The Official Feedback Thread

I have a question about this point. This only applies to TBT members, correct? I am allowed to post about a past friendship if the past friend is not on TBT, but somebody I know in person or via another social media platform like Snapchat? I’m just trying to make sure I understand correctly.
Correct! However, we'd still encourage you to be mindful of the details you share, regardless of whether they're a TBT member or not. Again, the intent and focus are on your experiences and feelings.

It seems like the new ad system is already starting to show scam-type ads at the top of the page. Is there any chance of moving the new ad bar? It seems like something that could greatly discourage new users or potentially lead to scams/malware.

Hi, everyone!

Based on the feedback and some of the reports we've received recently, we want to address the What's Bothering You thread sooner, too.

This thread was initially created as a space for members to vent and share their feelings. However, we recognize that the nature of this space can also lead to misunderstandings, discomfort, hurt feelings, and tension.

To help the thread remain a safe and supportive outlet, we've discussed and are introducing additional guidelines alongside our existing ones when posting in it:
  • Focus on your own experiences and feelings. Please avoid sharing personal details or issues about others to respect their privacy
  • Do not make indirect statements about others. Making vague statements about a past or present relationship/friendship who are members of TBT can be harmful. Even when you don't include any identifying factors, the other person can figure out they're the target of your post, and we often can't verify or take action because we don't have any knowledge of the situation
    • This also applies to posting about another person's situation, whether positive (e.g., concern, worry) or negative, as their situation is not yours to share
  • Be mindful of sensitive content. Some topics may be triggering to others (e.g., mental health struggles, traumatic experiences, medical conditions and procedures, politics, or loss). We encourage using spoiler tags for such content to be considerate of everyone using the space.
As always, please continue to report rule-breaking posts for staff review.

Additionally, we've decided to close the Pet Peeves thread. As it serves a similar use case to the What's Bothering You thread, we believe it's best to keep such posts where additional guidelines are in place.

Thank you for sharing your feedback! ☺️

An edit was made to the wording in the second point for clarity.

Could I request having the spoiler tag code be posted in the original post so it can be copy and pasted for phone users? I am often on my phone and the bar to select that kind of stuff has been grayed out for a long time now when using my phone for some reason, so for the most part I stopped using spoiler tags.

You could just write out the tag, which is just the word inside brackets. That’s usually what I do because it’s faster than highlighting the intended text and clicking the button, at least for me!

Secondly, I believe the issue with your bar is that you have something toggled off. Click the three dots I have circled, and make sure the bracket I’m pointing to isn’t faded.

Absolutely! Added for ease of access. :)

Yeah.. it's all grayed out and has been for a while on my phone. This is what I see:

And it isn't the preview because when that is selected the keyboard goes away along with the blue arrow thing.

Absolutely! Added for ease of access. :)
Thanks!!

I just wanted to share my personal opinion on the matter and say that I am personally happy the "Pet Peeves" thread is locked because with all due respect I feel that some users post things that really should go inside of the "What's Bothering You?" thread instead such as [random example] "I do not like it when my cat climbs on my bed" instead of actual pet peeves such as [random example] "My pet peeve is when people interrupt me when I'm in the middle of speaking"
It truly is not my intention to be rude or judgemental of what other users choose to post on the forums but I honestly feel like some people do not use the "Pet Peeves" thread correctly and it has become cluttered in my personal opinion.

after re-reading the rules, I can confirm that, no matter how old a thread is, it is okay to bump as long as the comment contributes to the discussion in a meaningful way. there is no rule against bumping old threads. I suppose the only time an old thread shouldn't be bumped is if there is a more recent thread on the same topic, or if the topic is outdated or too sensitive.

but I could've sworn that, at some point, there was a rule or advisory against bumping old threads. is that true, staff? or are Apple and I somehow misremembering?

As far as I know there has never been a rule against bumping old threads, at least not in the time I've been moderating (although I can't speak for all of the ~15 years before that).

To give some examples: if someone wants to bump their old journal/gallery or revive a thread for a game that was mentioned to be in development a few years ago but just came out, that's fine!

