You set the time to 5:58, log on, quit, make new character. Or at least I hope thats what you're supposed to do being I'm doing that.

Yes, to advance to the next day that you want to scout. Start the game as Mayor and have Isabelle change the clock to the date you want and set the time to 5:58 AM. Have her load your town. Save and quit immediately. Then wait two minutes and start scouting as a new character. So long as you're entering the town after six in the morning, it's set for a new day.
