The "I learned something new today!" Thread

I just learned today that 4 of my 7 villagers have birthdays in June! How does that happen? the first 6 villagers were randomly generated by Tom Nook (also includes first camper Marshall). I haven’t looked to see when Gwen’s b’day is. She is the only one I’ve chosen just yesterday on a mystery island. Is that even a thing? I mean I know there are only 12 months and 400 something plus villagers, but what are the odds of having 4 out of your first 6 have a birthday in June?

i had no idea until today that claritian sells pillows, or either that there’s a pillow brand with the same name as the allergy medication.

Hmmm, thats interesting. It does say an Allergen free pillow so I guess that makes sense.

I just learned that there was an Animal Crossing game on N64 but released in Japan only. Huh, I thought the Gamecube game was the first.
There were actually like two of them on the N64 I think. Animal Forest and Animal Forest+

Nintendo of America translated one of the copies to English and then added more features. The Animal Crossing many of us have come to known. Nintendo of Japan not wanting to be one-upped re-translated the game back to Japanese and then added more features and tacked on Animal Forest E+ and made it Japan exclusive to be petty.

TIL that The Simpsons: Hit and Run was inspired by three specific games: Super Mario 64, Gran Turismo, and Grand Theft Auto. which makes sense, but it kinda blows my mind.

as if the game didn't already hold legendary status in the community, it's based on three games/series that mean a lot to me in one way or another (especially SM64) so hearing this has made me appreciate it even more!! I've never had the honor of playing Hit and Run but now I feel obligated to play it 😄

Today I learned about flicker vertigo, which is "an imbalance in brain-cell activity caused by exposure to low-frequency flickering (or flashing) of a relatively bright light." It is a disorientation-, vertigo-, and nausea-inducing effect of a strobe light flashing at 1 Hz to 20 Hz, approximately the frequency of human brain waves.”

My partner has always felt tense and nauseated when there are flashing lights on screens (or even when the sun is shining intermittently through a row of trees while driving, etc.) but doesn’t have epilepsy, so it’s good to put a name to it!

that caskets and coffins are two separate things. coffins have hinges while caskets have removable tops, caskets are used in a funeral service whereas coffins are for burial. ik morbid but it came up on an instagram meme and i have never thought about if there was a difference between the two, i always thought they were the same thing.

TIL that Namco is actually short for Nakamura Manufacturing Company. I would've never guessed, I figured it was just a made-up thing or perhaps it meant something in a different language (like Nintendo).

also learned this earlier, but the name Tetris is apparently a combination of "tetra" (meaning four, referring to how each tetromino has four blocks) and Pajitnov's favorite sport "tennis".

like I get the tetra part, but tennis? alright then 😂 I guess I can safely say that it was a wise decision bc the name Tetris is pretty catchy hehe

today i learned there are people that CAN’T picture things in their head?? if you told them to think of an apple, they wouldn’t be able to imagine an apple? i visualize things in my head almost constantly, so i can’t even imagine what life is like for them…

edit: it’s called aphantasia, and apparently my sister has it?
