Hi! I'm not the most up-to-date with anime, but I do have a couple I love VERY dearly!

1. Digimon
If you're a fan of Pokemon at all, Digimon is currently releasing a reboot 2020 of the original first season. There's lots of other good seasons as well, such as Digimon Tamers. It might just be nostalgia talking, but I personally really loved the animes, the characters, and the Digital monsters with all of my heart. For an anime that's rather old and intended for kids (and is kinda cheesy, sorry) it's honestly quite enjoyable to me.
Lots of games have been released for Digimon as well (including one for the Switch with a more mature/immersive storyline and a brand new one coming out for the Switch as well,) and if you're into grindy/collector type RPG games with elaborate/unique evolutionary lines then you might also like Digimon!

2. Zatch Bell
Also an older anime, but this time with demon children competing to become the next Demon King! It was released in early 2000s so it's kind of cringy at some points, but it's a sweet story and the little demon children to me are quite lovable.

3. Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)
Super popular, recently released! If you're a manga reader, get ready to sob. The anime has amazing animation, extremely well done in immersing an audience with high-action fight scenes, and the characters come to life from the manga are insanely charming/lovable. General story is a shounen involving the protagonist who ventures out to find a cure for his only-surviving sister who was turned into a demon after his family was murdered.

4. Pandora Hearts
Another older anime (2012) that is incredibly whimsical, a bit dark, and Alice in Wonderland themed. The illustration for the manga is beautiful and the story is tragically lovely. It's been a long time obsession for about 8ish years now.

5. Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai)
My profile picture is one of the characters! Very light hearted anime that develops a deeper overall plot. High action scenes, lovable characters, a huge world set in Britain way back in the day. Has Demons, Fairies, Goddesses, Giants, etc and takes a nice spin on folklore/fantasy themes to give them an interesting anime twist. It has a few tropes that are a bit annoying and by GOD the manga is long as heck, but it's a lovely romance story that I enjoyed reading. It's a Netflix only watch! Don't watch the third season though, the license got a new studio and the animation is god awful.

6. Beastars
NOW HEAR ME OUT, IT'S WAY MORE THAN JUST FURRY BAIT. An incredibly deep story that parallels our modern society. The plotline isn't 100% linear, but you just have a great time reading/learning about the world because it's so detailed, fleshed out, and the characters are so lifelike. The anime's 1st season just released, and some new/interesting aspects of it are: 3D models (THAT ARE ACTUALLY GOOD, WOW) acted-out voice acting (the voice actors acted out every scene to get a more authentic feel for how words would be spoken and the breath-pauses in between of speech. It's a subtle but AMAZING difference compared to other animes) and unique speech patterns for every character that give them a new layer of life and personality.
I do warn that it DOES get dark/graphic and a bit tragic, especially if you're reading the manga, but as a whole this anime really hits so many different genres: Romance, drama, slice of life, comedy, shounen, dark, etc.

Evangelion
Monster
Beck
Samurai Champloo
Imouto Umaru-chan
Tentai Senshi Sunred
Rec
Crayon Shin-chan

I wanted to second Kakegurui because it's the last anime I watched and I just had to rewatch it immediately afterwards. It's just so smart and entertaining to watch. It can be a little bit ridiculous (and maybe uncomfortable to some) sometimes, but to me the series has a similiar vibe like Danganronpa. Intelligence mixed with craziness. It might not be the best out there for this niche, but it was very entertaining to me.

(I also tried No Game No Life and I really disliked it, but I can also see people disliking Kakegurui for similiar reasons.)

some of these have been recommended already but i still feel the need to mention them myself cuz theyre SO DARN GOOD!!!!

puella magi madoka magica - tied with popee the performer for my favorite anime EVER. the art is SO COOL and i love it's weird take on magical girls and how they work!!! the characters are really lovable despite not being the Strongest and no matter how many times i rewatch the last few eps they still make me emotional ;__;

popee the performer - definitely not for everyone but i found it really funny and charming!!! it's a series of little comedy shorts around 5 mins each and they're mostly violent slapstick involving the 3 main characters. it's in really ugly early 2000s cgi but that just adds to the appeal for me... it's easy to get through in one day and all the eps are up on youtube! ^_^

