Las Casas
I think that the saying Bartolome de las Casas “lost the battle, but won the war” describes how though the Spaniards lost a moral battle by slaughtering the natives, they conquered and gained much gold, “winning the war.”
If I were in the same time period of these events, I would have acted sympathetic to the natives. Though the time period is different, the morals of the Christian faith were relatively the same.
The encomienda system was a system established by the Spaniards that controlled and regulated the lives and labor of American natives.
The Black Legend was propaganda against the Spanish empire. The legend describes Spaniards as cruel, self righteous, and intolerant.
 
Motor Voter Act - passed in 1993, this act went into effect for the 1996 election. It requires states to permit people to register to vote at the same time they apply for their driver’s license
 
Look up who Jeremy Rifkin is. Write a short (1 paragraph) biography of the guy. How does his biography help to understand the purpose of "A Change of Heart about Animals." Connect his Bio to the article. Then, explain how Jeremy Rifkin may reply to one of the four letters to the editor on page 35.
