Super Mario Maker 2 got announced in the recent Nintendo Direct. It is currently planned for a June 2019 release.

What are your thoughts?

I played Super Mario Maker a lot on Wii U and loved it! But it did miss some crucial features such as.... slopes! Wow slopes are finally in Mario Maker alongside a very unexpected Super Mario 3D World game style and a bunch of new level backgrounds to choose from! Oh boy my dream of creating my own full length Mario game is so much closer now! The amount of variety possible with the new assets and enemies is amazing!

Also can I just say that the release window is perfect, I'll have lots of time during summer to make tons and tons of levels. I tend to spend a long time making them because I try to make them fun and polished like official levels heh.

I think it’s sounds amazing, it appears that they added many new features :) I really enjoyed the first, so I’ll definitely get this. I’m excited for sure and yes the slopes and cat Mario and clear pipes looks fun! I just wonder what else they will add with it. The cleaned up interface looks great too.

I've never played super mario maker because i never owned a Wii u. I never bought it for my 3ds because of the reviews lol. I'm super excited for this game. Super Mario maker was one of the games that I always wanted to play so can't wait to play smm2 on the switch!

I liked the concept of the first game a lot, and I did own it on the Wii U, but I rarely played it because I felt it had very limited resources. I grew up watching my brother build his own 2D Super Mario platformers on Game Maker, so I had really high expectations that were crushed. Plus I'm not a super creative person when it comes to this kind of thing.

Now I'm actually excited for this new game; it looks like they've updated the interface and added a lot of new stuff. I was surprised to see the Super Bell make an appearance! I was afraid it was gonna end up being one of those one-time only power-ups, like the Penguin Suit and the Super Acorn or whatever it's called.

Also the box art is adorable lol I love itttt <3

I didn't particularly like the original. I don't have the patience or interest to do my own levels, which is fine since I'm happy to play others levels...But the community made levels were mostly complete trash.

I'll see what happens with this though. I'm not holding my breath for the quality of what people make to be any better, nor that there will be any less crappy auto levels, but hopefully they will add some better filters so that I can at least miss all the trash and play levels that somebody actually put some effort into.

Hey you can look forward to playing my levels! It may be a little ambitious and there is a chance that I won't have the motivation to finish it completely but... I want to essentially make my own full Super Mario Bros. game through Super Mario Maker 2! My current plan is to make 8 worlds with 4 levels per world. So that's at least 32 good levels to start off with :p

For real though I'm sure that there will be others who make good levels but if the 100 Mario challenge returns then the bad level issue will remain. And I agree that a lot of them were a pain. I hope Nintendo creates some kind of filter to combat this. I mean if they really wanted to they could have some kind of AI filter but who knows if they care enough to put in that effort.

Speaking of the power-ups, I really hope that they add one extra power up to each of the theme/style exclusives. It would really help a ton with making the game more varied. For Super Mario Bros. they'd have to come up with something new or repurpose one from other games since it only had the Fire Flower.

Super Mario Bros 3 could use the Frog Suit, or maybe go crazy and use the Hammer Suit which is so obscure, honestly it deserves a spotlight. Then Super Mario World I'm not sure about... I don't remember there being many power-ups in Super Mario World but they could use the P-Balloon??

For New Super Mario Bros. U the obvious choice would be the Penguin Suit. Which I'd totally be happy with but I'd much rather see the Mini Mushroom. I know it's a weird one but I always liked how Mario controlled with it and I think it could make for some very interesting level designs. Also, it could serve as a less painful way to force Mario to be small instead of throwing someone into a spike pit.

Super Mario 3D World I'm not sure about... It had the Boomerang Suit which I'd like a lot but it loses a lot of its usefullness in a 2D environment as the boomerangs will probably disappear upon contact with ground tiles. I think the Mega Mushroom would be really cool to have back. Let us smash pipes in HD pls Nintendo! Otherwise just add the Tanooki Leaf again or somth even though it's already in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style because idk how to make the Double Cherry have any use in 2D.

It's great! I'll probably make a thread -if nobody makes it before me- for sharing levels once the game releases (assuming that level sharing is back which it should cause otherwise what's the point of this game lmao). So you could come share your levels and play ones made by users from here :)

I'm very much looking forward to this game, I really enjoyed the first and this seems very promising! I'm also wondering if there is a multiplayer aspect (Luigi, Toad and Toadette can all be seen on the extended boxart), or if this is just interchangeable characters to play. Either way, I'm excited to learn more, particularly about the Super Mario 2D World theme!

I think it's a good idea! I loved the first one, so seeing a version with way more features should be great. :)

I never played the original one, as I didn't own a Wii U and only know the game
through Let's Plays (especially those from DashieGames). Since I always liked the
idea behind Mario Maker, I guess I'm gonna get Mario Maker 2 now that I own a
Switch and being able to play it. Maybe I'm able to make a good level that I can
send Dashie so that he can play it, lol.

I am interested in this game, but there really needs to be some kind of chat feature for it to be fun for me. I lost interest in the first one after miiverse died. It is too hard to search for levels without it.

I like the feature for moving where the auto scroll goes. I feel like this could fix one of my levels that was failing. I had enemies you needed to jump on, but they weren't appearing sometimes because they were too far off screen.

This one also looks like there can be way more enemy spam. They may need a difficulty above super expert. lol

I am not particularly interested in the 2D Mario games or playing user-created levels.; my partner might like it and pick it up eventually however.

Yeah!! I saw the news, too.
The game just looks better and better! I love these create-your-game types of experiences because they're pretty much endless. You can always make more levels or you can download other people's creations - just so much to discover. The amount of courses is just huge.

Nintendo is just the best when it comes to games that surprise you!

Just saw the Direct for it, must say that it looks pretty good and they added lots of new
cool things. Especially the story mode sounds interesting. I'm still interested to get this
game. But I'm more interested in Dashie's Let's Plays for it.

so do all the game modes still use the same physics?

No. They play like the game they are based on. New Super Mario Bros. U style has wall jumps and the twirl neither of which are in Super Mario Bros. for example. Super Mario 3D World is also very different. The old three games are very similar but there are still nuanced differences when it comes to Mario's acceleration and momentum etc.

that's not physics though. those are features

Super Mario 3D World is also very different.

yeah, tbh I'm excluding that one with the question. since that much was obvious

actually why I was asking, since I very specifically remember this stuff all being the same on the first game (I'm extremely attuned to how the classic Mario games physics work individually). which as much as I still loved the game, that was certainly my biggest complaint about it

alongside being unable to spin jump on saws with the super mario world skin

Yeah I know that those features aren't physics but I thought I'd mention them anyway.
Idk about the spin jump on grinders though. They do have sound now but that's about all we know about them so far.

They've added a LOT of stuff in Mario Maker 2. If you guys want to see another video that shows a lot of those features, here's one. It's in Japanese and not subtitled, but basically what's going on is the guy (Arino, he's a comedian and also in the show Gamecenter CX) is making a prank-style level for another guy (Hamaguchi, his partner in the comedy duo they're part of). Part 2, when it's released, will show Hamaguchi actually playing the level. But in this first part you can watch Arino make the level. I was impressed by how much was added. Slopes are great, but some of the other features are far more interesting to me as far as what kinds of levels can be made now.
