So, should snooty and crankies be mean again?

Should snooties and crankies villagers be mean again?

  • I think they should ALWAYS be mean, even if we have a high frienship with them.

I think one thing that would be nice is if we could actually show our friendship to them. Like, if I'm talking to that stupid ostrich Queenie and she tells me my clothing is ugly, it would be nice to give a response that either says "I don't care, your opinion doesn't matter" or "that hurt my feelings" and then maybe that way she could see how hurtful her words are and we could grow closer in that way. Like why do we always have to do everything to make the villagers like us? But at the same time, I don't want them liking us right off the bat.

Another thing I'd like is a difference in villager type. Make some animals have different "growth rates" for their friendship. Like maybe Apollo is very distant at first but once he warms up to you it's really hard to lose his friendship, but then maybe someone like Maple is really nice at first but if you say the wrong thing she'll be offended more and get sadder and more distant.

I kind of agree with the idea that we're mistaking interesting dialogue with meanness, even though I used to think "dang I wish my NL villagers would bully me."
The original AC had so much humorous dialogue that it was hard to get bored. But I watched some playthroughs recently, and the villagers just go way too hard sometimes? I can't imagine a kid's game released today that would call the player fat, worthless, etc. like AC did.
WW is probably the idea balance, the villagers would warm up to you but would still be sassy. And it's not just snooty/cranky villagers that were mean, basically all of them could be (jocks used to be very judgemental, peppies acted like gossipy popular girls, lazies were pretty bratty about rejection). I think maybe I'm not looking for "meanness" but just the personalities showing their FLAWS, like crankies being annoyed by loud noises, frustrated by not understanding the youth, bad hygiene (ok maybe most people are glad that was removed, but it was a trait in older games) instead of always being nice dads. Snooties will give backhanded compliments, are insecure about being "old," and have trouble seeing things from a "commoner's" perspective. And smugs, which are new but basically the counterpart to snooties, already have some good dialogue because of the pretentious things they say, but they should warm up to you instead of being in love with you at first sight.
Although I'm kind of glad normals don't have the preoccupation with cleanliness anymore, which was more...abnormal.

I do understand what people are saying about there being a difference between varied dialog and the villagers being mean. I just want interesting dialog again and I don't want every villager to love me as soon as I step foot into town/on the island. As others have said, I think it should be based on personality. Normals and lazies could be nice right away and that would still be very fitting, but crankies and snooties should make you work harder. They don't have to be outright mean and nasty, but I do want that rudeness that I associate with those personalities. I think there's a nice balance that can be found between the sometimes harsh GameCube dialog and the far too bland New Leaf dialog where villagers can still be true to their personalities without being completely offensive.

LOL, people voting for "I just want them villagers to be nice and peaceful. AC should NOT be about meanness.". Maybe Sesame Street would be a better game for y'all?

Found the Snooty!

They can throw in the occasional compliment when we're best buddies! Try don't have to go all soft but, they can share a couple of nostalgic stories and tell them they're our Papa! I love that! Because, Tom is my AC Papa! (○︎-艸・)*:゚・☆︎

i don't really see anyone merging meanness with substance, just people complaining about it, lol.

the personalities in NL were absolutely the most bland of any game. i got to a point where i talked to them out of obligation, because i had all the dialogue memorized. i don't remember it ever being that bad before, but it could very well be nostalgia glasses. all personalities seemed to blend together in NL though.

but to answer the question... i'm somwhere between the first and second answer in the poll. i do feel like if a villager is cranky, they should at least act like it some of the time. not necessarily all the time, sure, but... eh. as long as they're not watered down even further, i'll live. i'd love it if all the personalities got made a little more interesting, instead of being 20 lines of dialogue with a couple of variables in it. finding a new line after playing for a month would be nice.

I think they should definitely come off as snooty and cranky a lot more than they did in new leaf. However, I think if you build up a good friendship with them it would kinda suck if they still acted like they hated you lol. In the GameCube though I remember it being really funny that my villagers would actually be mean and even call you names if you made them mad. Even my dad used to push around Tom to make him mad and he would laugh at how mean Tom was lol. New leaf dialogue felt so dry...and in a game so focused on befriending your neighbors you shouldn?t have to skip through what they are saying because you have heard it so many times.

Well I went off on a tangent. But yeah they should definitely be a bit meaner until you become friends, but that crazy and snooty side should still show itself occasionally.

I wish they would bring back some of their personalities. They’re so watered down in the new games that I don’t really care about any of the villagers anymore. I don’t have any of my games anymore, but when I did I barely talked to my villagers unless I wanted to find out who was moving. It’s hard to get attracted to them when they have the personality of a piece of cardboard lol

Wasn't complaining about it, but in a thread about whether villagers should be mean or not, the main discussion ended up being (as you said in the next sentence), NL being bland. My point is that the meanness should be entertaining if present at all, and not villagers just harshly insulting us for not giving them your furniture.

ah sorry- i wasnt targeting you specifically, or anyone at all really. just thought that specific discussion came up a bunch when it wasn't really what was asked at all. definitely agree with you on that last point, PG wasn't perfect by any means and it was for sure a weird reaction of the villagers

Yeah I think no offense to the TC, but it might help make people's opinions clearer on where they stand if the options were something like:

- I want Snooty and Cranky villagers to return to being rude and mean like they were in the GC version. The oldies are the goldies!

- I want villagers to show more personality and be less bland, but not to the point of being mean or cruel to the player. Some spice is nice!

- I see nothing wrong with villager personalities from NL, just with more dialog lines. I like them all being nice and friendly as they are. Don't revoke what ain't broke!

No I don't want them to be mean! At least not as bad as they were in the originals. I understand it makes them less robotic so I'm fine with a rude response to something that makes them upset and them being mean at first then warming up to you, but not constant meanness please!

I love how sweet villagers are now and I destress with AC. I'm a bit of a cry baby so if I'm having a particularly bad day and a villagers mean to me I might actually cry (no matter how silly it sounds). ;^; I think they should be less robotic then they are in NL. Let them be angry when you're mean to them, let them be grumpy at first, but no to always mean!

This is precisely what I want! I think I'd like them to be a little bit mean at first, then progressively become nicer as our friendship grows. Even then, though, I think they should still make some snarky comments every once in a while.

I'd definitely love it if they had a bit more personality, especially crankies! Maybe not quite to the extremes of the Gamecube days, but they were definitely kind of bland in New Leaf especially, so it'd be lovely to see some more personality. I love the idea of them being nicer to you as they warm up to you more, but I'd love if they could still retain some of the crankiness/snootiness, even when you're friends with them!
