The "I learned something new today!" Thread

I learned that the creation of Buffalo wings is disputed between an Italian restaurant and an African-American owned restaurant. I don't know what happened to the former but unfortunately the latter restaurant closed in the 80s. There have been many different recounts about how Buffalo wings were made but they're all interesting.

that the “apple bottom jeans” from the song “low” by flo rida, are a brand of women’s jeans created by nelly + a bunch of other rappers in 2003 and not a specific cut of jeans.

For a few years (2002-2005) 7up sold an “upside down version” of their soda called dnL. It was released the day before I was born!

I feel like I had a re-realization of how much I love music. I love playing my instrument sm!!

I put a bunch of stuff on different local sites to get rid of stuff I didn't need, but to still make some money. It really isn't worth it dealing with all the flakes and people asking bunch of questions and or committing to a time but never showing.

But what I learned is that some of these sites have it set up where it notifies you when someone simply visits/clicks on your items with a notification/statement of 'is this available/I am interested in it. Such a stupid way to have it set up. It's a time waster for those selling and an inconvenience for those that are just browsing. Stupid people in charge like always.

I watched a video on how to make different vinegars out of dried fruit. You can't use them to preserve stuff, it's just for flavoring foods when you cook. I found it interesting. Idk if I would ever do it. I may try out of curiosity of taste. Different fruits make different vinegar tastes.

TIL that the human skull has a squiggly crack on top called a suture. i mean ig if it holds my head together great, but idk how I feel knowing I have a noodle chillin on my head haha

I read some stuff on the Canada Food Guide site for cooking class, and I learned that... I have more than the recommended caffeine intake for my daily morning coffee (at my age, at least).
For adolescents, it recommends 2.5 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight. After doing some quick math and conversion, I should be having about 130 mg of caffeine intake.
I'm not 100% sure what kind of coffee my parents make (the CFG lists a bunch of different types, like brewed and instant), but "roasted and ground, filter drip" is probably my best guess. If that's the case, then I'm getting an average of 179 mg of caffeine. ...Yeah, that's 49 mg more than what I should be having.
Should I stop drinking coffee as of right now? Probably. Or at least until I either gain a bit more weight or I become an adult so my recommended caffeine intake will go up to 400 mg, whichever happens first.

It's always cool to find different things like this to experiment with. I grew an abundance of cucumbers last year that I couldn't use before they would all go bad. So I wanted to see what I could make them out and freeze well. I ended up making a really good winter-y cucumber and avocado soup. It had the same consistency of potato soup and froze very well. I still have some in my freezer that is holding up well.

I doubt I will do that again or grow so many cucumbers, but it's always fun to try new things.

White mold on soil is a good sign that it's healthy soil (especially if you used manure or compost), and the mold is harmless to your plant.
What isn't safe is that it could be a sign of root rot in the near future because of too much moisture. Water less, have more sun and uv.
I also learned you can prevent the fuzzies by scraping the top of the soil now and then, to allow gas exchange. You could also sprinkle cinnamon if you have a bunch of white mold already that you want gone.

Today, I learned how to do something new at work! It's still a little confusing but it involves coupons/vouchers that you can use if you spend $5 (up to $15 worth) with EBT on produce items!

How it works; if you spend $10 on produce items with EBT, you get a $10 voucher to use for produce (just not on the same transaction). It's that way with $5 or $15 also ^^ However we have to keep a log of every single voucher/coupon and when it was used, when it was given out, etc. Very complicated to me, but I learned how to do this today all on my own! My boss explained it to me a week or two ago, but I never understood it until I did it myself. I'm not a manager or anything, just a measly lil cashier, so I was really proud of myself :3

TIL that Donkey Kong Jr. Math is the only NES game that is in the "Educational Series". for context, the NES had a bunch of release titles that were part of different series, like the "Sports Series" and the "Action Series". I guess there was supposed to be another Donkey Kong themed educational game on NES, but it didn't get far past the early stages of development and it was cancelled, leaving only DK Jr. Math.

If contamination occurs in your substrate, the mushrooms can still be edible if there is nothing funky on the mushrooms themselves and the mushrooms look normal.

I was kinda concerned about so many people talking about throwing their mycelium out if they found a spot of this or that in it. Some people bury it outside and then eat the fruiting if it happens later. And I was also thinking about nature and the 10,000 other things that are probably growing along side the mushroom (or crawling on it) that would be foraged by people.
But people staying toss right away was more about how they were trying to grow it in their house (spore concern) rather than the mushrooms actually being unsafe.
