Alolan_Apples
“Assorted” Collector
After two days of playing this new game (which is actually a remake of a 1900’s game), I am here to give out my opinions.
Although I never played the 20th century version of the game (Pokémon Yellow) or any main series Pokémon games until Sun and Moon, I did know Pokemon for a long time. I played the spin-offs, watched the show, and even had a couple toys, long before I played Pokémon Sun and Moon. It’s nice that we get a remake of an older game. I was able to see what it’s like playing the original games, but with huge graphical and mechanical updates. I even learned where the soundtracks like used in Pokémon Stadium originally came from.
What I did like:
While it’s basically the same game as Pokemon Yellow, but with a few improvements, here’s what I liked about the game:
What I didn’t like:
Of course, there are some things I wasn’t happy with in the game. Here are a few disappointments I found:
Conclusion:
Right now, my current rating is 9/10. I think it’s a good idea to remake Pokémon Yellow for the Switch because people are strongly appealed to the first generation, yet the battling mechanics, graphics, and quality of sound were all outdated due to the data limitations of the time and the improvements to the game. So we can appreciate the older generation while using modern graphics, sound, and gameplay. Meanwhile, it’s a bad idea to remake Pokémon Yellow. The Kanto region had too much appreciation, the world doesn’t need another video game remake, and why would you have a remake as your first title on the console?
I’ll continue having fun playing this game.

What I did like:
While it’s basically the same game as Pokemon Yellow, but with a few improvements, here’s what I liked about the game:
- All 18 Alolan form Pokémon are in the game. It doesn’t even require Pokémon Go to get. I caught a couple of Vulpixes (an Eevee version exclusive Pokémon) and traded three of them at a Pokémon Center for some Alolan forms (including a Modest-natured one). I am fine playing a game with only the first 151 Pokémon, as long as I can have the regional variants (but that’s mostly due to the lack of Ice Pokémon back in the first generation).
- The Pokéball Plus has become my favorite controllers. I’ve been using this as my primary controller of the game. I chose the Pokéball Plus pre-order since I wanted to get Mew early, but what I didn’t realize is that the Pokéball Plus is a controller.
- I liked how you can have a second character at once to help you. I discovered this on accident, but I found it more beneficial than harmful. I don’t have to worry too much about swapping Pokémon for a more effective Pokémon when I have two at once. This is the opposite of the SOS thing from Pokémon Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.
- While it takes us back to the first generation, it is the overhaul like what Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild were. Catching Pokémon is a lot like Pokémon Go, candies are a lot like Poké Pelago’s Isle Evelup, and I can put Pokémon away in storage on the go. And it returns Pokemon Sun and Moon’s Poké Pager ride.
- I like the Partner Pokémon moves (like cutting down trees) too. So far, I have two of these moves.
What I didn’t like:
Of course, there are some things I wasn’t happy with in the game. Here are a few disappointments I found:
- The limited character customization. I know that the Pokémon games don’t have trainer customization as good as Animal Crossing does since it’s not all about that, but even so, Pokémon Sun and Moon had a larger customization pool. All the outfits I can unlock are different variations of the same clothes you have from the beginning. I would be okay if the female character could only wear is short skirts as the bottom wear (which is actually not the case, and even if it were, I would still not like it). Usually when I play a female character, her outfit is based on what I like to see on women if I were to get married. But this game fails to meet this.
- I can’t breed Pokémon in this game. I understand that it’s supposed to be a remake of the original, and that Pokémon breeding didn’t exist, but when I want to make competitive Pokémon, I prefer to breed my own rather than catch to use or borrow someone else’s. This is the way I could get good-natured Pokémon and to be the original trainer.
