I’m having trouble deciding on the eye colour for Rei (Sailor Mars) on my island. I’ve had her with black eyes for the longest time but ever since they added purple eyes with last years Halloween update I’ve been torn on changing them.
Officially the character she is based on has violet eyes (I’ve included 4 official examples in the photo below of her eyes over the years in various media). I do find the Animal Crossing eyes a bit too bright but at the same time the black eyes lack any colour.
What eye colour do you think is more accurate to the character, and which one do you like better?
I think the left one looks better. The purple is just too bright, in my opinion. Plus, if anyone who sees the outfit knows who it is, the eye color won't make a difference in them being able to recognize the character.

I’d go for inaccurate but gets the look of her better than technically more accurate but too bright by far. Or if you have a civilian outfit and her Senshi outfit, use the black when she’s dressed for school and the violet when transformed. In little nitpicks that don’t REALLY matter in the grand scheme of things but do bug me, I wish the purple for hair and eye colors was a bit darker and less saturated, or at least that a second purple was available - honestly, I read the one we have as a second pink the first week or two, it’s so bright. (Especially as a hair color - I’d considered making an alt of Anthy Himemiya when I realized we had green flowers even if they’re not roses, but I have to squint to call that hair color lavender, especially compared to the still-pastel-but-much-more-clearly-purple hair from New Leaf.)
That said, I’d also think it matters what your ‘primary’ version of Sailor Moon is, since Crystal and Eternal made a lot of characters’ color palettes a lot brighter and lighter. Generally my default version of the characters is the 90s anime, where Rei’s eyes and hair are much darker and can be read as ‘black with purple highlights’ rather than more consistently purple, so I’d tone down to black. If you prefer the modern palettes, though, I’d say the purple works better even if it’s a bit too bright on the whole. The manga illustrations’ color palettes varied a lot more when they were colored in, so I’m not sure what to do if that version’s your favorite, but since it does tend towards lighter I think I’d lean purple.
I'd opt for the purple eyes because they're more character accurate. I agree with the sentiment that others have expressed throughout the thread that the purple is a bit too bright, but personally, if I was doing this then I'd just live with that. The purple is more distinct and interesting.
I'd also use the triangular nose instead since it would look closer to the character, but that's just me.
i initially voted for black, but after taking another look, i’ve changed my vote to purple instead. i definitely agree that it’s too bright to accurately match rei’s eye colour, but similar to what @/EtchaSketch said, the pop of colour looks really nice and suits your character well!
I'd go with the purple to be honest! It looks really colourful and vibrant, the other option is pretty and goes well with the character but I feel like they're really not as interesting.
