People giving away your dodo code

The idea that you have to turn your island into a fortress in order to do trades rubs me the wrong way. It's why I'll stick to people I know. :(
You dont need to do any of that stuff for casual trades.
So long as you do trades one person at a time, you can keep an eye on them.
If they try anything, you can just turn the game straight off and the session will end with everything reset like it never happened.

The only times I've ever heard of bad stuff happening is when the person let stranger run around their island freely.

People have way too much on their hands if they are typing out random Dodo Codes to find islands to travel to. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone shared codes without the host’s permission. There are some people that are up to no good. Even so, I think most people have their entrances blocked off.

I understand that, and I've not had any problems with trades before. I've stuck to trading with people from this site, or a Tumblr group that we all have talked before, so I'm careful about who comes over. Most just drop the item and leave, some ask if they may shop. I don't open up to large groups, because that just gets difficult.

I was commenting more about people I've seen who have worried about incoming people with wetsuits and having to put fences along the beach, so people don't try to sneak in that way.

I find that most players are pretty considerate when traveling to someone else’s island, although I can’t lie— I have had a handful of instances when someone wasn’t on the up and up. I generally don’t mind people exploring my island, but because I decorate my island with hard-to-find droppable items like mushrooms and acorns, I have had to keep tabs on visitors who may not understand not everything is up for grabs. I also had one instance where two other players on my island were doing a trade and one stole from the other— luckily, I was quick enough to close the game before the thief escaped. Still, I shouldn’t have to play cop in AC!

As mentioned above, the best approach for me has been to allow only one person in at a time, so you can monitor their activity a bit. I hate to be big brother about it, but that is the trade off!

Let me be clear there is a lot of kids that play this game so they may not understand the rules of trading and it can make things complicated for them to understand. So proceed with caution when you're trading with someone who may seem inexperienced when it comes to trading. Of course not all of them are bad, but at the same time you have to becareful because there could be scammers pretending to act like this just to drop your guard. Trust me I know from experience.

Didn't read the whole thing, but this is a common thing that people have done since the game launched. Person A will arrive for whatever reason and person B will join soon after saying they 'were randomly pushing numbers and got lucky' What it normally is (or always) is both are in cahoots. Person A goes of to do whatever and Person B tries to keep your attention/occupied so that A can do whatever it is they want to do. Which is normally something scummy and underhanded. Just block them both and move on.

I'm still new at this, please forgive my ignorance. Is there a way to swim to other islands? when I swim out a certain distance, a net appears and prevents me from going any further.

You can't swim to someone else's island from yours, but if you are wearing a wetsuit, you can jump off the pier when you come out of the airport. From there, you can swim around to their beach.

I see, makes sense now. Thanks! :)

Edit: I didn't know you could jump off the pier and rocks and ledges! Now I'm jumping off everything when I want to go swim!

I wouldn’t hesitate to end the session if a stranger was trying to visit my island. Always a good practice to ask the other person their island rep name and island name before they come over, so that you know who to expect.

That's super weird. I think I read someone's post on here once where they gave their code to one person, and then that person invited a second and they tried to prank them or something (nothing bad happened, IIRC, but the person was freaked out pretty good and it was super awkward).
I have trouble believing the second person really didn't know the first- the chances of them randomly typing numbers and getting an active code is just so absurdly small. It definitely sound like the first person gave the code away. Maybe for nefarious purposes, maybe for a prank, IDK. But it sounds like nothing bad actually happened, so that's good at least.

I've never had it happen to me, but I'm always super alert when I have a visitor. I've never had any issues with trading, actually, but I may just be lucky that way (I also only trade on here, and I think the feedback system scares off most scammers/ne'er do wells)

And I agree with others here that Nintendo should do something to stop people from diving off the pier. If you invite someone to your island to dive, chances are you'll have plenty of space for them to dive off. Having the pier be diveable doesn't really add much to the game except potential risk.

Yah, if a stranger ever did show up, I'd shut it down right away. Maybe it's a mistake, maybe it's a joke, maybe it's totally innocent... but, if that's the case, then the first person should be understanding.

Add this to the list of reasons I always fly to their island instead of hosting unless it’s for like large quantities of stuff.

I also just hate the dodo code dialogue it’s so must faster to just fly somewhere.

I don’t think that person was just inputting random combos trying to get working dodos. They were probably told the code.

If someone is sitting around inputting letters and numbers to get working dodos… lmao that is just sad, get a life.

I’ll never understand why people insist on being so crappy in this game. Like just in a general way, you can literally go on to any trading platform such as the one here, discords, nookazon, etc and ask for anything for free and you’ll find it. I don’t get why some people choose to be so mean, but tis life right? It’s just sad the AC trading market has gone so down hill. I know it got this way with NL, but ugh just have some decency please.

Another way to stop this:
If you see a visitor you don't know, just hit the power. After about 15sec, they should be disconnected from coming over, beause it closes my gates constantly when I do that even on accident, lol.

edit; you can also just hit the home button. :]

Thats why I quit trading last year and I can tell you it ruined my self esteem and left me severally depressed for a long while.

I have to agree with the previous comments, for the life of me I can not understand how someone has enough time to just plug in random numbers and letters to find an active code. People like that must not have a life and or job. Sorry this happen to you. Hopefully this will not effect you using the trading option in the future. I've been very fortunate that everyone that I'll traded with has been 100% wonderful.

Wow, I've never heard of that happening before... Seems pretty absurd and unlikely, but I suppose it could happen by accident or attempt. You'll always have some weird players on any online game. 😅

I’d like to say I’d end it in this situation, but I’d be way to curious as to what their agenda is. If they went through all that trouble to visit my Island I’d probably just see what happens. There’s not much they can do to mess my Island up unless they had a ladder to get to my star fragments. If that were the case then I would end it before they got up there. I don’t understand the appeal though to be honest, if you wanted to visit other people’s Islands that’s what dream addresses are for.

Just so someone new doesn't get put off from trading in this thread, I'll add that I trade pretty actively (something like 200 trades on Nookazon, supposedly New Horizon's "black market") and have never had a bad experience or had an unexpected guest show up. Jerks are very low probability events, and the "-" button is your friend just in case.
