I've been on those types of forums. Specifically Harvest Moon ones and I was there to get ideas for TBT mostly. But they all failed, lol.

I find straight text RP to be difficult without any sort of system in place.
With Shadowrun and D&D you've got your stats, your equipment, etc. And the RP people were doing in the RP board here confused the heck out of me, I didn't really get it at all.

I WAS AN ADMIN OF ONE OF THOSE HARVEST MOON ONES. Oh god that was like years ago...

I think that a system is the only way to go in a text RP. Most of the time when I see RPs they are set up like this:

"Hey who wants to RP with me? Just leave a character profile and I'll look at it. When we get 5 people we can begin!"

There are no rules to the game. There is no story. There is no goal. I understand that RP is supposed to be sandbox like but it can only be like that for so much of the story. There needs to be a plot, there needs to be a goal, and there needs to be rules. No character can be "ultimate" (as in, they can't die/they have some crazy superpower that makes them too OP etc), and although I like fantasy, there needs to be physics involved as well unless of course, you character is a mage and actually KNOWS a spell that can alter physics for a moment. I would like to RP on the Bell Tree but I'm not sure it would go so well.

If we are going to try an RP, someone needs to come up with a topic. That can be discussed in the Basement or the Writers' Guild, whichever you prefer. After a topic, there needs to be a loose story with a goal that way it gives RP players a chance to fill in the fluff around the story and everyone can have fun while working toward the goal of the story.

We kind of did that, but it was really broad. Something I've seen on a lot of the successful RP Boards is that they have an active RP Master that creates the topic and the story and keeps the story on track by stating the events that are happening. For example, instead of the players, themselves, coming up with ideas, the RPM gives them a scenario that goes along with the story and they have to act accordingly.

Example:

Kaiaa: She was walking through the forest, noticing the breeze. She sat down on a broken tree and relaxed, taking in the air.
RPM: Suddenly, out of nowhere, a lone figure approached her. He towered over her, and wore a hood over his face.

Something like that. Kind of like a Roleplay Moderator.

I actually think that is a great idea. It saves the RP from the complete randomness that a lot of players accidentally (or purposely) cause in the story. Don't get me wrong, I loved the PKM Mystery Dungeon RP but after a while it became too random and no one was really progressing the story. There were times people tried to progress it but it would be shot down by others. I believe that the RPM should be responsible for the storyline and the players of that RP need to respect that and have their character(s) act accordingly to the scenarios the RPM develops.

Because no one wants to put up an RP topic no one will join, please feel free to discuss RP topic ideas in the Writers' Guild. After we come to an agreement on an idea, one of us can make the topic.

You don't know that nobody will join it >.>

No, but one likes to be sure.

I see that you too would like a Fallout style/apocalyptic RP :) I wonder how many others would...

Wait wait wait. There was a roleplaying board??!! Well, were is it now? Being a new member, I'm quite interested!

It was closed due to inactivity, sadly. I think the best thing to do is get a bunch of people on board before starting an RP.

Oh, that's a shame. Hopefully more active members will join as we get closer to the New Leaf release! :)

I'd totally RP if this happened. I've been into RPing since '07 and I've done a few forum RPs before but mostly IM. It'd be interesting to do things on forums again. ^^

Here's what we said on the matter back in April:

Hey guys. We've decided to allow RP games in The Basement as a test to see if there's interest. Go ahead and create an RP thread in that board if you have an idea and are committed to it. We'll evaluate the need for a separate RP board based on the popularity of RP threads in The Basement. They can be moved to the RP board if needed then.

As far as I know, nobody actually started an RP. The offer is still open though!

I love Role Play when its done right, but unfortunately online it is usually a disaster. But I will give this one a try and see how it goes.

I've been involved with Roleplaying in one form or another since the late 70s.

Is RPing good offline?

There's been discussion in the Writers' Guild, but nobody has actually decided to do anything. Nobody seems to want to start it. To be fair, I'm partially to blame for not wanting to start it :/

I run Pathfinder (a Pen/Paper offline game) every Thursday at our local Library, and my game is just one of 4 that are played each week. Remember Role playing has been around longer than the internet or even video games. and yes it is usually a lot of fun.
