So I'm kind of on and off with my game right now and my island still needs a lot of work. I don't want anymore trees and I don't think I want anymore bushes. I've placed decorations, I'm working on paths, and have a pumpkin patch. Otherwise though, my town is still pretty barren and I don't like to have a large amount of decorations. I prefer the natural island look with minor development. I want to start placing weeds to look like tall grass but what else can I do to fill random spaces on the ground? Should I use plant patterns? More stumps?? Show me pics or tell me what you added to your town's empty spaces! I wanna know how to fill my town! :)

As someone who plugs most empty spaces with trees and bushes (I have a feral island), I’m not sure what advice I can give you...

If you have a decently-sized chunk of land, you might be able to make a nice shaped pond!

or, at least, an attempt at a deer hoof lol

Cute!! Maybe I should add more water!!! Or even cliffs! I forgot all about my terraforming lmao. Thank you!!

can't really show you because i don't have any photos at hand but it tends to be a mixture of things: weeds, flowers, bushes, and patterns. i also use fences, namely the barbed wire and plain picket fences. i'll put down one square of the barbed wire fence in front of/next to a tree or surround half of a tree with some of the picket fence. i also use the log stakes in place of the barbed wire fence sometimes for variety.

i use barrels near certain areas like my butterfly garden, pumpkin patch etc. tall lanterns. wooden buckets. (these look especially cute near water.) right now i've got the mush log things, coloured red and white, in various places to fill space. garden rocks look good in certain places. i have a few pieces of firewood down in places next to trees too.

I love some of these ideas! Thank you! I particularly like the idea of placing some additional fencing down! I might do that around my island and the firewood too! All of those sound so good!!

since i don't have any photos, you're welcome to visit my dream address to see what i mean with the fencing. the picket fence idea isn't implemented all over the place yet since, like, 50% of my island still isn't done lmao but i think i updated it recently enough for there to be some examples: 4896-9558-1620.

I can post a picture of a little stand decoration, my playground, my forest, and my pumpkin patch later. But if you play in the northern hemisphere, winter is coming and you will probably need open spaces for snowmen. Don't feel bad about keeping open spaces if you don't want to fill them.

Thank you! I'll drop by next time I'm on!!

Thanks for the advice! I forgot about snowmen!! It's not that I feel bad about having the space, I just personally don't like seeing it on my island when I play, so I'd like to fill it but I'm running out of ideas, this thread has been so helpful already though!

at the moment I love putting hyacinth & mush lamps everywhere and sprinkling small flower designs on the floor lol
also insect models, especially in combination with flowers and weeds

Not sure if this will work with the natural island look, but you could try adding a picnic blanket (custom path) and furniture to make a little picnic area. And there's lots of furniture to choose from that you could place on it, like candles, picnic baskets, cushions, books, etc so

I don't have a ton of pictures to hand but my go to for filling small areas is usually a bench or something with some flowers etc! I have one area that's a swinging bench and mini library, a picnic area, and with a slightly larger area I made a bigger park with a pond and some trees and everything (currently no picture of that).

I just wait for some cool set to be released and then use that space for that. Just did it for the Turkey Day set, actually! I’ve got a plot reserved for the Super Mario items supposedly coming in early 2021 :)

I’ll usually leave it there for a few weeks and, if I feel it’s lacking or could be better, I replace it with something else, lets me cycle stuff in and out.

I don't even have the game so take what I say with a grain of salt but maybe you could make a fruit orchard if you haven't already? I feel like that would fit with a natural theme.

Placing down scattered rocks or broken looking paths may be interesting.

Depending on where your villager's houses are placed you might be able to spread them out a little and allocate more specific themes to different areas of the island e.g. one area is a forest, another is a meadow, maybe something cottagecore/fairycore inspired?

I like to put out some sort of chair and table combination, with something on the table - a book, candle, etc. I've also put a peach or apple chair in front of a tree. It's amazing how often the villagers sit there. I've also put a cushion on the ground with a candle next to it. A picnic blanket pattern on the ground with a short table and cushions around it. I put candles and tea cups on the table. I have something similar on the beach. I know you said you don't want more trees, but if you want some height, add a street lamp or the clock (can't remember exactly what it's called.)

Trees and flowers and weeds. I prefer more of the natural look with pockets of my island being heavily decorated with furniture whilst the majority of it remains quite wild.

The seating areas are cute! I like the idea of using mum cushions to fill in areas where it’s woodsy because it fits the aesthetic of the area plus adds something, and if a villager sat on one they would look so cute!

my island is still heavily a work in progress, but here's a few things that i've done that have taken up some of the extra room i didn't know what to do with so far 🖤

I put infused water dispensers on mush logs or log stools with a bush or two.
