room, did they expect us to furnish the whole thing by ourselves? All they have in there is a couple of dusty old space magazines from the 80's, and a broken karaoke machine that, get this, doesn't have a single K.K. slider song on it. They really cheaped out that much, I wasn't even aware there were other musicians! I don't know how I'll make it to end of camp... Actually, nevermind, can you come get me?

Please? I know it's a long drive, but I just wanna go home,
Roxie
jk,this is fiction, you know I love it here. 💚

Here's my entry! I hope it fits the criteria! Sorry if there's any grammar errors btw english isn't my mother tongue lol, hope you guys can still enjoy though!

After a few days spent acclimating with my new setting, I finally decided to explore the surroundings of my cabin.

I remember stumbling upon what seemed like a library full of sleek looking bookcases.
Everything looked normal except for one thing: there was not a single book to be seen anywhere.

Curious, I decided to search around the room to try and understand its purpose.
After looking around for what seemed like an eternity I found a single book standing straight on a bookcase.
It was a blue book with golden symbols on the cover.

I picked it up and all of a sudden the furniture around me started disappearing one by one, soon followed by the flooring.
I began running to try and avoid the emptiness of space slowly revealing itself under my feet.

No matter where I was looking, I couldn’t seem to find a single place that looked familiar.
I decided to surrender because of how absurd the situation had gotten already.

The tile I was standing on finally disappeared and there I was, floating in outer space, surrounded by silence and coldness.
I looked around me and The Lopez had vanished.
Trying to collect myself I couldn’t help but to start panicking and losing some precious oxygen.

“Wait! I’m not done.”

I heard a slight vacuuming sound and a deep suction feeling on my forehead.

“Just a little bit more, hang in there.”

The suction’s force amplified and after a last powerful draw, I was free.

“Sorry for the inconvenience, I just couldn’t leave you in that state, dear.”

I turned my head and saw a familiar silhouette going by the bed I was on.

It was Luna.

“What’s happening?” I asked, puzzled.

“You came here for a deep tissue massage as your Captain suggested so as to stay in shape. But after a few minutes you fell asleep, you must be exhausted, poor thing.”

“I… No, I’m okay, don’t worry!” I replied, not quite feeling entirely like myself.

“...You seem moved by what just happened. I’m here if you need, alright dear?”

“S-Sure!” I said, trying to stand up from the bed.

After a few attempts I got up and looked around me.
Suddenly, my eyes glanced over Luna’s desk only to find a blue book with golden symbols on it.

“What’s the matter dear? Are you okay?” Luna said while tidying up the bed I was sleeping on just a few minutes ago.

“This book…”

“Oh dearie don’t you dare touch it.” Luna said coldly.

“But I need to know what’s inside, I… I need to!” I answered daringly.

“You certainly don’t. Nobody here does.” she replied, approaching me.

“Leave. It. Alone.” she added, menacingly.

A-Actually, Nevermind! It’s totally fine, b-bye!” I said, struggling with the door handle in my back in a panic.

I finally managed to leave her room and rushed to my cabin.
I was sweating and tears were rolling down my cheeks.

“When did Luna even board The Lopez?”

Haaaaa!!! Not a chance! He pooped on me!!!! Also, @BetsySundrop I hope you do not mind that Gulliver was involved in my story as well, but I was already almost done writing it when you had posted. I’m so sorry!!!

Are you kidding? I'm ecstatic that it's not just me! The more the merrier (well....merrier for everyone except that bird).😂

Yours is awesome btw. From the very first, you can hear it in your head.

I'm very much not used to writing in first person, but here you go!

Oh no. I've become separated from the crew again.

Now, I know we were traversing across this colourful planet to find.... Something. A shopping cart? Was that it? I can't remember. I got distracted by a seagull in a space helmet being chased by someone from one of the other teams. I'm sure I know his name, but it escapes me.

Well, I suppose I could always just keep moving in one direction. I think there's a boulder that I can see from here, I'm sure we passed it. Actually, nevermind. Just remembered that it was our crew's rolling cart stuffed to the brim with supplies that I saw earlier, not a boulder.

In the meantime, I'll update my findings on the laptop. We've seen some strange moss, glowing mystical trees with peculiar pods attached (which I may or may not have stolen seeds from - when I get home, I'm bartering with Phoebe, she loves these things), some golden fungi-looking thing, and I'm pretty sure we came across an alien. It may have also been one of the crew playing dress up back in the quarters, but I'm logging that as an alien sighting regardless. There's a strange scent to this planet, and I'm positive that's what's making me somewhat drowsy.

