Old Hollywood Thread

I thought I had seen all the Vincent Price / Edgar Allen Poe films. Yet somehow I missed this one? I'll have to check it out sometime. It even has Boris Karloff in it. Those are two of my favorite horror actors.
The comments also suggested the Comedy of Terrors. Nice word play. Would you recommend?

There is also this one where he dramatically recites Poe's work.

One more thing, I was able to get one of his cookbooks. "Mary and Vincent Price's Come into the Kitchen Cook Book"

This person has a different one, in addition to an older version of mine.

I think mine has more of a focus on historical recipes, which is funny because I've been watching a youtube channel called Tasting History with Max Miller.

On IMDB I read that Edward G. Robinson once said if he was “a bit taller and a bit more handsome” he could have played a wider variety of roles. That could be true, and I know how Hollywood was/is, but…personally I find him handsome. 😜

Apparently he inspired Chief Wiggum’s voice lol. Wonder what Edward would have thought, had he lived to see The Simpsons. In one interview he said he was bored of seeing impressions of himself…but in cartoon form? No telling. Would be a change of scenery, at least.

Some old Christmas movies I enjoy:

—A Christmas Carol (1938)— Have on DVD

—Miracle on 34th Street (1947)— The remake has nothing one this one.

—Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

—White Christmas (1954)

No, I do not like It’s a Wonderful Life. Might be my most controversial Old Hollywood opinion…but it kinda drags.

The 1938 version of A Christmas Carol is also one of my favorites.Amazingly, there is one member of that cast who is still alive.June Lockhart is 99 years old and is the daughter of Gene and Kathleen Lockhart who played Mr. and Mrs.Cratchit in the same movie.June Lockhart played one of the Cratchit's children in the movie(quite a stretch,eh?).She was also in Meet Me In St.Louis.

Yeah. I tried watching the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol one year, and it just wasn't the same.

Also, from the 1938 version: "I say, you're govna's a crusty old bird." is one of my favorite quotes/inside jokes with family :ROFLMAO:

I like the 1951 version but it's rather dark compared to the '38 version and they added some stuff that wasn't in the book.

"Look who's coming down the street....a bloomin' topper!"

Some of those Rankin Bass specials were made in the 60's. One of the Easter shows even had Vincent Price as a rabbit villain. I've been trying to get a hold of some of the lesser known ones, but sometimes it isn't worth the effort, and you don't know it until you buy it and watch it.

Prior to moving out, my younger sister used to sing Frank Sinatra songs. His song, "Fly Me to the Moon" really sticks out to me and has since become one of my favorite songs from him. This is how I first found out about Frank Sinatra lol.

Suzie Toot referenced both Ruby Keeler and Eleanor Powell this week on Drag Race! I always root for the vintage-inspired queens, and I also like that she referenced actresses who are often overlooked in drag.

A lot of people say Liza Minnelli looks exactly like her mother (Judy Garland), but I don’t think that’s 100% true. Her father had distinctive large eyes, which I feel she has as well. Otherwise, she DOES look and sound like Judy— even when talking.

The pics of her as a baby are precious. 🥺

I'm surprised by old hollywood stars whose lives overlapped with mine when I was still a wee little baby.

Take Marlon Brando for example. He died on July 1, 2004, 3 days before my 1st birthday. Of course, I was obviously too young to remember when news of his death was first announced, but it's still weird thinking that he was still alive when I was still a baby.

I remember watching this documentary about the deaths of some rather famous, well known old Hollywood stars called Hollywood Heaven: Tragic Lives, Tragic Deaths. You can watch this documentary on YouTube, but it's also age-restricted.

Marlon was…an interesting guy to say the least.

I remember reading that he was desperate for money at one point, and wanted to come up with a product to sell on QVC. So, he had an acting class in the early 2000s— which would be put on DVD with the idea of being sold on QVC.

The class was called “Lying for a Living” and some other famous actors were in the class, such as Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg. The first day he mooned the class! (Idk how anyone decided to keep going!)

Like I said, it was filmed, but the footage hasn’t been released. Since I’m fascinated by lost media, I wonder if it would ever turn up.
