How do you think the new Animal Crossing Switch game will tackle pattern designing? This was a huge part of both ACNL and HHD, HHD giving players even more slots to store designs. For me at least, designing has become an integral part of the game. Switch doesn't really have a stylus so I'm wondering how they might include this feature, or if they'll scrap it completely? I can't imagine drawing anything by moving around the joystick or using my fingers... I've also gotten very used to using my stylus to drag and drop my tools and items. I wouldn't even be surprised if they introduce a stylus with the new game. Thoughts?

Not including a stylus was kinda silly (though I just use my own long stylus anyway), I think we'll still use the touch the screen in some matter to make them.
Just seems like a really unnecessary downgrade.

I always wondered how pattern designing would work since there's no actual touchpen for the Nintendo Switch's screen (and I wouldn't use a DS stylus since the screen seems sensitive). I definitely think they'll introduce a stylus with the game, since they're more than likely to use Happy Home designer features in the new game it would only make sense

pattern designing existed in the gamecube and wii games, you know

Yes, but the introduction of a stylus made designing a lot easier and intuitive.
I guess they wouldn't remove the function, but designing without the use of the stylus would be a biggg downgrade in my opinion.

That's what I'm thinking too. I just hope if they do it wont be an insanely expensive add on, hah. But I'm sure there will be third party versions too.

And we survived just fine before touch screens. And I wouldn't say it made things easier and intuitive with the stylus, especially on those awful DS/3DS screens which were clumsy and inaccurate. They introduce the zoom feature for a reason, which will undoubtedly make a return here too.

Just invest in a cheap capacitive stylus, should work just fine on the Switch screen.

tbh, touch controls are only ever good for basic things like filling colors

any sort of precision work, d-pad navigation is far superior

They'll probably let you choose between using the joystick/d-pad or the touchscreen. Although I'm hoping they making zooming in better so that using the touch screen is easier.

I've been wondering this too. I've never been good at designing, but hopefully they will find some sort of way to make it easy. I might be able to do it with the touch screen, but I'm not sure.

Just one question: Will the resolusion of patterns be bigger this time? I mean, this is the first mainline AC game in HD and if you are going to make patterns for clothing and such, I think it's going to look a little too pixelated if you keep the old 32x32 style.

Well, the switch does respond to finger touches, so touch screen wouldn't be a problem... a stylist works, the one with those soft, yet hard nibs you see for cellphones (or any kinda rubberish area, not rubber eraser though), so even making a stylist with this in mind works as well

Well, there are three options:

1) They are going to introduce a Nintendo Switch stylus that comes with the game and can
also be use in other games in the future

2) It's the same way as back in the GC and Wii games: You will use the d-pad or alternative
now your finger(s)

3) Pattern designing will be removed completely (which is however very unlikely, since there
is still option 2 that would work)

I've been wondering about that for the longest time, even before we got the announcement.

Admittedly, 32x32 should still look fine as the basic pattern resolution, but I think that they should introduce a 64x64 "Pro" option for those that want to go the extra mile and really produce some high quality patterns.

I think pattern designing is something only the consistent players toyed with. Can't imagine my grandma or cousin using that feature at all. With that in mind I think they could easily let you take the Switch out the dock and use the touchscreen to make patterns since relatively speaking not many people use the feature anyway.

Also as others have already pointed out, the old console games also had this feature without having any kind of touchscreen. The Switch is also capable of using a pointer like system similar to the Wii so they could Always go that route if they wanted to.

Just had a thought about the introduction a Nintendo Switch stylus: Another game which could need
such a stylus is Super Mario Maker to create the stages. If there is a new Mario Maker then we would
have two games already where such a stylus would be helpful.

you know what i would really love?
if you could somehow attach sounds to designs. esp. for paths like brick sounds, wood sounds, normal grass sound etc. that would be amazing!
they have the sounds for it since the flooring makes the same sounds so why not?
also a data base with all qr codes where you can just search for designs would be amazing too!

That would be nice, kinda like those ambiance sound features in happy home designer. Maybe they’ll implement some sort of database searching option for pattern sharing... since I guess we can’t use cameras for taking pictures of QRs online. I also agree that it would be nice to have an option for a larger size to make more intricate designs, as well as bringing back the zooming in function.

I do wonder who they will handle pattern sharing since I don't think that the Switch has a camera

Probably some kind of Dream Suite system: upload your pattern to Nintendo servers and you get a pattern code to share.

Or at least at the bare minimum. What would be even better is a full-on searchable database like others said though. Like browsing the Happy Home Network in HHD.

I've been thinking similarly, but using a phone app instead. Similar to how the app shop works on Splatoon 2, you could browse a database of user created content there and have it sent to the tailors for pickup.

Heck, they could go the extra mile with this and allow for pattern creation right from your phone and have it sent to the game.

Animal Crossing, more than any other Nintendo title, would benefit a lot from a companion app.