Ah! At last, there they are, in the distance, treading on the pastel blue sand. Or at least, I think that's them. It's a group of people wearing green. I'm glad they came back for me.

Oh no, wait, the boulder was in fact our rolling cart with supplies. That's what they returned for. I'm gonna wrap this up and catch up with them before they leave me behind for good.

Ta-ta, strange planet. Cheers for the seeds.

So basically, a couple of weeks ago, I'd already written a couple of pieces of short stories before I even knew this was a thing, and they already fit all of these requirements, but because of the "brand-new piece of writing for this event" part, is it alright if I, to take a bit of time on thinking up something completely new off of my shoulders, make a part three to my ongoing "My Experience at Space Camp" series over in the museum, and post it here as my submission? If not, that's probably fine, I could just think of something new :>

Hi there! Unfortunately, it should not be a continuation. It does need to be an entirely new piece of writing.

Thank you!

My Space Camp Observations

Today is Wednesday - more than ten days since my crew members and I went to space camp. I didn't know what I signed up for,
had I known...
It's scary here away from home in the dark void, only faint stars are glimmering in the distance, there's also some square shaped object on our radar that seems to follow us. We are carefully observing.

Every other day, our spaceship receives random messages from Gulliver that we have to decrypt, and we get to do many tasks that keep us on our toes. But my crew members are really the best, we stand together, we work hard, play hard and no one is left alone. Teamwork makes the dream work, and the meme c;
We help each other as much as we can, and I feel like everything is possible!

This week, during a mission we collected so much stardust only to be defeated by a merciless, yet worthy opponent. We lost out on a special price for our crew, but we didn't lose our team pride! It was fun and we went all in.

A few days ago we almost crashed into a planet that looked like Saturn, but we couldn't find out what it was, and it didn't appear on our onboard sensors...
All alerts went up when the planet came into sight, it was crazy, we feared for our lives.
Thankfully our amazing crew managed to avoid the collision and we got through it safely!

Entries up to this point have been accepted! It's fun to see all the different ideas/takes on the task.

(though where did the hostility for Gulliver come from? 😂)

I'd also like to take a moment to mention my activity will be mostly non-existent for August 4-5. If you have any questions about the event, please send me a PM so I receive an email notification for it, and I'll try to reply as soon as I can. 🙏

An Unusual Journal (Translated)
Day 1
I have successfully infiltrated the human's ship, referred to as 'The Lopez'. There appears to be a surplus of excitement and camaraderie, as they prepare for an event they call 'Space Camp'. They have been split into 4 factions, with each sect occupying a different area of the station. I have assimilated myself into what is known as 'Crew 1'. My group has been tasked with choosing a team color. As not to draw attention to myself, I did not suggest anything, but merely nodded approvingly when someone made a suggestion. One of my crew mates suggested an 'ice breaker', but I saw no ice, or breaking of said ice, anywhere in the vicinity.

Day 2
There is much talk within the quarters about cookies, or more specifically 'space cookies'. Who had them, who wanted them, who was going to steal them. I began to become paranoid and increasingly uneasy until I realized that cookies are a treat that humans consume. They were talking about sustenance all along, and not referring to my ship, The Space Cookie, which is known throughout the galaxy.

Day 3
I was presented with two tasks to accomplish, both unusual by my standards. I was taken aback when I was informed we were hunting for alien eggs at one point. What does an alien egg look like to these humans? Regardless, I found none, but I did find a comfortable spot on the sofa.
Secondly, we had to look at what appeared to be a specimen bottle filled with 'star frag candy'. I can't believe this group of people has the constitution to devour bits of stars! They may be more durable than we initially thought.

Day 4
We are no longer known as 'Crew 1', and now collectively go by the name Galaxolotls. I believe this is a human portmanteau, blending the words 'galaxy' and 'axolotl' together. These humans are so clever!
I become a bit homesick when I am shown what an axolotl actually looks like. Reminds me of aunty Gert back home...

Day 5
Today we are gazing at the stars...a cosmic canvas really. The campers are all sketching and naming celestial bodies that I have never heard of in all my 400 decades. Some appear to be harmless, and some appear to be terrifying. What imaginations this group has!

