To be honest, I am not suprised by this considering the type of company Nintendo is, and I don't really understand why people would even think they would say yes to this.
Anyway, considering the type of game this is, what type of company Nintendo is, and the demographic this game is targeted towards, I have to say that Nintendo's move is justified.
You see, this game is geared towards a wide audience, children, teens like me, and adults. Same sex relationships is a rather controversial thing. With children and teens, parents may not want their children to be exposed to that type of stuff. Some adults themselves do not want to be exposed to that type of stuff.
Also, Nintendo is a company that wants them and their games to be looked at in a positive by society, especially western society. With that being said, same sex relationships and marriage is not something that is taken very well by society. I believe it is even illegal in some territories. These are main types of things you will have to deal with when bringing a game to another country.
I remember a user saying something like "well, that's too bad". So, they are just supposed to disregard those people and turn down potential sales? And with that being said, including this can actually jeopardize potential sales. I am not kidding. Some parents might refuse to buy this for their children just because of something like that being in the game, some adults who are buying the game for themselves might refuse to buy it just because of that. Heck, some children and teens might not want it because of that. It could get banned in some territories because of that. It could prevent this game from being successful sale wise!
Also, another claim is that "other games do this". Okay, this is just like if you go to someone elses house, their parents don't let you do something and you say "well my parents let me do it at my house". Nintendo is not like those companies, they don't have the same target audience as those companies, and those companies probably don't have a way they want to be looked at by society.
For example, the person mentioned The Sims. First off, these games may be similar, but have their differences. In the Sims that type of stuff is something that is done by the player's own will. In Tomodachi Life, you don't have that much control over what the Miis in the apartment do, so your Mii is not guaranteed to fall in love with who you want it to be. However, the main thing is the demographic. The Sims is rated T, and it is really geared towards an older audience, not really children. Plus, EA is not trying to keep any sort of reputation. Tomodachi Life is rated E and is meant to be geared towards all age groups. Nintendo is trying to keep a good reputation with society, especially western society.
And before you bring up them disregarding LGBT people. Well, being exposed to straight relationships is not controversial for LGBT people. Also, the same sex marriage is a glitch, not an intentional design feature.
Overall, this type of feature being in the game would just cause way too much controversy and that can cause way too many highly potential cons than it would with it not being in the game.
