Is there a certain type of gift each villager prefers based on personality type or something? Some villagers i'll give them a piece of clothing and they'll give me furniture in return, other villagers i'll give an oarfish or an expensive fossil/piece of furniture and they'll give me a striped shirt back. Is there a method to this? I want to give all my villagers the best possible gift and have the best chance of getting furniture back from them. I've been looking on google and everywhere for an answer and wasn't able to find out anything. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

This is in no way scientific or tested.
Try to think about the type of villager.
For example. Jocks like sports things and clothing. Crankie's like more retro stuff or simple items. Normals like books and cute items. Uchis like sporty or rock and roll items. Ect.
My gift giving goes better when I take those into account. Axel loved the barbell I gave him but was only mildly interested in some fancy clothing. Makes sense.

I see ok i'll mess around with giving different villager types different gifts and take note of which gifts give me furniture back instead of just giving everyone expensive fish/butterflies and stuff. thank you