nichijou - REALLY goofy/cute/strange comedy & slice of life. the characters are all extremely endearing and memorable, even if you don't remember their names you'll absolutely remember the funny moments they had. it's the BEST comedy i've seen next to popee the performer!!! there's not much i have to say about it but it's super good and funny even if you've seen it multiple times

devilman OVAs (not crybaby, referring to "the birth" and "the demon bird") - an interesting/cool/sad anti-war story about demons trying to take over the earth and even BETTER with the hilariously bad english dub (also available on youtube). don't want to say too much about the story to avoid spoiling it!!! i've shown it to everyone i know and IMO it's totally the best adaption of devilman. unfortunately they only cover half of the manga, so if you want to know how the story ends you'll have to read it or watch crybaby (which i do not recommend personally cuz i feel it gets the characters totally wrong and does some weeeeird stuff) :C something important to note is these (and the series in general) are PRETTY gore-y (mostly weird demon gore but some human gore too) so watch out instead if you're uncomfortable with that!!

fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood - SO good all the way through. handles it's serious themes pretty well i think. not much to say about this one but it's definitely well known for a reason : P my favorite character was al!

welcome to irabu's office - very weird silly and artsy show about a dr and his patients. i genuinely do not really know how to describe this one o_ O i was told about it by someone i knew who was staff at a con and accidentally took like two years to watch it OOPS. if you are looking for something really odd this is the one!!!

Demon Slayer
Beastars
BNA
Re: Zero
Tower of God
Id: Invaded
Somali and the Forest Spirit
Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun
Madoka Magica
Hunter X Hunter
Promised Neverland
Made in Abyss

Just trying to list some ones that are recent. Some of those ones are the best animes of all time tbh. Just...hunter x hunter / promised neverland. Do it. You won't regret it.

ohhh!!! gladly !!

you should give kekkai sensen a try !! it is hands down my favorite show and it is hardly ever talked about, from what ive seen! its. its so wacky and wild and it doesnt stop to let you breath for the 12 episode run it goes! it has a second season with 12 more eps too!! its got such a unique aesthetic and frankly its the funniest anime i've yet to see!!!
tumblr_ozzxaaBNSP1v1hotuo1_540.gifv

another one of my personal outstanding favorites is astro boy 2003 !! i watched it for the first time when i was 11 years old and i Still go back to it. all the charm of early 2000s anime with the cutest little robot in existence!!! astro is adorable and the show knows it! he gets into some everyday issues, but most eps delve into some more serous issues the series follows, namely the divide between man and machine. a fun 50 ep show that has me sobbing at the final episode Every Single Time. im Twenty.

some others on my top 10 list would have to be No.6 , banana fish , cardcaptor sakura, and bungou stray dogs! very fun in their own ways!!

like others have said before, i cannot recommend hunter x hunter enough. it is fantastic.

and as for movies, im all for softer ones really!
promare . and i cannot say this enough . PROMARE!
one piece movie 6 ( Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island ) - you dont have to know one piece to watch this one really and honestly you should!!! super SUPER unique style and highlights the best part of op without having to expend the 600 episodes im currently in.... its SO cool ive seen it like 5 times.
kimi no na wa ( your name ) - oh . you will cry. its Amazing
chirin no suzu (ringing bell)- super old but its charming in its tale. not many dark "cutesy" animal films like it
arashi no yoru ni - my personal favorite, nothing but feel good friendship!
jungle emperor leo (1997) - classic.. watch kimba the white lion if thats ur speed too!
tibet inu monogatari - a BEAUTIFUL movie, but the story isnt the strongest! animation is its biggest highlight.

Some happy/feel good animes that I haven't seen mentioned yet that I'd highly recommend are

-Kaguya Sama Love is War
-Cells at Work

Both of these shows are super fun and just nice to watch through whenever you need a cheering up! Cells at Work's second season will come 2021 and Kaguya Sama's second season is currently airing so there's plenty of time to catch up on everything!

As for recent anime I def recommend Demon Slayer and The Promised Neverland. Both are heavy hitters and absolutely amazing!

My favorites animes of all time include Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and Stein's Gate so feel free to check those out if you haven't already!

The one anime I suggest everyone to watch is death parade!!! I love it, its about the afterlife and events that happen during it, how to determine whether someone goes to 'heaven' or 'hell'. I think that the reason its so good is not only the art style but also the story , i've seen it over and over again and I still never fail to cry like a child when watching it.

