so yesterday i came across two different black market sellers on another website who were selling just about everything in the game for real money. for example, all diy recipes were being sold for $79! it gave me mixed feelings about the whole thing. i just don’t think it’s right selling in-game items for real money (which i’m sure is illegal anyway), much less duped items, but with the whole unemployment thing going on because of the pandemic.. i guess it’s a somewhat steady way to earn income? idk.

how do you guys feel about it? and should players (especially newer ones) who buy from them be somewhat criticised for allowing them to have a business?

It's definitely shady. Anything can be obtained in the game on your own with patience or traded with online with others for currencies in the game lol. I don't understand it and wouldn't purchase it from anyone. I'd rather take forever and get all DIYs on my own than pay more than I bought the game for lol

Edit: Amiibo are a different story. They are at least legit made by Nintendo and aren't using stuff like powersaves against Nintendo's Terms of Service. While I don't agree with scalpers, it's not the same as items in-game.

I'm willing to purchase DLC or occasional physical content like amiibo cards for more than retail but I have never purchased already in game content with real money before and don't plan to. Buying the new furniture sets or already in game villagers for real money just seems like the riskiest of all transactions to me. Even if you're strapped for cash, there's other ways to make money today... also that price just makes it even worse imo. I just couldn't ever let myself do something like that.

I wonder if anyone actually buys things for that amount of money? I hope not. I think it's silly.

I reallllly hope kids aren't finding those listings and getting their parents to buy them. That would be my main concern.

yeah and i don’t think the parents would think twice about it. i’ve seen someone mention that a young child once had their parents buy them 800 tickets from ebay or something like that.

The sad part is that people will buy these items too. I was watching a really nice girl on YouTube do mystery island hunts and in her video she mentioned buying more tickets on eBay. I tried to inform her of ways she can get tickets without spending real money. So it seems people do spend money on these items and don’t realize they are dupes.

i think it's incredibly ****ty of people to do, especially in times like this. this game is supposed to be a source of happiness/peace and so many scumbags are out there taking advantage in every way they can.

i mean, some fault lies with those who are actually paying real money for animal crossing stuff, but still. it's sad to me that it's this bad.

I think that's wrong and also a scam since I don't believe that it's worth THAT much. (I mean all DIYs are obtainable via balloons and events so...) also they're most likely hacked (If they say *all*, they possibly have the Wedding DIYs included so that's an uh-oh.)

i have a feeling that most of the people buying duped items with money are new players that have just been introduced to the franchise, thus not knowing about sites like tbt where you can just get about anything through trading and not have to worry so much about being scammed like nookazon. but i could be wrong.

$79 for all DIY recipes...which doesnt even guarantee that youll be able to craft all of it.......
if people want to spend their money on that then whatever its not my business. i do think its silly though. practices like this shouldnt be encouraged imo

It's definitely hacked. I don't think that anyone would go through the time to collect all 590+ DIYs just to sell it for $80.

i don’t recall it being like this during new leaf? i get that the demand of having certain villagers/items is going to push people to sell them with money, but i do wonder if there’s other factors that has influenced these actions.

Personal opinion, yes, it's stupid and no one should be paying anyone real currency for hacked/duped virtual items, especially for that much. The seller is violating Nintendo's TOS, they can get into serious legal trouble doing that (Nintendo is known for not holding back their punches). The buyers are as much to blame, they're pretty much rewarding those that do practice selling items for irl currency by buying them. These sellers are literally profiting off of someone else's art. I'd rather buy paid items directly from Nintendo, at least that goes to the developers themselves.

I think it’s ridiculous and not worth it in my opinion, I saw a seller on my local website selling bells for real money, it’s also ridiculous to sell villagers with real money especially with eBay sometimes.

That sounds very sketchy to me… even if I were a new player, I can’t see myself spending money on in game items on eBay. Amiibo stuff, sure, but things that are obtainable in game at no cost? Yeah, no.
I’m with the person who said they’re concerned kids will find the listings and ask their parents to buy the stuff and actually get it.

And, isn’t it against Nintendo’s ToU (or whatever) to sell in game stuff for real money anyways? If that’s true that creates another major red flag, imo.

i think it’s pretty silly - i guess it could be argued with the fact that people pay for stuff in mobile games but still, $79 is a lot of money to be dishing out for diys ;u;