And on the other hand, directly replying to a comment from years ago or providing your new opinion in a thread that already has hundreds of opinions is not that useful. Also, some topics (like you mentioned: ones that are obsolete or sensitive subjects) are simply better off buried even though they're technically not locked, and we would also discourage people from browsing the pages of old threads intentionally looking for something to bump/reply to. We'd likely still consider removing the bumping posts in such cases (without taking formal action, if it isn't a frequent issue).

Basically, we don't think it's a huge issue if we see an older topic getting bumped every now and then. As long as you don't make a habit of it then the more recent content will still be near the top of the board, meaning people likely won't be annoyed by the bump, so it's all good. :)

This is in the same vein as unpinning the What Do You Look Like? thread. I’ve noticed that the How Old Are You? thread has been at the top of the pinned list in Brewster’s Cafe for a while, and it kind of strikes me as odd to have a thread like that highlighted so much. Maybe I’m overthinking, but is this a thread the staff would consider doing the same thing as WDYLL for?

I'm not really sure, personally I like the thread as it's an interesting statistics thread to see the demographics of TBT and see how different or the same our userbase is and I view it in the same vein as the "How many male/female users are a part of this community?" thread and I find it harmless enough although I guess I could see bad actors using it for harmful purposes if that's what others are concerned about but if other people want it unpinned I guess at the end of the day it doesn't really matter since similar statistics threads such as the "What race are you?" "What's your sexual orientation?" and "What's your religion?" threads were never pinned to begin with so...

I know this is a minor event and it probably doesn't warrant that announcement banner that shows up on the top of the forums saying that an event is happening or the voting booth is open.

But I would like it to show up when a core component of the event was changed such as a temp collectible has been made permanent. I didn't even notice the description changed and sold mine when I would have kept it otherwise.

With reacts being so integral to events lately, I would love it if we could change our default react in settings to one of the other options 🙏 The setting can be reset to "Like" any time an option is removed. I use tbt primarily on mobile, and the tap and hold to access other reactions adds a ton of time that could be saved by being able to change the default

personally I remember when the staff would make a new thread each year, and they only stopped doing that when TBT was updated and poll options could be changed. but at this point the thread has been up for years, and I doubt the statistics are really correct anymore. some people change their age bracket, others don't. maybe making another new thread would be a good idea.

but I agree that, while it does provide some interesting insights, it's not really necessary to have it pinned, or even visible to non-members if that's the case.

It would make more sense if a number was only toggled if you were actually rated.
yes, maybe starting out the rating could simply say "--%". then again, if the percentage still has the (0) to the right, then that implies that there are no ratings yet, hence why it would say 0%. but I can definitely see where there may be confusion.

Yeah I agree Bug, I've noticed several users haven't updated their age in several years and are now in a different age bracket(or possibly more) and I've wondered about whether or not we could make a new thread to gather accurate statistics(also I'd like it better if the options in the poll were 13-15, 16-17, 18-21, 22-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-45, 46-50+ instead of 13-15, 16-18, 19-21, 22-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-50, 51+ but that's just me) however the current thread has a massive 1,353 voters so making a new thread almost feels futile as we would lose so many voters.

I like the idea of the "How old are you?" poll because it's interesting though the current one we have isn't as accurate as I wish it was so I think it's fine if it gets unpinned if that's what other users would like.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I'll bring it up for discussion.

It's definitely a balance between how often and for what severity we put up banners, not just for whether we are annoying people, but also it's just yet another little task that has to be done during an event. The new Event Highlights feature we added last year is supposed to help with this to some degree with how we're able to bring attention to the important posts in a thread, and the weed change was highlighted through that. I get what you're saying though, that change might have warranted a banner in hindsight.

Noted!

So what’s next for official responses? I’m always eager for new updates.

Going into the repeat winners issue, I know that you can’t always win a contest, but such advice is hard to teach someone who rarely, if ever, wins. Though I also wanted to point out that in several recent events (going back to 2020), the staff were overly generous in giving out TBT Fair awards. Case in point, the Colorful Confetti event had 18 staff favorites, 9 per round. Looking back at the 2016 TBT Fair and 2017 TBT Fair, the Bucket of Paint only had five staff favorite awards per event. Some of the other events also went overboard on staff favorites (and raffle winners as well). I’m not sure if it was better to hand out more awards, or fewer awards.
