The "I learned something new today!" Thread

i’m sure most of you know how to do this, but today i learned how to burn music onto a CD :]

I learnt that the blood in your veins isn’t actually blue. I always thought it was a blueish colour due to the lack of oxygen, but it’s actually dark red. Veins appear blue on pale skin since it’s only blue light that’s reflected back to your eyes. High school science lied to all of us lol

learned that when villagers wave to each other and then walk to one another, thats when they start a convo! i don't think i've made that link before until today heh

That this existed and it is a type of moth. I saw two of them outside. I guess they are called morning glory plume moth.
th

learned that you customise Halloween items by using the different pumpkin colours in ACNH. thought you just used customisation kits heh

that a flower called the bacopa cordata, native to south africa, is known as the “pikmin plant.” the flower was originally known as the sutera cordata (it also has other names) was bred into the bacopa cordata for the promotion of the first pikmin game in collaboration with syngenta seed brand which became commercially available to the public in 2002.

I learned a couple days ago that Appeltun (the Pokemon) does not in fact have cute little droopy ears...and just droopy eyes and I've never been more betrayed in my life.
I like them as eyes more than ears. Somehow makes it feel more dragon like to me idk.

I learned that one of the if not the first video games was Tennis For Two and it was invented in the 50’s I think and played on an oscilloscope

Yeah, that's been a feature of the site since we migrated to the newer Xenforo software, I believe.

two things:

first, this past week I finally learned how to pronounce the word "portmanteau". I've somehow never heard anyone actually say that word before, and it sounds so weird when spoken.

second, I learned that Wario is not, in fact, canonically related to Mario in any way, rather they were simply childhood friends turned rivals. that makes it even weirder that Wario dresses so similarly to Mario, like what's going on there lol. not to mention Waluigi isn't related to Wario either, the way that they dress lowkey comes across as some kinda obsession thing haha (though I guess in canon Waluigi has been shown to be a bit of a stalker, he's a creepy string bean sometimes).
doesn't bother me though, Wario and Waluigi are hilarious and iconic 😌💜

i've not played portal 1 but holy guaccers!! my excitement!!! aaa!!

Today I went on a tour of a traditional eastern medicine museum while in Vietnam. I learned there is a famous doctor who's great wish for the world was that everyone would be healthy so he could be lazy 😅

I learned that caterpillars, well, monarchs at least, don’t spin their chrysalises, they literally shed their top layer of skin and the chrysalis breaks out of it. This is probably common knowledge and I may have even known it before but it’s just wild to me.
