1. NEVER USE BRUSHES TO MAKE BACKGROUNDS OF YOUR SIGNATURE. It looks cheesy and is extra work, I normally use gradient maps for my backgrounds, but I guess most things would work as long as it's not brushes.

2. NEVER USE A FONT THAT DOESN'T MATCH AND IS HUGE. Huge text is another dumb thing, it removes the purpose of the render. Most of the time, your eyes are on the text, not the real focal point. So I do 24 size font or lower. And make sure your text font is not stupid looking, Arial works well with most signatures IMO, so use that.

3. NEVER USE IMAGES WITH WHITE BACKGROUNDS. Say you found an image on Google images you want to use. 25% of the time it's transparent, 75% it has a black or white background. Now do yourself a favor and look at PlanetRenders for images that are transparent. Or you could render them yourself, but I would practice on some extra images before doing so.

4. ADD SOME NEAT EFFECTS. This is where most brushes work best, on DeviantArt get some cool looking brushes (I recommend the bash set brushes and splatter brushes, but it's your choice ;) .) And some C4Ds (Found on PlanetRenders.) to help add more flow to the sig, just make sure the C4D cooperates with the focal point.

5. NEVER EVER SAVE IN ANYTHING OTHER THEN .png ! If you save your image as .png it will come out nice and fresh, but if you save it as .jpg it will look like crap when you save it, so be sure to use .png !

6. NEVER EVER USE THE FILLING TOOL FOR YOUR BACKGROUND! It would look like something that came out of MS paint (Worst Image program ever, and I'm serious.)

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but don't question me how to really make signatures, just look at some beginner tuts, especially on YouTube so you know where a certain feature is.

im pretty sure you can get some better tips off the gimp site itself, no offense
But those tips are just for editing images, this is for making sigs.

Or, you if you wanna continue working on it later, you can save it as .xcf : D

Yeah, that's definitely true.

You should really always save a .xcf first, because if you make a mistake you could go back and fix it.

Do you see a difference? All I see is about 50KB of difference.