Day 6
A heated battle is on the horizon, I'm told we're going to war. I sneak away and grab my gear and my blaster. By my understanding we are battling against another of the factions, the 'Actually, Neverminds', for the right to possess a passing Wishing Star. I wasn't even aware wishing stars soared through this sector. Upon returning to the common area, I overhear that this is a 'figurative' war and 'all in good fun'. What a confusing species. I put the safety back on my blaster and return my gear to its hiding spot...slightly disappointed.

I will continue this log at a safer time. I'm being watched.

I had so much fun with this omg.
A new young group of astronauts specially hand-picked by NASA, the National Animals of Space Analysis, had recently boarded their new ship, the Star-ranger. This adventurous team consisted of Ione, their well-versed space captain; Cephalobot, their mechanical genius acquired to help with all forms of space maintenance: and Petri, the teams' biologist, with an incredible talent for learning about space life.

Cephalobot was practically coming unscrewed with excitement as he explored the interiors of this massive ship, his metal eyes sparkling as they came across all of the advanced technology, some of which he had never seen.

Slowly making their way through the ship, after touching everything they could get their hands on, they reached the observatory with its massive and expansive views of all the stars and constellations. As the others entered, Petri noticed movement out of the corner of her eye. As she turned, she spotted a small pink, purple, and blue-spiraled creature floating around in the lack of gravity.

"What..an axolotl? Here?" she mumbled under her breath, looking around in disbelief. Captian Ione seemed to catch her gaze from the corner of her eye. "Hm, well, this is certainly a surprise," Ione said through a light-hearted giggle.

It seemed very unbothered about the fact that it was continuously floating in the zero gravity of space; its big and empty eyes met with Petri's loving ones. She slowly extended her paws, and the galaxy-colored axolotl swam toward her and settled in her open palms.

Cephalobot scratched his head with his metal tentacles, puzzled. "How did it get here?" Captain Ione shrugged with a smile on her face " I dunno, but it seems the Galaxotols have found our mascot." she said, her smile turning into a huge grin.

Despite the mystery, the entire crew decided it would be best to let the axolotl stay. It soon became part of the crew and a cheerful, sweet presence to have with them in the enormous dark expanse of space. As they continued their mission through the universe, they discovered the most magical things weren't in the vast and distant galaxies but right there in the heart of their ship.

A Cadet's Return
l9JH5pi.gif

Frantic pacing, papers shuffling, calculations being drawn on a board only to be erased and redone.... The hub of the Lopez's Base of Operations was overfilling with electric energy. Cadet Gulliver, was set to return back to Earth. He had been on a space walk on the new glowing space mass that recently appeared in orbit. The mass itself hasn't made any noticeably major movements towards Earth, but after spending months tracking the mass, it was decided that a closer look was needed. Cadet Gulliver and his spacecraft were set to return to Earth after collecting specimens from the mass. His crewmates back at the Lopez were doing all they can to ensure his safe and speedy return.

"He's still gaining altitude, that's good he's still right on course." Flight Dynamics Officer Toby pointed on the screen he and Commander Digi were watching. Commander Digi kept a close eye on the monitor showing the spacecraft's trajectory. "Keep watch Toby, we have to bring Cadet Gulliver home safely."
"Commander Digi, you need to see this." Flight Activities Officer Puck called over to the monitor he was sitting out. "I've never seen something like this before. The radar is fully functional and even picking up space debris, but the spacecraft keeps blipping in and out on our radar."

Commander Digi kept watch as the spacecraft that Cadet Gulliver was in appeared and disappeared off the screen.

"Cadet Gulliver. This is Commander Digi do you copy?"

A few seconds passed before Commander Digi pressed the button again.
"Cadet Gulliver. Do you copy?"

".......................krsssht."

"Come in, Cadet Gulliver. Do you copy, over?"

"..Co-p- krrrshrrht.....................krsssht."

"There's too much interference, we can't hear anything through the static!" Suddenly, red flashing lights and sirens started to ring through out the room. "Uh, that can't be good." Flight Dynamics Officer Sasha mumbled under his breath. "Officer, now's not the time for jokes Cadet Gulliver is offline now for some reason. This shouldn't be happening, we need to get him back online!"

"Spacecraft Communicator Etoile can you get him back online?" Commander Digi asked as the sheep frantically pressed the keys on her keyboard. "Already on it, but it doesn't seem to be on our end!" The crew watched as the spacecraft disappeared completely off the radar. "Commander Digi, the telecommunications subsystem keeps shorting out. We can't get a clear enough read on Cadet Gulliver...but maybe if i connect the subsystem to the....." Etoile began trailing off before pressing more keys. The sirens and lights turned off as she typed and suddenly the spacecraft returned on the radar."