Koe No Katachi is another good anime, but its a movie. Its about the struggles of a deaf girl coming into a new class, she struggles with bullying and other hardships, and the class has to learn sign language to communicate with her. When she's in high school she reunites with some of her past classmates, and it shows the story of how it goes and what she has to go through.

here are some of my req's

I want all anime and I suggest you do as well!!!

I love video games so I woould suggest starting out with something simple like the Street Fighter II V series, Fatal Fury, and Darkstalkers (Anime not the horrible cartoon).

My introduction to anime was Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, Venus Wars, Akira, Ghost In the Shell, and Wicked City; all in one day!

I recommend these anime
Death Note
Cardcaptor Sakura
Asobi Asobase
Nichijou
My Love Story
Food Wars
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Haikyuu

Haibane Renmei, done by the same people who did Serial Experiments Lain.
It has a dreamy whimsical sort of feel to it, then it starts to get dark. Music and scenery A+.

Revolutionary Girl Utena! (Though just to be safe and all, you may need to view a trigger list. The Show deals with a lot of content that can be hard on some viewers!)
Toilet-Bound Hanako Kun is also a very good anime.

It's been a long time since I've watched anime, but I remember really enjoying Assassination Classroom. So I'd definitely recommend that one! I also enjoyed Magi: Labyrinth of Magic, though I'd say the manga is better for that one. The anime is still enjoyable though.

Jujustu Kaisen
Demon Slayer
Way of the Househusband (hilarious)
Food Wars
These are ones I've recently started and they are so good!

If you’re up for a binge watching challenge and don’t care it’s considered “mainstream”, I would definitely suggest One Piece. Of course, totally understand if that’s not your type of tea. Don’t watch the fillers and there will be some episodes you kinda need to watch but are half filler (like repeated flashbacks).

Other suggestions: slice of life with a lot of action and surprises - Durarara. They have a fantastic VO cast (both dubbed and subbed; i watched subbed. for ex: hiroshi kamiya - levi and daisuke ono - Erwin). It is a bit confusing at first but I grew to love it and hope to one day get the full collection on dvd or blu ray.

Drifters - only one season is out but if you don’t mind some gore and blood, this one is worth watching. A bunch of historical figures are in this; it is like an alternate world they were sent to after dying in their time period. I hope this gets a second season.

Fate Zero: Best of the Fate series in my opinion at least story wise; the action is really good. I was drawn to the Fate series because of the characters based on historical characters. My opinion of the other series except the original and UBW is pretty low though (and don’t get me started on the gacha game lol).

GTO: If you’re looking for laughs and don’t mind seeing perversion, this one is really good. The manga is better but it sticks pretty well to it aside from the ending and what chapters it didn’t cover. The dub is really fantastic; Steve Blum has so much expressions and is so hilarious.

Ghost in the Shell SaC and the new netflix one: If you don’t mind fast paced stories (2nd gig is slower but just as good in my opinion or ones with heavy politics in it and pretty realistic aside from being set in the future with cyber technology), this might be a good one. It has some gore. One of my favorites and the dub is amazing (I watch mostly subbed but my first anime series I got really into I watched and still watch dubbed).

FMA Brotherhood (the original one is good minus ending and movie; it has fillers though and isn’t based as much on manga): there is some blood in this one as well. This is another one that made me think a lot. It has a lot of interesting references and themes like religion, science, matters of life and death. The only minor quirk i have is the typical depiction of chinese: girl with a cute panda & guy whose eyes are slanted (i love these characters; I honestly didn’t think it was intentionally done to condone such stereotypes until a friend brought the topic up so now it bothers me a little).

I'll suggest some of my favourites!

Michiko to Hatchin - anime set in South America with strong black female characters and a really unique premise for an anime imo
3-gatsu no Lion - possibly my favourite anime of all time, a story about a depressed shogi player as the people around him slowly help him out of depression, has lots of found family and wholesomeness whilst also dealing with heavier topics
Natsume Yuujinchou - relaxing supernatural slice of life anime with really endearing characters
Shoujo Shummatsu Ryokou - relaxing slice of life set in a post-apocalyptic world as two girls travel together
Nichijou - extremely well-animated comedy anime
Perfect Blue - psychological horror movie, very dark

You gotta watch SK8 The Infinity. It's such a wholesome series with great animation, fantastic music and lovable characters. I recommend the dub if you want a fun time.
