you did the right thing . ive been a host before and with turnips that high, a lot of people will want to come. its stressful and time consuming. there's nothing wrong to ask for an entrance fee (which were all reasonable)
This.I disagree. I've had people come to my town before, and I don't like charging them. Turnips is just a way to make a profit, and most of us give tips that are way better than golden nuggets or gold furniture. :/ I don't have any of that, so it makes me sad that I can't go over to his town because of my disadvantage.

Disagree if you want....but its's HIS requirement. I am in the same boat as you, i dont charge a fee either, but having been a host before, i can tell you its time consuming. With prices that high, people will flock to him. There is nothing wrong with cutting out his demographic by only allowing people who may have something he wants. His wants aren't unreasonable either with the first. Sure, it may be tough to get some roses or gold nuggets, etc....but a 10% tip is more than reasonably acquired (in which he had no limit set). So even if you only profitted 100k, what is wrong with asking 10k? It isnt rude, period. Greedy? thats questionable. He took the time to host someone. I look at it like going to a restaurant with a party of 8 or more where gratuity is added.
Its a game people...and its his towna and he can do whatever he wants with it. If you dont like it, move on to the next person, but blantly calling someone rude like that.....is RUDE!
But what about the people who don't have any of the things you want? We get denied. I always tip, and I think a tip is much better than having some golden furniture. Nothing's wrong with asking for money, but everything is wrong when you ask for things most people simply do not have.
I'm not continuing this debate - it's wrong IMO, it's right to you, so whatever. But no one will want to come to a town that is that demanding.
I'm not sure why would anyone feel like the visitors are entitled to visit any host.
If the host demands an entrance fee, that within his bounds.
As a visitor, you should at least respect the host rules. If you can't offer anything, at least try to barter. Such as giving 10% of your turnips you're selling.
Sure, it is upsetting if you can't sell. You can complain about how everything should be free of charge, and how there shouldn't be a demand for an entrance fee. But at least realized it doesn't mean you were entitled to even visit in the first place.
Bottom line, the host gets the final say.
He can even decide not to even open or time travel back at all if he wanted to, and continue playing normally.
Hi!!! I would really love it if I could come I have 4 characters and I'll tip generously!I have turnips at 529. I do have a tip rule and other rules.
1. Tip 99K per trip. Sell, then drop before returning to your locker. Drop infront of train station please.
2. No running. Retail isn't far, no need to run
3. Go to retail and train station, nowhere else. Feel free to buy anything in retail.
4. Don't stop to talk to villagers, it just slows everything down.
5. Do not leave, I will end session when everyone is done.
I currently have groups on gamefaqs waiting, if you would like to come, i will add you to the group at the time of your post.

All in all, I see no reason to charge, but yes, it is within a Mayor's right to do so. But that doesn't change the fact that most people who do it are either rude and/or greedy, since there really is no legit reason for doing so in the first place. (and no, "but it's wasting my precious time" isn't an excuse - you're choosing to let visitors in. Don't want your time wasted? Then don't do it. Simple.)
Personally, I don't care whether or not people charge people - I just want nothing to do with people like that.
It's nice to get tipped by grateful people, but I never demand it. I also try to tip others for letting me visit their town so long as they accept it.

Do you tip your waitress for the time and effort they put in serving you? Or are they greedy for expecting you to tip them for their service?
You can't compare real life to a game.