Commander Digi slowly pressed the communication button. The room was pin drop silent.
"Cadet Gulliver...... Do you copy, over?"
"Lo-kkrrrrsshht-pez....I krsssssht shhht.....I copy loud and clear."

The room let out a big deep sigh before before erupting into loud cheers.

"You had us really worried there for a minute, blipped off our radar. Over." Commander Digi sat back in relief.

"Let's get you home now, Cadet."

"Aye aye Commander. Copy that!

Here's my entry!

I left the space station and explored the planet today. I stepped off the ship into a field of seafoam green sand. A light breeze was picking up the sand and blowing it around. I collected some of the sand in one of my pouches and tucked it away to study once I was back on the ship. As I made my way across the sandy planet, I looked up at the two moons that hung low in the sky. One was a dusty rose color while the other shone like a giant pearl. I snapped a picture with my phone. Distracted by the moons, I took a step forward and, due to the fact that the planet's gravity was similar to that of Earth, found myself plummeting straight down into a crevice in the sand. Thankfully, my suit was equipped with an emergency jetpack, which had activated automatically in response to my fall, saving me from a potentially tragic fate. However, my curiousity had been piqued, so I took a moment to shine my flashlight around the crevice. The walls were smooth like glass and layered with many different colors, similar to the layers of rock one finds on Earth. I wish I could have grabbed a sample of them somehow, but my jetpack began to beep, warning me of the decreasing fuel level, so I quickly flew out of the crevice and back onto the sand.

After that scare, I continued my exploration with a bit more caution. The sand seemed to stretch on endlessly, but eventually I came across a frozen pond. The ice was lavender in color, and I chipped some of it off into a container and tucked it away next to the sand I'd collected earlier. On the other side of the pond there were a few plantlike things growing out of the sand. They were small, pure white, and had thin tendrils coming off of their main stems. I was tempted to pick one of the plants for study, but, not wanting to risk upsetting the planets ecosystem, I settled on taking just the smallest tendril from one of the plants. To my surprise, the inside of the plant turned out to be hollow. A hole was left where I'd plucked off the tendril, but then, right before my eyes, it closed up in a matter of seconds.

It was late by then, so I had to return to the station, but I can't wait to go to the lab tomorrow and perform some tests on the specimens I collected!

My silly story! Hope it's a fun read.

To the person who reads this:

My name is Soup and I am aboard a space ship called "The Lopez." With me are my fellow crew mates, the Galaxolotls. We have seen so much war, so much... dust... all around our quarters, the observatory, and even in the depths of the "basement." That's right, there seems to be a basement on this ship!

The uncanniness does not end there, dear person who is reading this: we have been subject to the whims of a certain seagull, one with a penchant of getting lost. I am hiding in the cargo hold as we speak — I feel that he is orchestrating something sinister, pitting our crew against other crews on this space ship in search of these things he calls "mission tokens."

He is now demanding items and to appease his requests, we have entered the west division in hopes of finding all he asks for. We have had to search for numerous things on this ship! Preposterous things like... shopping carts, barbecue grills, and even a slice of bread. Why would any of these things be on "The Lopez?" is what I thought before this seagull blew his whistle. And oh, dear person... what a fire it lit under my and my crew mates' behinds! We ran all around, dug through the boxes, screamed so loudly you could hear it from Earth. We found all these objects in the most decrepit, neglected of corners. In the most abandoned rooms.

We emerged with the seagull's items, but had disappeared yet again into the darkness. We are worried he may come for us again.

Please, if you read this letter: send us some reinforcements. We cannot escape the grasp of this seagull without your help. If you cannot come yourself, please keep an eye out for any straggling or missing Galaxolotls. We will need your watchful eyes. In fact, I may be able to feel your eyes watching over us already...

With utmost urgency,
Soup

I woke up one day thinking to myself, huh, today seems like a good day to go exploring. I walked outside.

What greeted me on the other side was something amazing! There were giant mushrooms, rivers filled with bells, and trees filled with fossils. It was like something out of a story book! I reached into the river, but a sudden voice stopped me.

"Hey, what are you doing with our bell harvest?!"

I looked up, confused, only to see a white seagull in blue clothing standing there. I pointed to myself with a perplexed look still on my face.

