Thought that the Animal Crossing amiibo cards will be plentiful and have an even harder time running out of stock than the figure ones? Too bad! There's an ongoing rumor that the cards are actually facing big stock shortage in Japan, even before the game has even a chance of getting released.

Keep in mind that this is happening at AmiAmi, an online store known for delivering cheap Japanese goods to your home. This might be an indicator the shortage issues that are associated with amiibo figures would also happen to the cards.

I've just been charged for my Play Asia pre order and I placed my order a while after they went up so they seem to be OK for stock :S

I suspected this for a while but I was hoping it wasn't true. Amazon, Rakuten, AmiAmi, Joshin, and every other major online store I can think of that was doing preorders was out of stock weeks ago. The new bundled 3DS LL is also having supply issues I think; mine won't ship from Amazon until over a week after release.

I managed to preorder a few sets from Joshin, but we'll see if my order will be cancelled or not. I'll also be going to a physical store early on release day, so I'll see if Bic Camera (and maybe Yodobashi or some smaller game stores) have stock then, but when I asked a few days ago they said they weren't sure what their stock would be like in-store.

I think this has happened for a couple of reasons:

1) Japan is crazy for Animal Crossing - it is really quite popular over there after all.
2) Japan is crazy for trading cards - these cards appeal to a really big market in Japan.
3) Many people are importing - seriously, go to reddit amiibo and you'll see how import-happy people over there are. Loads of people (mainly from the US?) seem to either be impatient or don't want to get them from American retailers so import amiibo from Japan.
4) People go crazy for the amiibo logo. There are loads of people on that reddit saying they're trying to collect every single amiibo or are only buying all these figures and cards because they have that amiibo tag (lots of I don't know this character but I want it to complete collection). It's annoying because it reduces stock for fans but it also drives up sales. :/

Hopefully stock won't stay low for too long, as I'm guessing cards can be reprinted easier and faster than figures.

I feel bad for the people who preordered the cards at AmiAmi :(
thankfully I preordered from Play-Asia, just like 19cookies did

I actually tried to pre order from AmiAmi first, but my card wouldn't go through. Kind of glad that happened now, though I do feel bad for people who did pre order from there :/

Think I might just run into my local game shop and hope for the best when they come out

Amibo shortages are happening everywhere but Australia, I think I'm good.

Plus he western release is a few months after the Japanese release. It gives ENG nintendo a chance to look at how they can prevent this so..
