Recently I had a discussion with someone about the most popular TV show from the past. They said it was friends, while I disagreed on saying it was The Office. I personally have only watched the office and I don't think another show could really compare. Which show do you think is better or your favorite.

don't @ me but i never found friends funny and i never understood the hype surrounding it, right now i think its resurgence is all nostalgia-based.

i've actually never seen the office, well only the uk one and i'm assuming you mean the american version, i keep meaning to but it seems like a huge task considering how many seasons there are so i default to friends, i don't exactly find friends the height of comedy but it's nostalgic and kinda comforting, i definitely don't hate it
I have watched both the UK and American versions of The Office. I tried to watch a few episodes of Friends but I just couldn't get into it. So I would have to say that The Office is definitely my favorite, although some seasons were better than others.
I love both, and everyone's least favorite episodes of The Office are actually amongst my all time favorites !
However, I've been watching Friends since I was a child and have probably seen the entire show WAAAAY more times than I can ever count. The reruns were always on when I was young and avoiding sleep.... The Office I've only watched through around three times, which is still a lot, but nowhere close to Friends.
I don't find either particularly funny though, I loved Friends for the same reason I love any sitcom. It's a story/drama surrounding a group of people and their venture throughout life. The Office was definitely hilarious in the first couple seasons, when it was more awkward/cringe based, but after that it gets very over-the-top and also focuses on relationships and the growth of the characters more. That's when it starts to stray from the original UK humor and goes to more of an American style. So, ends up being likable for the same reason most sitcoms are.

Friends does absolutely nothing for me. I don’t care for any of the characters, they all annoy me and it’s not in a funny way. Seinfeld does a great job of making a group of annoying, narcissistic friends hilarious.
The office is fun and wacky, kinda lost me in the last few seasons but still a gazillion times funnier than friends.

I haven't seen The Office but for some reason I actually find Friends really funny, I so rarely laugh at TV/comedy but I laugh all the time when I'm watching Friends even though I do not find the characters relatable at all. And I never watched a single episode until I was 19 so it's not even nostalgia!
At the time Friends first aired, NBC had a killer Thursday night line up - it really was must see tv. So I think it’s a generation gap thing... Remember that cable was still not all that common, I mean, it cost a lot and it took a lot to get it hooked up and we were all used to just the three main channels and the two fuzzy ones... Anyway for me personally, I’ve never watched The Office and couldn’t tell you a thing about it so can’t compare the two but I know how massive Friends is and was and just want to convey my thoughts as someone that experienced it first hand so you could understand why it became so popular.
I would say The Office, although I only know this show thanks to memes and small clips I watched

Friends was one of the first american TV shows I watched that wasn't a cartoon (along with CSI and the X-files lol). The only reason why it has some sentimental value to me is because my dad, who lived separately from our family at the time, would come back after a year and just bring tons of fake DVDs of bootleg friends. I thought it was funny back then but after watching a few clips of it again, I really don't know how I sat through all those episodes lol. I never binged re-watched the show like some of my other friends because I couldn't get into it. I thought the Office was funny but I never finished the series.
i don't really think you can compare a traditional sitcom to a mockumentary comedy. they have nothing in common. i thought about being cool and contrary by saying they're both terrible and that i'll never watch it, but somebody took my idea. :c so now I have to be genuine.

I have yet to see The Office but I can always appreciate the fact that I can whip any episode of Friends up and laugh. It's nice because it's a show that anyone can watch, and you don't need to watch previous episodes to understand what's going or. Always cheers me up.

I'm gonna give office the vote because it had better memes that came from it, but I don't really like watching TV sitcoms with a few exceptions like Seinfeld, maybe.

I really like them both. I think both have funny moments, but I have a nostalgic side to friends. I could watch any episode of that show at any point. I've watch both shows multiple times all the way through. But I definitely think friends is the more popular of the two. It's still popular for a reason.