"Yeah, LANDLUBBER, WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO STEAL OUR BELLS?!?"

"Who says you have the right to this river?" I exclaimed confidently.

"We do!"

All of a sudden more of the birds started showing up, dressed in all manners of colors of the outfit the original one was wearing.

"AH!" I screamed as they began chasing me. I kept running, not wanting to be caught by the flock of alien birds.

"WE ARE THE GULLIVERS OF EXOTICO BELL PLANET, AND WE WON'T LET YOU GET AWAY!" They shouted, still chasing me.

I hid behind a rock, trying to catch my breath, and then darted into a nearby forest of fossil trees.

As I continued delving deeper into the mysterious forest, I started to hear a weird noise that sounded like a song that would play when your grandma is really upset with you. Finally, I arrived at a clearing.

"H-hello?"

At first there was no reaction, but then a brown-colored mole with a construction hat on and overalls popped out of the ground.

"Yes? I am the Resetti of Exotico Bell Planet. Who might you be?" He asked me.

"I'm Riley. What is this place?" I asked back.

"This is the Fossil Tree forest, home to the Resettis." Resetti said back to me. Just then, many more moles of different colors with construction hats on and overalls popped out of the ground.

What might you need help with?" They asked me.

"Well, there is one thing..." I said slyly.

A few moments later I walked back out of the Fossil Tree forest. The Gullivers marched to a hill above me.

"Ah, so come back to pay for your crime, huh?" The lead Gulliver asked.

"Not quite." I answered. "Resettis, assemble!"

The Gullivers gasped as many of the Resetti moles popped up beside me with shovels, axes, and all kinds of tools in their hands.

"GET THEM!!!" I shouted as all the Resettis and me charged towards the Gullivers. The Gullivers charged back until both sides met. One by one the Gullivers and Resettis would take each other out, whacking each other with all manner of tools. It was a battle... for the ages.

"Yeah, get them..." I said, not realizing I had been dreaming this entire time. I woke up to find myself still in the makeshift cabin on the far off planet.

"Huh, what a weird dream."

“Now, go! And don’t come back until you’ve gathered as much stardust as you can carry!”

With that final instruction, the spaceship door locked behind me, and I was alone, left standing on the terrain of an unfamiliar planet. Behind the locked door, I could faintly make out the sound of my crew captain’s footsteps, likely heading back to our common room.

All members of Crew 2 had been tasked with collecting stardust for our “almighty Lord Sasha”. We were told he possessed great powers, and that collecting stardust for him would further increase his strength. Sasha seemed to be something of a recluse, as he rarely left his room on the spaceship. I had never seen him, so I could neither confirm nor deny the rumours of his great powers. As a result, I felt no particular loyalty to him, though I dared not reveal this sentiment to anyone on the spaceship. My crew members all blindly worshipped him, and I did not want to risk being labelled as a traitor.

With no choice but to gather stardust for the adorable rabbit, I began to survey my surroundings. The terrain was surprisingly lush. Trees lined the horizon, and I could make out a lake in the distance. Despite the beautiful scenery, I did not spot anything in the immediate vicinity that might house stardust, so I decided to venture further into the unfamiliar planet.

After walking for a half hour or so, I spotted something that might be relevant to my quest. Orb-shaped stones were nestled between some trees. They were covered in moss, and seemed to radiate a mysterious power. I guessed that if I broke them apart, I might find some stardust contained within them.

I readied the shovel that I had brought with me. I was just about to strike, when I heard a voice cry out.

“Stop! Leave those stones alone!”

I brought my shovel to a halt, and turned my head in the direction of the voice. I saw a drowsy-looking seagull stumbling towards me.

“Sorry if I startled you, but please, stop. I’m collecting these stones. I need them for my terrarium project.”

I had no idea what he meant by a “terrarium project”, but it sounded infinitely more interesting than gathering stardust to power up a reclusive rabbit. I decided to offer the seagull my assistance.

“I don’t know what you’re doing, but do you need any help? I’ve got some time to kill, so let me collect these stones with you.”

The seagull’s drowsy expression immediately changed to one of joy. “Really?! You’ll help me with my terrarium project?!”

I nodded, returning the seagull’s smile with one of my own. I then stopped, mid nod, and the smile vanished from my face. What was I thinking?! I couldn’t abandon my task! I would be severely punished by one of the crew captains. Thinking about the possible consequences made me shudder.

I looked sadly at the expectant seagull. “Actually, nevermind.”
